It’s unfortunate that someone not flying your plane tells you what to do. Even worse, suggesting a straight in landing when entering the downwind is the preferred method. I do make straight in landings, but only when I’m the only one around and even then very carefully. There’s a reason aviation uses standardized practices - SAFETY!

Valerie, another enjoyable and informative video, especially for us pilots -- nicely done! Your various camera angles and the excellent footage along with the great editing are all top notch! The confusion during your approach (stirred up by the rude pilot in the Islander) no doubt raised your stress level in the cockpit that day but you handled it like a pro and the silver lining is that it gave this video more of a riveting story line! I hope that the flight ended well (and hopefully peaceably!) and that everyone in your group enjoyed the visit -- guess I'll find out in Part 3! As I write this, Sun 'n Fun is just over a week away -- looking forward to saying hi to you and Eric! Best, Andy

I hope you had a diplomatic word with them afterwards? I often joined over the field, well above circuit alt, and corkscrewed down into the pattern. Safe and fun! But I normally cleared my intentions with Approach.

Our encounter will be in part 3 😉 Spiraling down is fun too. Flying over the field above pattern altitude is a safe way to enter traffic pattern but locals have there ways of doing things.

That's how we do it at Marsh , straight in RWY 9 all day long 😂, I've been there around 150 times in the last 12 years, and I never had to enter the pattern at 1500. A few times, I did a 360 to give people in front of me a little more room, but that's about it. Marsh needs a tower, by the way. It's way too busy to be uncontrolled airport.

MY NICKEL ON THE GRASS Is there an approach plate for this Airport or was there any special notice for this fly-in? Otherwise beautifully captured land and water video Captain Val. 🌏🇭🇲
@SkylineBaronPilot Жыл бұрын
No approach plate that I know of. As a group of ~30 + airplanes, we all briefed prior our departure to fly over the field to assess the area and join pattern altitude. Safety in mind.

Way I see it, there was no confusion until some local pilot decided to become his own ATC and bark unsafe commands to other pilots. I would've simply ignored him and gone about my business. Kudos to Val for not succumbing to the external pressure from some idiot who could care less if you had a midair as long as it didn't block final.

Unbelievable someone at an uncontrolled trying to tell everyone how to fly. Pattern procedures exist for a reason… safety. Everyone makes their calls in predictable spots and are able to adjust their spacing to keep a safe flow in and out of the field. Couldn’t believe what I was hearing… good job sticking to your guns.

That’s not a professional situation you’re in. I would suggest that the airport authority get control of their situation. Or the planners get together and do a thorough briefing. When you mix local people doing everyday stuff. They are outside the brief. Thanks for posting this one.

Thank you for your input. That’s how I see it too. Locals and charters are getting use to do it their way. We were a large group coming in and I could have been more upfront to let them know…. I’ve learned a good lesson there.

You don’t have a set plan for uncontrolled fields that you don’t deviate from, you have a hierarchy of procedures. If the straight in is open, and there isn’t conflicting traffic in the pattern, fly straight in and be done. The upwind entry is my LAST choice. If someone is departing you can lose separation quickly. 45 entry into the downwind or teardrop from +500 pattern altitude. He person on the radio was tired of listening to people eff up standard entries. Your briefing doesn’t mean jack at an uncontrolled field.
@SkylineBaronPilot Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input. I see your point and you’re correct, it is an uncontrolled airfield…
