Flying is all about routine but what happens when that routine is broken and for no apparent reason you start questioning if you should be doing this, maybe the weather is really not as good as you thought or the aircraft engine just doesn't sound right, at what point do you say I'm not doing this and call it off?
Take off is optional and dealing with problems on the ground is much more preferable to taking them into the air.
My name is Terry Kent and I am a General Aviation PPL private pilot operating out of North Weald EGSX about 12 miles to the north east of London in the UK. Short Field is my channel focused on the lighter side of General Aviation including flight and airfield reviews, equipment unboxing and review plus all things private pilot related. I use various cameras to record my videos including GoPro and Insta 360 and stills and edit them in Adobe Premiere Pro, I am an animator as well and often use animations to describe situations more clearly I use Blender and Adobe After Effects for these. I always attempt to post my videos in the highest possible quality, normally 4k.
I fly a 2011 Pipersport two seat single engine aircraft that is also known as the PS28 or SportCruiser in the USA (America) it is known under the FAA as an LSA or Light Sport Aircraft and can be flown on a very basic license. In the UK it is a Part 21 airplane which requires a full licence but it's generally cheap to run, affordable maintenance and great value for money. It cruises at 100 to 105 knots and has superb short take off and landing or STOL capabilities. I visit farm strips, back country and short airfields, some of them dangerous and I try not to crash :-), as well as international airports and try to learn something new every time I fly.
#aircraft #generalaviation #pilotlife
I fly VFR and IFR as well as visual and instrument approaches.
My videos may give helpful information to pilots but please remember these are just for entertainment, I am not an instructor nor should anything shown in my videos be used for real world aviation, also the airfields I visit may have totally changed or even closed since the making of the video so always consult the latest information for your country.
If you enjoyed this video, please give it a ‘thumbs up’ and leave me a comment in the box below, I love to read them and I also like to hear what you like or dislike about my video. Please share it with anyone you think would be interested and I'd so love it if you ticked SUBSCRIBE and DING THE NOTIFICATION BELL to be informed by KZbin when I upload my next video. Thank you so much.
If you are interested, my video content is available to purchase as stock footage, please contact me via my email address in the ABOUT section of my channel for more information.
If you like my content you could buy me a coffee but no worries if you don't want too, I'm just chuffed that you are even interested in my videos, and if you ever see me at any airfields please come over and say 'Hi' and I'll probably buy you a coffee.

I totally get it. I was supposed to go flying today, my father had driven 2,5 hours to meet me at my airport, I had an appointment at another airport. There was some pressure to take-off, but it's was very windy, typical spring winds, very gusty. I had to call it off, didn't feel ok. It sucks, but doesn't suck as much as being scared once in the air. One day I'll be better in crosswinds and gusty landings, but today was not the time to prove it to myself!

I'm not a pilot but I love aviation and your videos are easy to follow. They are produced in a format that a non-pilot can understand and I appreciate the work that goes into them. I'm on the flight path to Biggin Hill and it's a pity they don't support GA craft so much now as it would be great to see more pilots like you land there. Have to make do with Titsey Airstrip or Crockham Hill Airfield but there's nothing to do when you get there!! But there's always Headcorn 😊

Great vid once again Terry! Punctures are such a pain, and it's amazing how immobile a plane is with a flat tyre! Glad you noticed it - and as you say, taking off is always optional - in fact the only thing that isn't optional eventually is landing, everything else is a choice 🤣

Just one observation to your pre-flight checks. I was told to always start my walkaround with fuel. The reason is that you’re trying to find contaminants in the fuel sample, and you’re more likely to find it before you knock on the aircraft here and there - potentially resulting with dissolving whatever extras you might have in your tanks. I’m no expert, but the reasoning makes sense to me. As always - great video. Thanks for posting it.

G’day from Sydney, Oz. Thanks Terry, great video and salient message too. 40 years flying and I got caught recently with a ‘somethings not quite right’ feeling. Mid taxi I pulled onto the grass and had a look. 😳Then spotted the rudder lock on the tail of the C150. Still don’t know how I missed it on the preflight, except that the red ribbon was missing. Would have been quite entertaining in the air with the rudder locked 😱

I kept telling myself (and my instructor) it was nerves. When we were taxiing back for me to go alone for the first time, another student slid off the runway next to us when we were taxiing back. I knew it wasn't my aircraft and that we were safe, but it taught me a lesson. Trust the gut. I didn't fly my first solo that day. 4 days later tho, I did.

In my schooling in aviation safety, I've found that a pilot's intuition is really accurate most of the time. generally, whenever something doesn't feel right it is the result of something that is barely perceptible, which unless you had a reference to compare to, would be impossible to detect. trust your gut and make the no-go decision at any point.

Hi Terry, awesome video, perfectly structured and well shot. I have my first real RTO in 5 years of flying at Biggin Hill when ferrying a C152. Normally I fly the PA28 so it was unusual to me, but since I did my PPL in a 152 I was happy to get back in. Luckily biggin hill has a huge runway, and on take off, it was windy, but whilst climbing at 70kts, I got to 100ft and the aircraft refused to climb but felt normal. I gave it about 5 seconds to see if it would pick up, but no luck. Dumped the flaps and landed back with probably around 100m to spare. I normally fly at shoreham, so I’m glad I had a long runway to aid me. Glad I made the decision. Subscriber gained Terry!

I had something similar happen. All is good. Taxied. We had a bit of line up at the hold short and that gave enough time for the air to leak out. By the time I got my clearance aircraft didn’t want to move. Including applying full power. We shut it down and called for a pit crew. No delay and we would have been airborne with a flat main tire tire

Hi Terry, You did good👍💜✌️ You do all the things that my dad used to do preflight (pre airfield arrival) before the advent of tech, I was taught the same and the excitement builds the closer one gets the the airfield too😊. And much is often learnt as one drives home after the flight or lesson too. I first found the Rotax 900 series a bit alarming in terms of max rpm etc, but my dad had flown with early versions prior, I then thought of them like a Japanese motorcycle engine. My car engine is VVT and doesn't get going until 4000rpm and is docile under that rpm. Also with its tight tolerances took 10,000 miles to run-in. Very similar to Rotax products in many ways. I've seen many a pilot go through ritual check lists - only to be saying the words and not doing the checks. Also I'm reminded of Aviate, Navigate, Communicate (and DONT check list yourself into the ground at 500'). I recently watched a "know-it-all" pilot in an ex RAF type (you know the kind of pilot, they think they're in a Spitfire or Hunter and like to mess about doing half breaks on finals when other traffic is behind them in the pattern/circuit🙄🙄😠) recently, do some tyre kicks after a cup of tea and piece of cake (see what I did there?😄😳🙄). Very myopic imho - one never knows when leaving an aircraft if some wan....."wally" has knocked it or its got damage upon landing etc - Eg a FOD puncture. The aircraft next to him, a Fuji (I hadn't seen one of those for years - last time was at Thruxton circa 1980), it's pilot, after his tea and chips? Full pre flight including tyres and brakes etc. Then taxying for power and further control surface checks. Better to know early of an issue, even on the ground, as it avoids inconvenience embarrassment, hassle. Okay life isn't perfect but heading stuff off at the pass helps🤔😉 Also we ALL make mistakes. I love how spats look, but on grass farm strips they can be a chore AND with them on its hard to see any issues with brakes or the tyres etc. But FOD is bad luck - good luck though you spotted it before take off💜👍✌️😊 As an aside, I sometimes listen to your videos through my QC35ii Bose Headphones - the RT etc then sounds like I'm in the aircraft with you💜👍😊✌️😄 Another great, thought provoking video💜✌️👍👍😊😊😊

@musoseven8218 Жыл бұрын
@@ShortField Thanks - I waffle on I know. I was puzzled by the end clip, didn't know if it happened prior,🤔 Rotax engines in Microlights/Light Sports are awesome. No waiting for "65 staying alive" etc. Throttle open, 1,2,34,5 Max rpm, Ts & Ps are good rotate, 200' flaps away, it's that quick, then 1000fpm - 1700fpm depending on the aircraft, engine bhp and load. But Rotax engines have their issues from time to time too😊🤔

The 360 footage is so versatile and gives loads of options when editing and having the 3 GoPro's (a 10 an 8 and a 5 Session) means I can select from 3 angles in the cockpit. I usually just run them all at 4k for the complete flight and never delete the footage once I've downloaded it which makes for a real pain in storing it all :-)

So you do not check fuel contents manually ? You rely on a fuel gauge ? I was always taught that fuel gauges are not to be trusted (they can get stuck) and you should always dip the tank.... thoughts ?
@ShortField
@ShortField Жыл бұрын
I am so bad I should point out that lots of checks and stuff are cut out from these videos otherwise they get a bit boring. I don't dip the tanks on this aircraft but I do physically open up the fillers and look at the levels to see if they match the gauges. A valid point and thanks for the great comment.

@@ShortField - I had a one of the quater-turn fastners on my cowl pop up on take off. I told the tower I needed to come back and land (and not depart the area with flight-following like I previously told them) -- and why. It was sort of funny because the controller was new and thought it was an emergency... and I responded all calm like, "nah. it's just single fastender. There's 6 more plus 4 clips holding my cowl on. I'll be find. Just need to secure it." But feeling that whole "ugh. gotta land. somethings' amiss" -- such a drag. But -- gotta do it. :D

@@ShortField - Well, this was 1 of 7 quarters that hold the cowl on PLUS 4 clamps (2 each side). I wasn't worried about it other than it coming loose and flying into my windshield for whatever damage that would cause. "Know your plane" is the key, right? but yea -- I didn't mess with it. Immediately came back and landed to fix it.

Hey Glenn, I know but I have to stay legal :-) That was a front coming in and I thought I may have been able to get out ahead of it, good job I turned back the field was socked in for 24 hours immediately after this. I don't think the camera shows it but it was down to the deck to the north (left) pretty much a mile off the end of the runway. Nothing flew after this.
