I Think you should also make a video about how to mark well the slap in the conga and the open one in the conga so that I can improve that part that I want to learn those two parts in the conga that are very important in this instrument

Wow I loved the free play at the en after seeing all the variations. The combining of the phrases is so musical with all this tension and release of the rhythm. What do you suggest in terms of keeping the variations in mind in a non-robotic waw? I'm thinking about it similarly to how I learned to dance.

Thank you for your kind words! I would say that you should first spend the time to master them “robotically” lol, that’s is to say practice each shape/pattern until it becomes second nature. Then start to combine them- play them over the course of 16 bars, interchanging them however you’d like. Lastly, take the time to listen to some recordings in the modern salsa genre to start to develop an understanding of how these are used in a musical context. Pay attention to how they are used within a phrase, as well how they are used in respect to the other instruments, the arrangement, and of course the lead vocal 🙌🏼

3 or 4 drums tumbao variations?
@CongaChops
@CongaChops 4 жыл бұрын
We have plenty of three drum variations on the website if you are interested: www.congachops.com - Meanwhile for this KZbin Series, we have to learn to walk before we can run : ) So in a few months when we cover a good amount the two drum essentials, I'll be sharing some fun variations, fills, and solo phrases for 3+ drums 🙌🏼

@@CongaChops It was easier for me to learn on 2 drums before 1. Then on 4 before 3. That's because I was always watching Ray Barreto and Giovani Hidalgo playing on many drums. Though I still have a long way to go. Thanks

Interesting. Generally speaking if one can play one drum very well, have a great sound, feel and taste, it makes it much easier to learn to play as many drums as you want, as you can apply many of the same concepts and techniques. However if we start with two, three or four drums and never take the time to focus on the fundamentals that come from playing on only one drum, there will be some huge gaps in one’s playing and the learning curve would be made unnecessarily steep. Imagine trying to write a book without first learning the alphabet. Even if someone start's out playing on 5+ drums for some strange reason, they will still have to hone their fundamentals on one single drum. I can assure you that both Ray Baretto and Giovanni mastered playing one single drum before they were able to master playing several at once. If you work mastering all of these two drum variations, it will be very easy for you to then adapt them to 3+ drums 🙌🏼

@@CongaChops I understand 100%, I was never planning on playing drums, it just happened. But when I bought my LP's (4) I began learning the basics on 1 but because I was not planning on doing this I tried emulating what they were doing. That's why I say I learned on 2 drums before than learning on one. Not trying to create a controversy out of this, it just happened that way... then I started learning on the 1 drum. 1'st I only knew the basic tumbao pattern on the main drum, but every other variations I learned was on 2 or 3 drums. But when I started watching different congueros I saw the many variations on 1 single drum. (I only do this as a hobby). I'm sure that if I went to a school or someone was teaching me they would've taught me the basic 1'st. Any way great stuff.

No controversy here, everyone has their own experience and learning style, so thank you for sharing yours! It does sound like you did start playing on one drum, even if for a short time : ) So maybe look at it this way: whatever you've already learned on 2,3,4 drums etc, you CAN play on one drum, I promise! So since you already have that rhythmic knowledge on 2 and 3 drums, go ahead and try applying it to one drum to see how it sounds 🙌🏼 The opposite is also true, try taking any of the one or two drum variations, and spreading them across 3+ drums, just take the same figure, and instead of playing any one of the open tones on your main two drums, move them over (one at a time) to your 3rd or 4th drum to see how it sounds. Would love to hear what you come up with!
