The partitioning of India and creation of Pakistan involved many more people being moved and was done to solve a very similar problem of ethnic and religious incompatibility. Not to say that this is feasible or a good idea per se but that it is not unprecedented , just about every border in the world recognizes an ethnic or cultural divide and the end of a war . Why resolution by the same means now is unthinkable is hard to fathom.
