I can't remember the last time I was so proud of an elected official. Thank you Congressman Cohen.

Mr. Cohen, Thank you for honoring Alex Chilton in this way. This is certainly one of the most touching commemorations I have heard in a political forum. I was 6 when I first heard Alex Chilton singing The Letter. I still have the very 45 my mom bought back then. I grew up on Alex's music--from the Box Tops to Big Star, to his solo endeavors--I love it all--and his passing was deeply saddening. It just goes to show that we need to appreciate each and every day. Congressman, YOU ROCK!

Thanks for this. For a brief moment - and for probably the first time in more than a decade - this made me proud to be a Memphian and proud it's my birthplace. Though I lost my fondness for this city years ago, I am ever thankful that you have continued to remain in office and continue to serve this city. Many get elected to various posts, but few seem to truly care but yourself. RIP Alex. This city has lost a special native son, and it and the music world have lost an absolute gem this week.

No one could have done a better job of paying tribute to Alex Chilton. If our every legislator were blessed with this kind of depth intelligence, and humanity, we'd be a different country. Thanks, Rep. Cohen. Jamey Hecht, PhD

I'm encouraged that a sitting congressman knows who Alex Chilton, REM and The Replacements even are, much less taking the time to memorialize Alex. Nice work, sir!

That was pretty cool. I had read you had done that, a class thing to do. The Letter was the first song I knew all the words to as a kid, Alex Chilton meant a lot to me. That voice. I have been rediscovering him this year, his sudden passing shocked me. A moving tribute, before the House of Representatives. Alex, a shy musician would be pleased & honored by your words. In this political climate, the nicest thing I have seen in years. Best 2 you, Memphis & Tennessee. thanks from the west, Mark

Dear Mr. Cohen, thank you for this. Best regards from Sweden. May I ask you to consider guaranteed treatment to US troops for pontential PTSD after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. That would truly be supporting your troops. Best regards, Petter

Although I'm no fan of the congressman, I thank him for this. I wish he had more time on the floor for the eulogy. I was close to being moved to tears. Can we get a highway, road, or something renamed to acknowledge this great/accomplished musician from Memphis? Sad, but most kids 9or adults) don't know Alex Chilton. Memphis claims a proud musical heritage, and Alex deserves be remembered as an icon.

Alex Chilton was never appreciated for what he was: The Lennon and/or McCartney of American pop-rock songwriting. While he did several different things in his career, a lot of it was low-key. He's an example of how sometimes you need luck to make it big. Alex didn't get much of that luck and was a cult hero as a result. It seemed to work in reverse as his first big gig was a chart-topping AM radio staple but each subsequent, great outing got buried and unnoticed. But many will never forget him.
