I have been studying Spanish for about 2 years now and wish I would have discovered your channel before now. I have worked with a tutor in the past but I think you being a native English speaker you understand how we think and I retain what you teach much better than I have in the past and I wanted to thank you for doing these lessons

Welcome to the channel John. I think there are definitely some benefits from learning from a non-native speaker who shares your language. I make lessons for English speakers who are learning Spanish. I take advantage of similarities in the languages to help them learn certain aspects of Spanish more quickly, and when something is very different, I spend more time on that topic and explain it in a way that it relates to your English. That way you are more likely to remember it and use it correctly.

Brett Stadler, I beg to differ. The 10 min you are so excited about was 10 min of useless word salad. I challenge any of you who are praising this lesson, to repeat even one conjugation and translate every term into English. Unless, of course you are in an advanced stage of learning. I found this lesson most disappointing.

@@MechFarmer I agree to disagree with your begging to differ. The conjugations of the tenses are quite often a big hurdle. If this video was merely word salad unto thee, I dare suggest that you simply saw it at the wrong time in your Spanish learning career. It is also possible you simply do not jive with his style. (Shrugs.) Neither one of those is truly a bad thing, they just happen. Despite years of study, a friend of mine taught me how to speak Spanish in thirty seconds in a bar-----but without those years of study, what he taught would have been useless. O, As, A, Amos, An, the indicative conjugations, and IR and ER are similar enough for it to still work. That is what he taught me. My point is the timing of his lesson was perfect.

What I loved the most about this treatment of the subjunctive mood is that you just give the endings for the AR and the er/ir verbs. Thanks for not starting out by telling us that the endings are exactly the opposite of what they are on the present indicative. This is one of the most clear presentations of present indicative I have seen.

There is a famous song by Silvio Rodríguez, "Ojalá" which is often used by Spanish teachers to teach the subjunctive. The entire song is in this mood. Another song we all remember from our childhood, "ojalá que llueva café" by Juan Luis Guerra is also good to practice. Spanish songs feature the subjunctive heavily since it is deemed a more poetic and lyrical mood, so music is a good way to engage with it.

¡Muy interesante este video! Me da curiosidad ver como funciona cada cerebro dependiendo de su lengua materna. Algo que siempre me ha gustado del castellano es que la mayoria de las letras, siempre se pronuncian de igual manera. Cuando empecé a estudiar Inglés me causaba mucha confusión aprender los patrones de pronunciación en vez de reglas fijas. ¡Mucha suerte todos los que estén aprendiendo Español! 🌟

So, the IR verbs, don't they keep, rather than loose the stem change with nosotros ( and vostors in European Spanish) ? Like Dormir :Duerma, duermas, duerma, durmamos, durmáis, duerman. Morir behaves the same. o >> ue, but with nostros, o >>u. Sentir: sienta, sientas, sienta, sintamos, sintáis, sientan. Mentir, convertir, preferir, divertir , behave like Sentir. e >> ie but with nosotros and vosotros e >> i. Pedir: pida, pidas, pida, pidamos, pidáis, pidan. Seguir, repetir, servir, elegir, behave the same. e >>i , with all persons. So, it seems to be the general rule that -IR stem changing verbs, will keep the first letter of the stem change all over in Subjunctive. So, o >> ue, will be, U for all. e >> ie will be I for all. E to I will be I for all.

The irregular forms from dormir are not just irregular but highly irregular since irregular -IR verbs are unique in their irregularities. The subjunctive present's conjugations are: duerma duermas duerma durmamos durmáis duerman The 1st and 2nd person plural forms follow this paradigm in the preterite 3rd person, the gerund and the subjunctive present, imperfect and future.

Thanks, Paul, for this great video on the present subjunctive conjugations. There is, however, one error that I noticed. In the nosotros form, the ír verbs (like dormir) behave differently than the -ar and -er verbs that form diphthongs in the present indicative. They don't use the same form as the indicative (i.e. o-->ue, simply losing the diphthong in the nosotros) but rather drop the "e" of the diphthong, so...dormir becomes not dormamos in the pres. subjunctive, but rather durmamos. The same happens with other -ir verbs that form a diphthong in the present indicative, e.g. preferir-->prefiero (Yo indicative)-->prefiramos (Nosotros subjunctive) rather than preferamos. It's a little more complicated that you suggested, and maybe not worth worrying about, but I thought perhaps I should bring it to your attention in case you want to revise the video. I really appreciate your channel and consider you a great communicator and teacher.

To summarize, the subjunctive present for AR is the IR/ER conjugations applied to first person shape of the word. Vice versa for IR/ER, but the first person part is the same. There are weird spellings with the irregular verbs, as usual. Thanks, QRoo Paul. This is extremely helpful.

Desafortunadamente, todavía estoy en el nivel intermedio y cuando intento a aprobar el examen para conseguir un puesto como intérprete siempre suspendo.😐Y aunque trabajo como recepcionista bilingue( two dots on u) quiero más experiencia en mi campo, como interpretación en español.Quiero que me sugiera el consejo para empezar traducción y interpretación en español.

Hi great video! I’m returning after watching awhile ago. At 6:48 you say the nosotros of poder and dormir don’t change in subjunctive form. Why is the nosotros subjunctive of dormir durmamos and not dormamos?

Hi Paul, I just saw your last video where you advised termination of the Cero to Conversational series. I am sorry and disappointed that you needed to discontinue. I was making significant progress and I guess others were too. Given you have made a number of other videos, are you able to suggest the best for me to view that would contunue my Spanish learning with you. Cheers from Australia.

I haven’t memorized my subjunctive verbs yet but I have been puzzled at how to keep some of the spelling changes straight in my mind. Namely the accent marks, even on verbs that had one syllable or didn’t need accent marks to maintain consistent spellings. What I realized is that Spanish adds accent marks when there is a similar non-verb word that has all the same letters. Example: este versus esté. One is a pronoun, the latter is a subjunctive verb. Lots of other subjunctive verbs do the same thing. “Dar” is another one in the subjunctive.

Este (this), éste (THIS one), esté (the conjugated form of "estar")
@larrytruelove8659
@larrytruelove8659 2 жыл бұрын
@@ketorolac4276 Este (this one) doesn’t need an accent mark because the normal accent falls in the second to last syllable except for certain consonants, L and R being two examples. Syllable ending in L or R (plus one or two other letters) are accented consistently unless another syllable has the mark. Esté has an accent mark on the second “e” because it breaks the rule. A few other single syllable words have an accent mark to distinguish them from words with identical spelling. For example, si = if. Sí = yes (with the mark).

@@larrytruelove8659 Yes it does, when in a reply about an object. Q: "¿Este es tu lápiz? (Is this your pencil?) A: "Sí, es éste..." (yes THIS ONE is) This is a classic rule they teach us from the start in school... I see you are confused with another rule, but it's cool... Feel free to ask whatever you want. I was in the advanced Spanish class and I'm a native speaker,..

@@ketorolac4276 Okay. Please give me more information about the rule. I was confused about some rules of spelling until I figured them out for myself. It would be good to understand what I don’t know. Many Spanish speakers I know are not well educated. But now that I have time, I can consult the internet to improve my Spanish. Right now, I still don’t have a good ear. Larry

I like the straightforward way you teach and the pace. I’m still not clear on the subjunctive, it’s like 2 ways of saying the same thing, right? Why though? Do people also say the words I hope or I desire then use the other form like esta or estamos instead of esté or estemos? I just don’t get why it switches. 🤷‍♀️

I am no expert here, but I think the AR and ER/IR infinitives are backward in this video. AR generally go O, AS, A, AMOS, AN. The ER/IR infinitives go O, ES, E, EMOS and EN. Also Poner uses Pongo for I put, but the G is dropped for the rest. Please tell me if I am way off base.

When conjugating in the present indicative mood, you are correct. But, this video is shwoing how to conjugate in the present subjunctive mood. It is the keystone to learning Spanish and is often overlooked by people learning the language. I talk about when to use it in other videos. For example: Quiero ir a la playa. I want to go to the beach. QUIERO is in the present indicative. Quiero que vayas a la playa. I want you to go to the beach. VAYAS is from IR. It requires the subjunctive here.

It's a tough topic but it's easier if you focus on the constructions that trigger it. quiero que+ subjunctive. I want THAT something happens or someone does something. Quiero que vayas a la tienda. I want you to go to the store. Quiero que saques la basura. I want you to take out the garbage. I have a playlist of subjunctive triggers.
