In this video, Biology Professor (Twitter: @DrWhitneyHolden) discusses the process of conjugation in bacteria, a cool way that bacteria can obtain foreign DNA for their own use with a cell structure called a sex pilus. For information on other mechanisms that bacteria use to take up foreign DNA, see Biology Professor's videos on transformation ( • Transformation in Bact... ) and transduction ( • Transduction ). Great for MCAT Biology Review!

Thank you for sharing your talent of teaching. Many people are experts at topics like this, but very, very, very, few professors are capable of explaining and teaching scientific topics. Your videos have helped me understand and become more interested in microbiology.

Thank you, the explanation is great! I have a question though, if a F plus cell can make a sex pilus,is it possible that other plasmids or even the chromosome of that f plus bacterium be copies onto the paired bacterium instead of the fertility plasmid?
@BiologyProfessor
@BiologyProfessor 4 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question. I don’t know how often it would happen, but I assume that other genetic material could hitch a ride this way.

I"m confused. So, what happens to the fertility plasmid once everything moves from the Hfr cell to the F- cell? Does the plasmid just go away?
@BiologyProfessor
@BiologyProfessor 7 жыл бұрын
Not everything moves from the Hfr cell to the F- cell. The Hfr cell replicates part of its chromosome, and sends just that part to the F- cell through the sex pilus. The original plasmid portion remains integrated into the Hfr cell's chromosome and the part of the Hfr cell's chromosome that moves into the F- cell recombines with the F- cell's chromosome (via homologous recombination), replacing part of the F- cell's chromosome with part of the Hfr cell's chromosome. The resulting F- cell is still F- (no DNA from the plasmid), but it is a recombinant cell carrying DNA from the Hfr cell. You can read more about this here: academic.pgcc.edu/~kroberts/Lecture/Chapter%207/horizontal.html

8:38 You show the Hfr cell distributing red DNA into the F- cell but then say that the F- cell remains F- because it didn't get any of the fertility plasmid, which was coded red?

Not everything moves from the Hfr cell to the F- cell. The Hfr cell replicates part of its chromosome, and sends just that part to the F- cell through the sex pilus (so I should have drawn it in black, not red). Thank you! It sucks, they don't pay teachers enough! We're getting more and more stuck with people who completely lack this talent, and instead those who desperately need a job as long it's in their field. While those who were educated to teach, get more and more frustrated and look for higher wage jobs. It's the worse in k-12, because they hire teachers to teach completely different topics than they were actually educated to do. For instance, an english major teaching mathematics, a gymnast professional teaching science, an IT major teaching english or science. Frustrating
