I want to know how you are sure all the pitch is out of the pipe. THANKS

Great question. Using the torch, when it stops smoking, it is all out. Remaining carbon can then be brushed out with a mouthpipe brush and detergent and or acid. More recently, I have gone to melting it out and then simply using acetone to desolve the rest. Much less heat is used and no carbonizing of the pitch. Pretty slick.

Thanks! I bought a pipe of natural Horn lead pipes from George McKraken and am finally working on making some crooks@@jimflys2

I too thought the recording volume was a little low. However ...fantastic content and thank you for showing the lacquer! As for people saying the instrument was abused etc... uh there is a reason we have repair men like Jim! Stuff breaks and I guess this guy would be out of a job? Question tho.. can you not fill the pipe with sand or something similar rather than pitch? Or does the pitch have the right amount of "give" to allow you to bend the pipe? Of course with sand you would need to cap the ends to stop it falling out... Anyway pleasure to watch you work as always!

Yeah, sorry I had the stupid volume set on auto gain. Next time I will do it right. I could not edit it any hotter. I punched it up as loud as it would let me.

Where did you purchase the pitch filled lead pipe and what diameter and wall thickness was it. Do you use a tin/lead rosin core solder for soldering purposes?
@jimflys2 Жыл бұрын
Allied supply Corp. has them. Don't know the dimensions off hand. It is probably a .015" to .020" wall thickness. Standard in any case. lead tin 50/50 solder. I usually use a liquid acid flux by Stay Clean. Sometimes a rosin paste flux is used when I have to. It can help with preventing lacquer blistering.

very nice content! did you draw the leadpipe by yourself as well? Or you can purchase the straight taperd pipe somewhere else?
@jimflys23 жыл бұрын
The pipes are available at Allied Supply in Elkhorn, WI

Have you ever considered creating custom instruments?
@jimflys24 жыл бұрын
Not at all. There are too many boutique makers as it is. The big names are pretty nice too. But I am MORE than happy to work on custom horns. It is a joy.

I looked on their website and they are for professionals only so I won't be able to buy anything from them. I am an do it yourselfer. I have repaired the horn a few times but it has red rot and needs the lead pipe replaced.

Yeah, it's a closed industry for sure. Not like going into a NAPA store to get brake rotors for a 99 Honda.
