A drive about Connah's Quay, North Wales UK in March 2023.
May be of interest to ex locals etc perhaps.
I recorded external audio on this one inside the car to avoid the howling wind noise of the outside camera. Make a few observations, feel free to add/correct etc

I moved to Southern California since July 2000 from Connah’s Quay, it’s great to see familiar places again. Not been back since 2008. Lived at Wepre Hall Crescent from 1971 to 88, then Barmouth Close, 88 to 2000. No place like home ❤

Barmouth close up by kwiks , Morrisons nowadays, my nan was in St Marks avenue but moved to Dodds drive about 87. One blessing of cali is that it’s likely not been raining daily for 12 months like it has in the quay :D - oh hammersound finally closed but hot stuff is still going

The old Buckley line used to run down to the Docks. When I was a child all of Golftyn Lane was narrow like Kelsterton Lane and it started where the Spar shop (or Bevans as it was for years) is now. I often walked up Kelsterton Lane with Mum and Dad as far as where what Dad called “the Four Lanes Smithy” which was long gone then, and crossed over to come back down Golftyn Lane. It was all fields then. After the High School was built (I was in the first year there when it opened) the house building increased and now it’s hard to tell where the Quay ends and Northop Hall starts. I’ve lived in the Quay all my life but have to admit I get lost in all the new housing at the top end of the Quay.😂 Interesting that you should mention the “video” of the tramps who lived on the tip. That was an 8mm film made by my Dad, Peter Wilcock and his friend Steve Williams who appears in it as “the reporter”. It was one of a number of films they made when they were members of the Deeside Cine Club in the 1960’s. The chemist you mentioned wasn’t there. It was on the right side of the hill by the crossing in High Street. There was a chemist on Church Street run by “Johnny” Roberts in one of the shops sadly demolished to build the flats.

Brings back a lot of memories esp at t=30.34 min. I lived in Wepre villa in 1979-80 with few other students from Malaysia. We studied at Coleg Cambria (formerly Kelsterton College) for our A levels. Mrs Powell was our landlady. I believe her son's name is Jeremy Powell. Also he has two sisters. Nice video. Thanks

Hello there - I am happy that you enjoyed the video. I have done many on the channel so please have a look to see if any others are good for you. I did one of the outside of the college during lockdown (covid) but I cant find it now however it was on an old camera so not too good anyway.

Right proper was that, Andy! You even went down St. Mark's, our old turf. What happened to the red hall shop, brother? It was a gold mine and always seemed to be doing a nice trade with Simon at the helm. We can consider ourselves very lucky we knew the area as it was, when everyone took care of their gardens and fresh laundry was billowing on the clothes lines.

@@scottbillingham2221 Simon packed up and worked in the spar for a bit (old co-op) but last I heard he was in spar in Denbigh. Lovely breakfast place in the red hall garage now - sunrise breakfasts lol 😂

Red Hall shops. Chippy, Chemists, Post office, Fine Fare, butchers, hardware shop run by a man named Glyn who fixed leaks and guttering on our house, and a greengrocers at the end that sold the best range of crisps from cardboard boxes. Ah, Hedgehog flavour and baked bean flavour crisps ❤

Ahh and you finish off passing my early school days in Bryn Deva. 1968 to 1971ish (or was it 1972?) Hmm, from there it was then down to Shotton High School (Which no longer exists, although the building still does) for two years before heading to the then newly built Connah's Quay High. The Bryn Deva playing field has been sold off long ago I see. Where all the houses now are on the right up to the turning on the right by all the bollards and yellow barricades as you come to the video end, was all playing field back then. Cheers

Glad you enjoyed mate, it's a pretty niche audience and already has a dislike within an hour lols but this is for the likes of yourself and I am glad it finds people who are interested to see how things have changed :) - plus I hope in 50 years people can use this to look back at how the City of Deeside developed lols, be big enough by then the way its going :D

Wehey, Cairndale avenue in the daylight at last ! Nice :) I think, from my vague memories of walking from Cairndale to the Kwik Save to get shopping ( early/mid 70's), and walking back home from Connah's Quay High School each day, Golftyn Lane did extend all the way up, as back then, the limit of the new housing development was more or less Ffford Llanarth (from the Broad Oak side, the other side to the west of that road still being plots under construction etc) Don't quote me on that though, as the roads around Kwik Save at the time were very much still a work in progress. Talking of council garage sites, yep, a lot of them around the country are being demolished and replaced by housing. Same here in Peacehaven, as the newbuild flat block I'm living in, was until 6 years ago, you've guessed it, council garage site!

@@Memory_Gatherers Arrived as in born or as in moved there ? If the latter, it would be interesting to know if you went straight to Connah's Quay High and recall the names of any of the teachers there ? With 1976 being the year we moved from Connah's Quay to Greasby, the teachers at that time would still be the same lot (I only recall the name of one of them now)

@@theagglet me cast my mind back and see if I can dredge it for names. Mr Lancaster (English) Mrs Shaw nee Williams (drama), Mr Powell (PE), Miss Tilston (Religion), Mr Pamphilon (science), Mr Evans (Social?)

@@DelosFive Mr Powell rings a bell. There was also Mr Henderson for biology I think and Mr Carlisle for chemistry (also my particular form teacher for the morning 'log in' with the register) What I need to do, now I think of it, is dig out all my school reports from that period of time and see the comments from each teacher on each subject. I'd forgotten I could do that and luckily I know which drawer the reports are residing in !

@theagg great to see some memories one of the reasons I do these is for locals to drop information in and get some conversations going. I hope others start doing a few videos eventually here because not many do. I love looking back at photos from f Deeside’s history and I’m hoping one day when I’m long gone these will be a bit of an insight into life here now. Even looking back at some of my earlier videos you can see changes to the towns.

My Great Grandfather was a mariner who sailed from CQ. I still have some Imari ware he brought back from Japan and a saki jug and cups plus a portrait of him and his second wife. It is said of him he liked the Irish and took chickens with him to Ireland during the Famine.

Loads of history to the docks here, we had rail lines to the dockside, trains, carriage repairs, fishermen and cargo a nearby station. And now it’s a little bit run down but you never know it may bounce back one day.

@@Memory_GatherersHope so. It was a very important port. That bit of coast Connah’s Quay eastwards had a fantastic concentration of manufacturing industry, though rayon making and spinning was very smelly. We once smelled Courtaulds in Bala, 40 miles away!

@@scottbillingham2221...Yes I do, I remember the Rawlings family very well from my childhood many years ago, they lived on the bend of Viking Way as the Road curves round close to the ally that ran @ the side of there house. I remember Craig Rawlings especially he was a very good skateboarder and a bit of a Rap metal sort of lad. His dad kept bee hives in the Back garden, not sure if they still live there or if the hives are still there? but ain't seen Craig Rawlings for Decades, he Just disappeared one day and was never seen again (not by me anyway) But I did ask about his whereabouts not to long ago to others that also knew him and was told he became a recluse later on in life and moved away... I'm not sure if its true but I hope he's ok wherever he is or may be, the most vivid memory i have of him (and the very last time I seen him) was him speed skating Down Fford Llannarth (Golftyn hill) long before the speed bumps were there and it was Just smooth tarmac, anyway he was doing some speed under the bright lights of the street lamps as it was late on a summers night and I Just stood in silence at the speed he was doing on a skateboard. No helmet, no pads Just pure menace and no fear. He glided down that hill perfectly while taking the bends no problem. He was always out and about way back in the day when I was a kid. I'd like to find out where he Disappeared to and how he is. I wasn't close with him as he was older than me and mixed in skateboarder circles but I knew and spoke to them all and used to watch them do tricks from time to time. He is Definitely from the old-skool for sure.
