Primitive Skills

Күн бұрын

I went to catch some fish in the stream to make dinner. I used lime mortar to make a grinding stone.
The next day, I went to the forest to collect trees to frame the grinding stone
Take advantage of the water power of the waterwheel to run the grinding stone
Because there is little water in this season, the roof rock does not rotate strongly. Come summer it will be as expected
Have fun watching the video!
The subtitle as well is the detailed article I will update at the website "primitiveskills.net", the official website of Primitive Skills

Is Pine Pitch even possible without Pine/Cedar trees that make sap like that? an evergreen with a lot of super sticky sap? Honestly curious. Sorry, dumb question after re-reading... I assume the boiling aspect of it all would make nearly any tree sap quite usable for the job! Good idea!

@@APeopleOSRS not stupid. It really does depend on the trees available in the area. Pine is best for that, as they are the trees that have the most resin in their sap. Pine trees are not always abundant or present in certain parts of the world. I may see them every day in the US, Europe, or northern Asia, but if the area he inhabits is super close to the equator, or a separate enough island, it may have very few pine. Or nah, and he just doesn't care much cuz he can always replace parts with a fair amount of elbow grease.

He did it! He's started to tap the waterwheel. Just imagine all of the things he can now make: a sawmill to cut wood with far less effort, a connecting rod to reach his bellows, or a water-driven pottery wheel. I'm reasonably confident that if he had copper he could make a solenoid, find some way to magnetize a piece of iron (or maybe find a piece of magnetite), then convert that rotational power to electrical power!

Electric power would only become useful in the faaaaar future, generating electricity and making use of it are a whole different thing. Plus, making a strong magnet isn't exactly easy and copper is a major pain to get and I doubt there's much abundant there. So that one might be off the table. Other than that though, there's a huge range of possibilities and all those suggestions are great (although some might be a significant amount of work to change the direction of rotation).

do you have any idea of what it would take to forge a usable circular saw blade of that size? you're talking at least a 16 inch/ 32 centimeter perfectly flat disk blade but more likely a 20 inch for it to be worth the effort of making it and they have enough trouble making those reliably in factories!!

You could try making some wooden gears. This would allow you to make higher rotation speed but with less torque for something like a spinning wheel. Or you could have a slower rotation speed but with more torque for something like a flour mill.

Awww ...it makes me brain hurt... okay recapping.. to get the stone turning faster we need a smaller gear on the driveshaft ( waterwheel) turning a bigger gear on the stone wheel... just like on a bicycle huh?
@jyrgenruut
@jyrgenruut 2 жыл бұрын
@@gomezgadgetyeharr9248 As an example, if we wish to get 2x higher speed for the whetstone, then the waterwheel side needs for example 20 teeth, and the whetstone side 10 teeth, because by the time the waterwheel has done one full 20 teeth rotation, the whetstone will have had to rotate 2x of the 10 teeth gear, thus, 2x the speed. However, the speed comes at the cost of torque, so it's not like one could make the whetstone insanely fast :)
@StuffandThings_

The one issue I see would be an extra source of friction, which is already plaguing the water wheel. Still within the realm of possibility though, and would be very useful for changing the axis of rotation as well.

Make some oil or grease and you will get less strain on the water wheel and the friction of grinding tools won't slow it down as much. You could also make a larger end on the water wheel that goes to a smaller end on the stones axle and get an increase in speeed. Just an idea. Again, you are amazing.

If you want, you can convert the monjolo into a more modern version called the watermill. This way it can grind up your rice and other grains more finely, more quickly, and you won't have to pull the flow of water away to power it. You just have to hook it up to the water wheel. The only difficulty of it will be to do the math properly to get the gears to link up well. This was first invented and used in china from the year 30 AD, so it's been around for a while.

Next time if you harvest a soybean, or ground 🌰 you can make vegetable oil from it, just for your food variant 😉, dry it on the sun for couple of days then fry it with hot sand and press it.

How effective is the grinding wheel? It looks like it crumbles easily, and I wonder how long it would last/how effectively it would sharpen your tools, but I'm no expert
@dearmas9068
@dearmas9068 2 жыл бұрын
Hes dragging it up the sharp side of the blade rather than against it. Not as effective for sharpening, but it should help it last while still doing the job. If it were a true whetstone he could do it either way, and get excellent results.

@@dearmas9068 Often I use the first cut against the blade and drag the last cut for the finer, honing effect. It removes the burr from the edge.

@@cecilcooper6210 right on. I dont think he will have that option with this wheel.

its made of cement essentially, so it will crumble over time with use, but a real whetstone would have taken weeks to chisel. On the flip side, the cement wheel is easily replaceable, just a new mold and some time to dry and make smooth again and its back in action

I would suggest a Lubricating system for your bearings, water would probably work fine for a while but if you are able to tap into oils that would work alot better, although i beleive extracting oils takes some considerable work at teh Tech era you are working in. another alternative if you could get work on it is capture the Wood Gas from the charcoal. run that through a tank of water and you will get Creosote which (while being a decent wood sealant, biocide and fungicide) will help lubricate the bearings. a final alternative would be to create a form of soap from wood ash by putting the ash into water, filtering off the solids and keeping the liquid. this now contains a mixture of hydroxides which will turn any fat or oils into soap, even the oils from your skin or, more suited to larger production, oils from the fish you were able to catch.

You should add gears to the water wheel so that your whetstone will turn faster in a drier season. Make the gears removable though, so that in a rainy season you can take the gears off and it will turn at a regular speed.

All I keep thinking is I'd build some dowel rod gearing and forge a primitive saw blade for that water wheel. Yeah I might not cut very fast but you could cut uniform lumber though.
