By far, this is the best and most complete explanation I've found! This will save me much time and frustration fiddling with my Beryl travel router, which I've only occasionally been able to get working in repeater mode in hotels. I usually end up hunting for an Ethernet port behind the TV, which is a good backup but rare to find these days. Thank you! 👍

Thank you! You just gave us all another idea too! Finding an Ethernet port would probably provide the best speeds too!

A lot of video's about these routers but not much for how to make it work when abroad. Got mine today and this video is everything I needed to know. Thank you

hello, I found your videos helpful and enlightening; would you be willing to give me professional and personal consulting to be able to set up a vpn to be able to work abroad and not get caught by the company that always wants me to work in one location?

and, have you seen a battery powered version of such a travel router with this 「captive portal」 feature? for use cases like in other public wifi (coffee place or airport or on cruise) locations where not in room, it might not be easy to find plugin power?

They are powered by USB-C so you can use any battery bank and cable that supports fast charging (5 Volts 3 Amps). If you want one that has a built in battery, the Puli AX may be an option, but the form factor is pretty large. In my initial tests, this battery bank did not meet the advertised capacity, but it has been a reliable battery with a great form factor: amzn.to/3wdrtaO #ad and it was small enough to pass by TSA. At 100 Watts it it strong enough to power a laptop, the router, and a phone. The battery life varies greatly depending on what I am working on.

Sounds complicated to get router to connect to a hotel that uses a portal. This is exactly what I was looking for except I thought it was going to be much easier to get the router to connect to the hotel portal

At first I thought the first way was easier, but really I think the second way is easier now. Unfortunately the hotels make it difficult.

the GL.iNet is a Chinese company and usually they can make the product very cheap; don't understand why this product can sell at a pricey $100+ label, while many other travel routers sell at half price or even less price point, usually these Chinese copycats product can copy features from each other very fast, hopefully @justin can find 2 or 3 vendor products and do a thorough comparison review? Thanks!

The Beryl AX goes on sale often for about $80. Companies that race to the bottom on price often overlook keeping their products updated. I also pay a lot of money for Ubiquiti products but the software updates and reliability are worth the extra money. If the Beryl AX is outside your budget, the Opal is still a great travel router, it is just not ideal for video streaming or conferencing. That being said, if there is another brand you would like me to look at, I will consider it!
