Connect USB drives and SD cards to Android Phone & Tablet

A quick video that shows how to use an OTG adapter to read USB drives and SD cards on your Android phone or Android Tablet.
Most Android devices support On-The-Go connections, known as OTG for short. This allows you to plug a small adapter into the micro USB charge port and then connect thumb drives and card readers to your phone.
This is a great way to share files or to transfer files between friends. It's also an easy way to expand the storage of your phone, especially if you don't have an internal micro SD slot. You can put a lot of movies onto a thumb drive and then watch them on your android tablet using the OTG cable.
Another great use is for when you're on vacation and have spent the day taking photos on your DSLR or videos on your GoPro. You can remove the SD card from your camera and then review your photos and videos on your tablet or phone instead of having to rely on the small low quality screen built into your camera.

Great vid. Some say that file explorer crashes after trying to move a file or delete. You accessed files ok but have you tried moving files from the cell to the USB?

Great Video can anyone tell me if I can continue to use my 200GB Sandisk Micro SD inside my phone (it's permanently mounted or adopted) and then add another storage device using the adapter seen in video. I use a Samsung J3 6 SM-J320W8 which is said to have a 256GB Internal Micro SD max. THNX

Is there a way to have your camera save your video to the external card instead of main storage? The phone I just bought Oneplus 8 only has 128gb storage. If I want to record higher resolution videos for extended periods, well it will get full really fast. So I'm trying to find out if it's possible to do as I asked so I can just buy a 1tb external.

OTG Checker says my android 9.0 doesn't support it. It supports flash drives and sd cards just fine. I'm trying to connect my endoscope with no success but it worked once no so long ago. Any tips out there?

yes, you need to make sure your phone is not writing or you will end with a bricked sd card. The function appears in your drop down menu and in your options menu under "storage"

I have the problem that my tablet recongized otg, knows it has an USB storage there but cannot read the files on the external drive (fat formated). Anyone has an idea why is that so? Same drive and same cable runs on the mobile phone with no problems.

Question: Most tablets are limited to a 32GB expandable SD storage, meaning if I plugged a 128GB SD in, it would only recognize and use as 32GB. If i were to plug in say a 1TB drive this way, would I still be limited as I am with the SD slot? or will it read up to any storage size? Trying to find a way to be able to keep and play hundreds of movies/shows on a tablet. Thanks in advance if anyone can answer, or point me in the right direction.

1TB storage usually needs external 5v power, such as from a powered USB hub. but 128gb sd card or flash (pen) drive would work fine. However, sometimes 128gb and larger storage is formatted as exFAT or NTFS and you need either Paragon exFAT/NTFS app or MiXplorer app or similar to read the data.

I have a 256gb micro sd card and formated it to Fat32 from ExFat32 and it works perfectly in ALL my phones and 3 tablets ( I buy and sell them thats why so many :-) ) There are Small windows programs that do this easily, but with Fat32 you cannot use above 4gb files to watch movies or videos.

Unfortunately your Android phone has to support OTG and not all do. I have tried everything and anything and nothing works. What's worse is, if you download to another device, or save to Google drive etc, and tbe then try to view on Android or Chromebook, still won't due to type of file (AVI). I have only been able to view my own phone files on my Note 9.

+Rick Bleda As Ruben said, unfortunately a regular OTG adapter wont work on Apple devices. But there are similar products sold for iphone / ipad. On Amazon / Lazada or other shopping sites, search for 'apple camera connection kit' or 'iphone card reader'. The problem with the ones for Apple devices is that if you buy the official Apple one, it's very expensive and if you buy a generic there's a risk it wont work after some updates.
