Newer android phones no longer need any external power. They even power up spinning 2.5mm hdd using single usb c cable. New android phones read/write both exFat and NTFS equally well.

Thanks for the video! Do you have any experience with ext4 formatted drives? Android seems to recognize ntfs drives fine, but movies streaming from the drive stutter badly (and drive access is virtually constant at all times for no apparent reason). Ext4 formatted drives (my preference) which should be recognized - after all, the basis of android is linux - are not recognized at all! Any ideas?

I could not get this to work on a Galaxy A9 with or without a powered hub. However, I didn't have to root my phone to get this to work on hard drives formatted with exFAT. I just reformatted two hard drives using exFAT, an option under Windows. I am now reading a Western Digital 2 Terabyte hard drive using OTG USB. No problems. No overheating even without external power. Nada. I am using the Total Commander App to select files with M557 Bluetooth mouse, great for watching videos with a head mounted device and iPlay SBS Player. Works with 2D & 3D videos.

I have been trying to figure out how to do this for 2 years with no luck. My Samsung galaxy tab A 10.1 has the old type micro usb port (same as on ps3 controller ) and I can't find a way to make it work. No luck with computer stores, cell phone store and even the guy at Radio shack was stumped. Most of the had never even heard of a usb otg cable much less one with power supplied for the connected hdd. It is mega frustrating. Can you give me any idea if this will work for me. My hdd is Toshiba 1terra bite in fat format (works on my ps3). Thanks.

The hard drive only has one USB output, so once you plug it into the power bank, you would't be able to connect it to your phone. The only other options I can give are to either try plugging it into your phone with just the OTG cable and no extra power source, or to wait until you can afford the powered USB hub.

This might work, but I cannot say for sure. First I would suggest plugging the hard drive directly into the OTG cable that is plugged into your phone, just to test if it works. If you hear any noises coming from the drive, promptly unplug it. Other than that, I would recommend waiting until you have a powered USB hub. Hope this helps.

The one that I am using uses a wall plug, so you could only use a battery if it had a normal wall outlet. So for a power bank, no.

Michael John David You could try using just an OTG adapter with your hard drive, but it is not recommended, because it may not supply the power that your hard drive needs. If you choose to do this, be cautious, and unplug your hard drive if it makes any unusual sounds, like clicking. Remember, this would be at your own risk.

Just how you would normally remove drives. Go into USB devices in settings and eject it.

Does your device recognize the drive at all? If your device doesn't recognize the drive, it will be safe to remove by just unplugging it. If it does recognize it, just make sure no files are currently being copied, and that no programs are using it, then you are safe to unplug.
