Connect your Boya MM1 to Smartphone (Boya vs onboard Mic!)

Hey guys!
Today I will be showing you guys on how to connect your external microphone to your smartphone. In this video I will be using the Boya MM1 Microphone on my Iphone 6.
The Boya MM1 does not require a battery which is why this microphone is so awesome and compact, a great addition for smartphones and gopros
We will also be testing how it an onboard phone mic compares to an external mini shotgun microphone the BOYA MM1.

Regarding the click issue, yes I'm using the adapter for iphone 7 plus. Iphone 6s does not need an adapter. Both have this issue. I don't think it's the cable because the mic works fine with my android phone. One thing I found out out is with the iphones, if I change the sample rate from 44.1 khz to 48khz in my video recording app, the issue is gone. Which app did you use to record videos?

TRRS does not work with my phones (oppo A83 and umidigi power 3) using the pre installed camera app. I tried the open camera app and that introduced unbearable hiss to the recording that was not present on the internal microphone. Are there any other apps that you can suggest I try?

@@imraphraph no I haven't tried that one. I've just seen it on the play store and it costs £11.49 which would be great if I was going to use it often. I am using the phone to video record myself reading children's story books for the children in my school home learning. I bought the microphones to reduce the hollow effect of the bedroom I record in and to get rid of hiss. As a consequence of trying other apps to work with the microphones the internal microphones of both phones I have used have vastly improved sound quality and the hiss level is almost non existent. I can't explain why but I suspect the apps altered the way the internal microphones receive high frequencies. I tried the microphones with a very old netbook and it had the desired sound quality I expected for the phones. So from that I conclude it is not the microphones at fault but how my phones interact with the software. Thank you for replying. Reality Rich as long as the headphone jack reads both ways such as an input and output it should work without any issues. If you have a 3.5mm handsfree kit with a mic and it works on your phone this setup will work.

Hi I just bought this Boya Mm1, the manual says it provides the TRRS connector, but how do we differentiate if its a wrong one? (Since u mentioned that they have slight difference)

I brought the mic back to the shop. Tried 2 other mics of the same model and heard the same popping/ticking. Even tried them on the shop owner's iphone and same issue. I also tried the rode videomicro and heard the same thing. So maybe it's not the mic but the iphone. Maybe some update screws up the mic port somehow. Which ios version are you using?

Hi, good day. As iPhone 8 needs a lightning cable to audio jack adaptor, what if add an adaptor splitter that is for microphone and headphone, so I can use the microphone and hear the voice I speak at the same time, right?

I have actually not used that method before, but for phones with no audio jack I would recommend using a mic like the Instamic pro which I really recommend if you can afford it.

No besides post-processing the record and setting the gain or normalize the audio. Meanwhile there were android updates I have not checked if that makes any difference.

Hey Matt, I think it's only worthwhile if you need an external mic during your travels. I wouldn't recommend it if you are using it for professional video productions. Best use case are for video blogging, to be used on a Gopro, smartphone and possibly a mirrorless if you need that extra sound during windy situations.

Hey Mamelodi yes you can but I would suggest getting a lapel if you can afford it. Even a wired lapel would be clearer than a shotgun of that price range. You can check out my other video where i test the Boya and the sennheiser in loud sounds.

Gaming with Samip hey yes you can but you would need to configure your recording to include the audio. If you are using an iphone I can suggest getting something like instamic if you have the cash its much better for that purpose and its hands free.

Philen Naidu good day, I have not used the boya lav mic as I have a sennheiser g3 but I have to say its dependent on your situation. If you have a noisy background and need to move around I would recommend a lav, this is assuming you are using it to vlog or an interview. Microphones like the mm1 I would use for non professional purposes of getting better audio from event coverage but when dialogue is concern I would use a lav over a shotgun

Hey, it should sound better than your phone mic as long as it is used in a not so noisy environment. Its a budget mic, so you wont get much difference if you were to record in a crowded area 👌🏼 hope that helps

Can you take a picture of the bottom of the mic and put it up somehow? I'm very new to this and I have no idea how it attaches to a camera or tripod or anything. Does it screw on? Does it clip on? All the vidoes/pics/etc only show it when it's already sitting atop a camera and I'm using it with a phone & tripod and trying to figure out if it can just screw on the screwy bit on the tripod. technically that is possible, yes but I suggest you get a proper USB C to TRS. There should be quite a few adapters.

If you are using a gimbal try to go for bluetooth mics 😬 so it does not interfere with your movements

There is a slight difference between the two cables and they may look exactly the same with minor difference it has an extra ring a lot of people assume they are the same. The mic i bought came with the standard trs to trs cable. There may be suppliers selling them with the trrs version but I have yet to encounter one

don't fret my friend. For Iphone 7 and onwards, do purchase a lightning cable to audio jack adaptor. I do not use any special applications just the normal Iphone features.
