I don't just have one mighty game room to rule them all :-) - I split my collection into two rooms - the consoles that have HDMI or at least Component (YPbPr) output are hooked up to a HDTV in the family living room downstairs - that's my PS2 & PS3, and my brothers Wii & Xbox 360. all older consoles are connected to a SDTV plasma in one of my rooms upstairs - as of now it is PS1, saturn, mega drive and NES. this room is also the home of my hifi system with tape deck and turntable driving a pair of JBL "control one" speakers and a 15" subwoofer for some more low-end so basically I'm running a two-TV setup just like you but with each TV in a separate room.

Also Ps3 hdmi output has always been brilliant since the fat models. The early Xbox 360s without hdmi port are the worst ever (firstly easy RRoD and then also unreliable dvd drives, besides the absence or the little capacity of the hard disks), so I don't see the sense of still use one of them with the last stingray model which is superb and not expensive at all by now. ;-)

@madfinntech9 жыл бұрын
Nice. Me being in Europe I just use RGB from everything (even RGB modded N64) before 6th gen. Then upscale it with converter like yours, but instead of composite to HDMI mine does RGB SCART to HDMI (superior picture quality compared to composite). What comes to 6th gen, for those I use device that upscales component to HDMI. Newer stuff supports naturally HDMI so no reason to go with any other method. Then there are usual HDMI swithcers and finally HDMI splitter for home theater setup input and other one goes to my capture device. All consoles hooked up once and with maximum picture quality. Note: I don't have a Dreamcast or consoles without RGB support. Obviously I'd hook up Dreamcast via VGA to HDMI and anything not capable of doing real RGB (no mods available or just composite or RF) it would just those connection I guess, fortunately I don't have any desire to play them.

Great tutorial and some great tips here. Two questions: 1.)the xbox 360 - why use component on that and not HDMI? HDMI looks so much clearer on that system. 2.) There is a kickstarter for a component cable for the Dreamcast -- would you consider swapping to that once available? Reason I ask, there are many games on the dreamcast that do not support VGA output and trying to run them results in the image looking like shit or not showing up at all. Keep up the great work MJR!!!
@RareDivers9 жыл бұрын
The Jimbo Channel Can the Dreamcast even support component without modification? For the few games that dont use VGA, just use RGB. The quality is still amazing. Cant record gameplay with HDMI. Component allows gameplay to be recorded, and still be in HD. Otherwise, yes, HDMI is still way superior to component.
@MrJimbofox9 жыл бұрын
Vanguard According to the kickstarter for the new cable, yes it can. I actually was not aware you couldn't record gameplay with HDMI out. That's good to know since I was planning on using my Retron 5 for gameplay vids but I guess that's not happening now. Damn.
@MrJimbofox9 жыл бұрын
Vanguard What do you mean by RGB for the dreamcast? Are you talking about composite?
@RareDivers9 жыл бұрын
The Jimbo Channel RGB is a "mode" within VGA. It is basically non progressive. It uses the physical VGA cable, but you need a VGA box to switch between VGA and RGB mode. RGB is also present in Scart cables, called RGB scart. A European format that is the best quality for multiple 4th and 5th gen consoles. All in all, get a VGA box called the "Toro DC VGA Box" From beharbros. By far the best quality VGA box on the market. Does absolutely everything, and the build quality is top notch. As for the HDMI thing, there are devices called "HDMI strippers" that allow gameplay to be recorded. But I am unsure of the legality of them. :P Interesting to hear about the Dreamcast component Kickstarter. Thanks!

Throw away all those composite cables and go to SCART. Get a SCART to hdmi adapter and buy the appropriate SCART cable for each system. The quality is stunning. Although a few systems don't support SCART, so the best you can do is RGB, or at the bare minimum, S-Video. Plus, systems like the Amiga CD32 can then be used on NTSC TVs, because the adapter bypasses the region coding and 50hz issues!

***** If I'm right it's, for reference I'm U.S. so no SCART, but if I'm right from worst to best it's RF, then the Composite that's mono (Yellow-Video, White-Sound (R)), then Composite Stereo (Vellow-Video, White Sound(R), Red-Sound(L)), Then Component(RGB), Then HDMI, and possibly if they somehow figure it out in the future then Wireless. Am I right in that?
@RareDivers9 жыл бұрын
***** Between Composite and Component, would be S-Video also. Its quite rare for modern TVs to have it, but it is very common on TVs like 2006 back. We will have 4K HDMI later this year, so. Woot. :P
@Jmeon4eva9 жыл бұрын
Vanguard I still count 4KHDMI in the same bracket as HDMI, because all they do is enable it to go into 4k, and doesn't the XBOX ONE ship WITH a 4kHDMI compatible cable? I know SONY said they ship the PS4 with a 3D ready HDMI, but MS made a point of saying 4K rated.
@RareDivers9 жыл бұрын
***** Apparently, all HDMI 1.4 cables support 4K already. So any cable from the past 2-3 years support 4K. HDMI 2.0 which came out in 2013 allows 4K at 60 frames per second, whereas 1.4 maxed out at 24.

Vanguard scart and svideo are pretty much the same, svhs format itself is expensive. By the way I tried years ago the advantages between composite and scart with my PSone, after I bought a real scart cable for it: gamma is now correct and not too high, colors are vibriant and definition and clarity way higher, just as you expect from an rgb connection.
@RareDivers9 жыл бұрын
MasterControl90 Scart is a very powerful format. Although I would have to disagree on S-Video and Scart being the same. S-Video compresses the image into 2 pins, while Scart uses something like 16 pins to separate color, and detail. I am by no means an expert in this stuff. The technical, and scientific data is somewhat beyond me, but from what I have experienced, my eyeballs like Scart more. :P Sucks that S-VHS is so expensive, i'd jump right on it!

I own all of these old consoles and want to play them with the cartridges and with the controllers. Is there any way I can get these game systems displaying legitatmately good displays? Don't know if you know this but studio reference monitors have a sweet spot and actually they are made to focus the best sound in that sweet spot (that is both of the speakers in front of you but pointing in to your ears) they need to be in the perfect length between each other and between you ( basically making a perfect triangle between you and both speakers, the same length that is in between speakers, the same length you need to be in front of the speakers) . If you have them facing like normal sound systems you can have a lot of bad frequencies that can muffle the sound

For all Nintendo fans out there, you can easily hook up all of its consoles on one HDTV with at least 2 HDMI ports and 1 Component port. You'll only need to buy the Framemeister XRGB Mini and the correct cables for each system. Hook up direct on the TV: NES on through RF, Wii through Component and Wii U through HDMI. Hook up on the XRGB Mini: SNES through RGB, N64 through S-Video and GameCube through D-Terminal. Then hook up the XRGB Mini on the TV through HDMI. Important to note that you can do this without ANY modification on the consoles and even using official Nintendo cables if you want. This also gives you the best image quality (again, without mods) for each console except NES.

My 2 cents (US-based) 1 - N64 can easily output over S-video, a major improvement over composite. In my case, the composite upscaler I already had also had S-video! That RadioShack switch may also have S-video connections, mine does. 2 - Component over composite is the way to go for PS2 - between the signal quality and upscaling, composite will blur to pixel sizes; the residual blur from component is sub pixel and increases sharpness greatly (especially for text and detailed maps) 3 - The benefits of hardware upscalers (separate, powered boxes - even the cheap ones) over software upscalers (like in HDTVs) is that hardware can output with practically zero lag. Software upscalers causes lag because the electronic signal needs to be parsed into a digital series of numbers, run through a higher level program and then converted back down to an electronic signal, which can add potentially hundreds of milliseconds of lag. Hardware upscalers don't because the circuits apply the conversion and upscaling directly to the signal - no conversion necessary, which should apply practically zero lag.

Metal Jesus, instead of using that composite to hdmi scaler, you should get a RGB Scart to Component converter, there is no lag and looks amazing! They however do not work on newer LCD TV's, it may work if your LCD tv is old enough. It works on all CRT's.

I've been converting everything to RGB (SCART) and Component for a few years now (down to just the GameCube, used for GB/C/A games, needing the upgrade from S-Video). A nice improvement over composite for anyone looking to upgrade their retro game setup.

All those older RF consoles can be upgraded to Composite or Svideo. Speaking of which Svideo is supported by many of the consoles here and would look much better upscaled vs composite.

I only have my Wii U, Xbox 360, PS2, and N64. The PS2 and N64 are running AV component out through a switchbox. My Wii U is obviously HDMI. But my 360 I have set up for AV component out through the same switchbox as my PS2 and N64, as well as HDMI. Now it only puts out HDMI and it looks so much better.

Thanks for the room tour, MJ! But you should definitly go with an RGB signal for these console wich support it natively, without modification : Sega Genesis/CDX Sega Master System Sega Saturn Super Nintendo Playstation 1 All you need is a RGB Scart cable for each console, and then either, or both : -a RGB SCART to component adapter to hook to your CRT -a RGB SCART to HDMI adapter to hook up to your hdtv This will provide a big jump in picture quality, trust me :) It is so worth it, you'll flip out I promise lol

Others have alluded to RGB in previous comments. I don't know if you're a videophile, but, composite is nearly the worst way to get video output from your old consoles. Nearly all consoles built between eras of the NES and Dreamcast can output RGB 240p signal. For today's TVs, some kind of scaler converts that signal to HDMI (including analog L/R audio). The audio can be tapped into from the scaler if you want it to go elsewhere. Scalers can range from $40 to $400, although in my opinion the $40 one is perfectly fine. The downside in many cases is that modding the console to tap into the signal from the motherboard is required. Then there's the cost of the scaler, SCART cables and perhaps a SCART switch. Some switches can switch automatically (maybe google that)! This can be a lot of work and $, but many people think it's worth it for crystal clear video on a modern TV from an original console. Take a look at retrorgb.com. Getting RGB from old consoles is his obsession.

I got the Atari 2600 and then realized that modern TVs don't have the screws that the old one's had so I bought an adapter called the Atari 2600 RF TV Coaxle F Plug Female Adapter. Big name for such a tiny piece but it plugs into the end of the Atari cord and screws into the back of the Cable input. I think I only paid like $8 for it off Ebay. But it works.
@chrisbidwell8959 жыл бұрын
RE: RF cables I saw you were using one of those manual tv/game switch boxes for your 7800. If you are forced to use RF, switch boxes introduce a ton of interference into the picture. Since you are not using RF to pick up television signals, ditch the switch box and plug your rf cable directly into your coaxial input on your television with a coaxial F plug female adapter. You screw the adapter right into your TV (or RF Switchbox) coaxial input, and plug the rf cable directly into the adapter. You can get one on amazon for a buck, and you get the added bonus of cleaning up the cable clutter a bit.

RGB cables and a frameister mini will definitely make those retro 90's consoles look a LOT better on your modern hdtv.....systems like the SNES, SMS, Genesis, Playstation and Sega Saturn all supported RGB through SCART cables which you can still buy on eBay to this day.

Living in the UK many consoles I brought on eBay came with scarts so I had brought composite cables for them or modded consoles with RF cables to composite and I had purchased 3 in 1 out composite devices and have them daisy chained to my on composite connector on my 3D TV with my HD consoles I got a 5 in 1out HDMI device connected to my sound system which has 3 in 1 out it's the best option as I game in my bedroom and I have my 2 PCs set up on the opposite side of the room I had to create a device which splits the output as I have one going to my 3D TV and one to a TV where I can play light gun games it took me time to perfect but got it all hooked up and working so all my consoles are playable

Rather than use the old switch boxes for RCA Composite to Cable conversion, I suggest using a simple "female RCA to male F-type" connector. They cost about $1.50, and are much more reliable, and don't lose as much signal, for the same end result.
