Well you're not wrong. we only got a remaster of Super Mario Galaxy 1. (The game already looks amazing so it's not that bad that it didn't get a remake) it kinda sucks for the Super Mario Galaxy 2 fans, since it's still only playable on a Wii or Wii U, and the only way to make it look nicer is either use Emulation, or use an mClassic with a Wii U.

I got one and use it with my Wii, Wii U and Xbox 360 via an HDMI splitter. While it’s a pretty subtle change, it does help with making the image sharper and smoothing out some jagged pixels on the screen. My Wii benefits from it the most since the M-Classic upscales it to HD-like graphics. I don’t recognize any latency issues or lag either.

This thing is pretty amazing, Skyward Sword really looked much cleaner and easier on the eyes, I definitely will be buying one of these fo shizzle. One of the great ways this tech could be used is in laptops, getting a decent serving of AA, decent upscaling, overall improved visual fidelity for no performance penalty would be ideal for a gaming laptop, they could even licence the tech to T.V and monitor manufactures. Maybe even Nintendo could implement it into the next Switch somehow, both in portable mode and docked mode, you could really use this tech to great effect with something like the Switch or any console for that matter.

Doom Guy PS2 will always be best played on a CRT, as most games support 480i maximum. Some support 480p, but 480p never looks that good as it has to be scaled unless you are using a 480p native TV. 480p is really annoying as 480p LCD’s don’t really exist anymore, meaning you’ll need to use a pretty old LCD, which unfortunately means you’ll have pretty poor black levels. A 480p CRT won’t have to scale and will have perfect black levels, but they can’t handle 480i properly, meaning you’ll need another giant CRT for 480i, wasting more space than a 480p LCD.

I understand that you can only use the cables you have. But with a higher quality cable, you will get a better image for the mcable to process. Right now it just processes blurry unsharp images. SNES games via a scart cable will look much better than the composite you used and will also give a much better result. Perhaps this video is meant more for a general retro game fan who does not have all this equipment. But if you own a retrotink and this mcable, then you're already in the price range of an OSSC so you might as well go further. On the other hand, when you show of the gamecube stuff, then the video gets interesting. Then it actually gives the mcable a high quality signal to work with and shows of it's true potential.

I dunno, it looks like an emulation filter such as super sai. I will stick with OSSC & component / RGB SCART etc.
@alxjones4 жыл бұрын
It is exactly the same as those filters. This is just a stick with a few upscaling filters built in. For pixel based games, you get a smear effect, but for polygon based games it's not like anti aliasing. OSSC can still benefit from an upscaling filter for these games, though of course that's a matter of opinion.

It's strange that I haven't seen anybody complain about the fact that it only upscales up to 1440p when it should upscale all the way to 4K. After all, there's no such thing as a 1440p TV and the standard is 4K. Another thing I'd like to see Marseille implement into their next version would be a frame interpolation feature. A lot of people don't like frame interpolation, but personally I think it's great when it's done right.

Both should work but it depends on the resolution and the console, some OSSC formats (e.g. 960p or 720p SNES) can be weird and might not work with the cable or your TV, but more normal consoles like Saturn and PS1 or N64 will work just fine I think. I've always said that decent anti aliasing would go a long long way to making the Wii gaming experience more pleasant. As it is, it's pretty horrific. Doesn't work on the PS2, because the graphics are too muddy, it can't detect a thing. Original Xbox doesn't really need it, and it even doesn't help the Game Cube much, not sure why. Great review. Video nerd note: you could probably use its full processing mode and then tell your display that it's a 4:3 signal! My projector has 3 aspect modes, Full, 16/9, and 4/3, as well as Auto. So when I'm using a GCHD, I can force 4/3. That same behavior will work on this adapter's output, but only in full processing mode. That retro mode seems broken for more than one reason. Let's say that for example you're watching 4:3 HD content, like some older cartoons on Amazon or Blu-Ray, the recent Batman remaster, or some Disney cartoons, whatever. The video output is still 1920x1080, 16/9, with a centered 1440x1080 4/3 image. English: The black bars are part of the image itself. 720x480 SD digital video should have an aspect flag. Should, lol. I know the GCHD gives you a fair bit of control for aspect settings. It's unfortunate that if those flags are properly set, that the mClassic is ignoring them, but like you said, the real crime is that it's not forcing the input to be recognized with non-square pixels in retro mode. Perhaps they wanted to focus on SD output, and not necessarily 4:3 output, and someone missed a memo. If it isn't doing any different processing, they'd be better served just making it an aspect ratio switch. And of course, on a lot of TVs you can still force 4:3 yourself, although you're doing that after it takes non-square pixels, makes them even wider, and then you manually squish them back down - it will only look as good as your TV's scaler.
@kamarrawlings62855 жыл бұрын

Tbh the aspect ratio issue is actually a better solution than outputting in true 4:3. All modern lcds have uniform pixel sizes. So when you're image contains non-square pixels you experience a shimmering effect as the pixels are expanded and contracted when they are in between the real pixels on the screen. What happens is one pixel gets displayed too wide and the next pixel gets displayed too narrow. Then if you move by one pixel the wide pixels become narrow and vice versa. A lot of people don't notice this at all, but the nes classic is famous for it. Check out some footage of zelda 2 for a prime example and watch how the roofs of the buildings appear to wobble or shimmer as you move left and right. Trust me once you do see it, you can't unsee it. This is the very reason the pixel perfect mode exists on the nes and snes classic. So the mClassic outputting the original square pixels is actually a good thing as it prevents that shimmering effect since the pixels are always able to line up with your real pixels on the display. And for some people that is a make or break feature. I've even heard reports of people experiencing headaches from the shimmer. So, in my opinion, I would rather play with square pixels even if it isn't the true retro aspect ratio to avoid this effect.

Just heard about this today when looking into options for tweaking the image quality on my Switch, Wii U, and Xbox! Thanks much for the awesome video.

Why is it so expensive though? There are no major differences, and I'm watching on a monitor screen.

I know it is not very new but could you do a video talking about the RetroTINK 2x? I am trying to find something that would work well for my set-up and am a little confused by this product

9:59 Yeah.. but even with the aspect ratio issue.. not all consoles output with the same resolution... Snes for example: outputs between 256x224 and 512x448 and the genesis: 320x224 pixels in NTSC region, in PAL regions it's 320×240... and then we haven't even discussed unoptimized PAL ports with borders..

I really don't get why you think it's blurry, for all the games shown to me it just looked the same or crisper

One thing I noticed in the mClassic footage: There's a 1-frame pause every second, which might be similar to the complaints Digital Foundry had with the original release of Mario Kart 8 on the WiiU. This introduces a noticable persistent stutter in the feed, which might be a big drawback for a device that was looking to be good...
@Nintendrew5 жыл бұрын
That was an issue with my capture device, not with the mClassic. I wasn't able to catch it until the video was out. Sorry about that!

This device is no "upscaling" squat, it is just applying an anti-aliasing filter.

This can help me out a ton. I have 14 system in my Old Steamer Trunk running all my consoles off and HDMI switcher or a Component switcher. Did you plug the mClassic to the back of the switchers then and HDMI to the tv? Or did you use a HDMI out of the back of the switcher and plug the mClassic into the tv. If you saw my last video you can see my Gaming Trunk and the issues I have with space.

Thanks for the review! I recently got the hyperkin cables to play wii and gamecube games from my wii based on your recommendation. Have you tested hyperkin in conjunction with the mclassic? What would you say is the optimal setup for gamecube and wii games off the Wii with the mclassic? Thanks in advance.
@jordanmillraney54812 жыл бұрын
For the Hyperkin, you’d need an HDMI coupler since the Hyperkin has a male HDMI output and the mClassic has a male HDMI input. For me, I used a Wii Component cable and a Component to HDMI converter which takes the analog component signal and transfers it to HDMI. Then, the mClassic is attached to it for 1080p upscaling, video smoothing, and color enhancement. This isn’t really necessary. Some people have it hooked up to Wii2HDMI adapters which is not ideal since they suffer problems overtime such as picture noise, no audio, wrong colors, etc.

I just got the 2 pack. I can't wait til they come in. Thanks Nintendrew for the heads up!

Is there any issue playing VC games on the Wii with the Wii set to 480p? Do they fill the screen properly or looked stretched? Or do they have he black side bars?

Did you test this through a Wii using the Hyperkin HDMI cable that you recommended a while back? Would be interested to find out this for the purpose of both GameCube and Wii games
@Ravenwritindesk5 жыл бұрын
I had the same question. Another youtuber said the hyperkin wasn't great because it added errors to the signal. But, he also said hyperkin was the best way to play wii and gamecube on hdtv... so... yeah. I too got the hyperkin based on the previous Nintendrew video, so I'd also like to know how that setup does.

Lee Newman Same here - bought it purely on Nintendrew’s recommendation - I still have t actually tested it yet though lol so haven’t seen for myself if it’s a good enough picture or would benefit further from this device

I've been playing wii and gamecube over hyperlink and can verify that the quality is pretty darn good. I will say sometimes I get a weird horizontal discoloration that will run down the screen. No idea what that's about, but it isn't super frequent.

Question regarding the mClassic: I have a bunch of consoles, so I use an HDMI switch to be able to have them all hooked-up since my TV normally wouldn't have enough ports. In connecting the mClassic, then, would I need one for each console and then plug them into the HDMI Switch, would I just need one and have that where the HDMI Switch meets the television, or would to do both by having an mClassic where the device meets the HDMI Switch and then also where the HDMI Switch meets the Television. Any help is greatly appreciated, as I'm looking into these and it will make a *huge* difference in the cost of upgrading my setups.

I mainly only noticed the difference with games that ran at 720p as 1080p is what my 4K TV only supports right next to 2160p :(

Great video. With the Wii, are you using the GCvideo internal HDMI mod? (Wii dual)
