Hello Gary, I was looking for a versatile way that allows me to: - Audio interview with one or more participants (I used a lavelier mic + adapter instead) - Improve my audio recordings for online teaching (USB connection to my PC) - Improve my DSLR camera audio, while interviewing one or more people (I use a camera mount) And with some tweaking this set-up is relatively low cost for great quality! I watched soooooo many video's to figure out what equipment to buy and how to reconfigure for compatibility. Yours was (by far) the clearest and most straight forward explanation. Thanks a lot Gary! Zoom H5 should sponsor you. Kind regards, Annelies

This is where I get into big arguments with audio/sounds guys on movie sets. I for one, don't see the point in doing sync sound anymore. I've done something similar to this but with the nux b-3 wireless system. I connect my sennheiser mic wirelessly through that system with a saramonic preamp in between it to make the quality better. I did test this set up in the video too and it works quite well, it has the added benefit of being able to record your audio twice, once on the zoom, and once on the camera at the exact same time, so that way, if one gets lost, you have a backup file either way. So in total, I now have a wireless boom set up for film projects and the audio sounds great.

@GaryDmedia3 жыл бұрын
Yousef, most professional outfits agree that separation of audio and video recording during production gives a better result. Dedicated audio recorders are able to capture much better quality recordings. That said, in practice, most KZbin creators try to minimise the post processing of audio. I definitely would try to improve camera audio first. I do all my recording on my own without any other helpers.

Wonderful video! Thanks
@GaryDmedia4 жыл бұрын
1. You don’t need to use the X/Y mics unless they are being recorded to separate tracks. Where you can, turn off any inputs you are not using. 2. You do still need to adjust the output of the Zoom recorder and the input of the camera. Set the input gain of your camera to low. Maybe one or two bars (not sure how it appears on your camera.) ten increase the output of the zoom recorder starting from low. This of course is taking for granted you have setup you gain settings for your chosen microphone. Hope this helps a bit.

Amazing video! Clear and calm explainations. I want to use a Tascam DR-07 MKII PCM Recorder as an external mic on my Panasonic Lumix FZ150. Here and there I've read things about an attenuator cable instead of a simple mini jack cable (the latter seems to cause a higher input on the camera). I can change the input level on the Tascam so a simple mini jack cable should be sufficent, right?
@GaryDmedia4 жыл бұрын
The input in your camera is designed for a microphone. Some inputs are very sensitive and do need an attenuated cable. The recorder may not be able to match the camera input even when you lower the gain. You will know once you make a recording and carefully listen to it with headphones. Hope that helps.
@Calvarydima3 жыл бұрын
Does it have to attenuator cable ? Since output is headphones line but camera input is for mics

Definitely Paris, the recorder will be a superior recording. Channeling the audio to the camera simplifies the post production process if you don’t want to sync audio. Quite surprised you're setting up both H5 and camera to peak at around -12dB. Isn't the ideal to peak at around 0dB, so you don't have to normalise the sound in post production, potentially raising the noise floor in the process? Thanks for a very clear tutorial.
@GaryDmedia5 жыл бұрын
Good observation Simon. Analogue audio equipment is a lot more forgiving when it comes to absorbing any peak levels that exceed 0dB. Digital equipment tends to distort just over 0dB. Subsequently this is why a buffer is often setup. If you are sure that the levels will never exceed 0dB you could confidently go closer but in practice it doesn’t seem to work out in the field. Hope that explains a little better why in practice I use the suggested -12dB as the marker.

Hi Gary, I have a Zoom H4n Pro. I have seen other video tutorials saying a Sescom cable is needed and to change the audio recording levels on the camera to manual and set it to the lowest possible setting, one-click up from the no audio recording setting. I notice you are not using a Sescom cable or the manual setting to the lowest possible setting on the camera. I am using a Canon 5D Mark IV. Is the Sescom cable not needed on the Zoom H5 or that method of lowest audio recording setting on manual?
@GaryDmedia5 жыл бұрын
Most recorders Craig will give you the option of adjusting the output of the monitor output. Some recorders may only have a high output headphone socket. This unit may need a special cable to reduce the gain so the camera is not overdriven. To answer your question straight, no you don’t need a special cable if you can adjust the monitor output of the recorder.

Thanks Gary. Can you skip connecting the Zoom to the camera and use the SD card from the Zoom to sync to video?
@GaryDmedia6 жыл бұрын
Yes definitely. It does add another task and many like to simplify their work flow. Just so long as you use a clap board or marker to assist syncing. Thanks for asking the question.

Hello Gary.. thanks for this good video. I connect to my H5 an audio technica at20 mic and a Samson 2qu Mic. when I connect to my panasonic lumix G7, I got a noise hiss in my video file. At the same time I record on the H5 and the audio files are just perfect. But what is the point if any way I will have to synch between the audio of my h5 with the video file? .. I tried switching trs cables. For instance I use the original cable that has my lavalier and the hiss noise persist.. Do you thing the issue is in the trs cable or in the mics?.. thanks for your answer
@GaryDmedia3 ай бұрын
It sound to me like you may have the output from the H5 quite low and you have the camera audio input level very high to get some sound. Camera inputs are very noisy when you turn them up. Increase the H5 output, lower the camera input. Not sure, if you already have tried that sorry.

Gary I was wondering, I have the Sony a7iii can I do this too? Also is there an unlimited voice recording dependent on the cameras SD card or the memory from the zoom h5?
@GaryDmedia3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can but your camera may have a more sensitive audio input. You may need an attenuated cable instead of a standard one. Try it first with a standard mini jack cable. Limit to voice recording- The H5 in this case is only used as an audio interface so depends on battery life only. You camera may have a 30min file length.

Very helpful. Could the Zoom also record, serving as a backup audio file? Why do this instead of recording audio separately and then syncing? Is it to avoid that step (understandable!)? Are there other factors that influence your decision to record to camera or separately?
@GaryDmedia3 жыл бұрын
Yes definitely able to record simultaneously in the H5. The recording on the H5 will be superior. The illustrated method just eliminates the extra sync step.

Hi will zoom H5 pick more noise outdoor than shotgun, I am looking for short film voice dub. is it omni directional ? or has a setting to do it
@GaryDmedia4 жыл бұрын
The standard stereo mic set that comes with the H5 will pick up fairly wide sound. Not real good rear sound reduction. A true shotgun mic plugged into the H5 would do the job.

@@GaryDmedia thanks, silly question so why would I need zoom, cant I use shotgun directly ? does it cut noise outdoor ? or preamp ? dose it really worth or rode mic will be sufficient ? also what about if its indoor ?

A Rode shotgun mic like a Rode VideoMic Pro or similarity is a good option. This video is focused on those that want to connect professional mics to a camera. Hope that helps.

@GaryDmedia3 жыл бұрын
Yes Laura, you can but it would be a lot safer if you used an attenuated cable if you can get one: geni.us/MOVO_MV-RC100 If not just use a standard cable and make sure the output from the Tascam is set quite low. Hope that helps.

Hi Gary, what mics is recommended in recording sounds from HiFi speakers like Sigma Acoustics?
@GaryDmedia3 жыл бұрын
A cardioid pattern microphone is best. One thing you will have to be careful of is how loud the speaker is. Some mics are designed to cope better with high output sounds. The Rode M1 or the M3 if you need to have some adjustment on reducing the sensitivity of the mic. Hope that gives you a start.

Quick question, how to fix KZbin mono phase issue from XLR input with XY mics? Specifically, on a phone the audio is garbled squelch noise...but on another computer or with headphones it works fine. I used an attenuated cord from my H5 to Sony RX 102.

Thanks
@GaryDmedia4 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry I don’t understand your question David. One thing to check on the H5 is that everything is reset to the default settings. That is factory settings. Just in case something silly has been adjusted wrong.

@@GaryDmedia the output from H5 is out of phase only on mono speaker phone from on KZbin when XLR is included. I'm using attenuated stereo wire should it be mono?
@GaryDmedia4 жыл бұрын
David my understanding is yes. Recording directly to the phone via an attenuated lead goes into the headset input if the phone. This is a mono. Even though the H5 is outputting stereo, the signals are blended together in the lead to go into a single mono channel on the phone. I don't know if any phone that has a stereo mic input.

Can you use this setup for live streaming?
@caseymacgill34284 жыл бұрын
As a follow up question I wonder whether there are any audio latency issues with this set up and what can be done to improve latency while live streaming.
@GaryDmedia4 жыл бұрын
Casey, this setup does not really suit live streaming unless you have a HDMI to USB converter or AV mixer. Latency is not an issue using the H5 as a preamp because the camera is getting a direct and not a processed audio signal.

I never did that... What about sync? Is the audio put later or always in sync on the camera? Why not record the video. And the audio on the zoom and put them together in the video program on the computer? I use Shotcut. But first record with five audio channels on three machines. Edit the audio before I start editing the video.

Awesome if you can simply record on the Zoom recorder and then sync your audio tracks in post processing. This video was mainly created to show how to use the zoom recorder to connect professional mics to a DSLR.

Can you use the line out to the 3.5mm input of an ipad? Plus can you also use both of the input and the stereo mic of the zoom h5 giving a total of 3 or 4 mic?

Jean, with an appropriate cable that is attenuated you can connect to the headset 3.5mm jack. The iPhone headset is only mono input. Yes you can channel all the H5 inputs out through the line out on the H5 but it would all be mono.

You are a legend, great video and content Gary. I've just started using my H5 zoom as an input for my Cannon 70D. At the moment I am using the standard XYH-5 Shock Mounted Stereo Microphone Capsule. I found the recording I did picked up a lot of white noise in what was a very stable and quite environment. Perhaps I didn't set the levels on the camera high enough and it over compensated. Will do a few more tests. Anyway, thanks for the great video, liked and subscribed !!
