I've never worked out why camera companies don't just use a decent pre-amp in their cameras so we don't have to jump through all these hoops - drives me mad. Canon manage it in the Cinema range so it can be done and I don't think anyone would mind if the camera cost $50 more and gave you great audio out of the box. But thank you for taking the time to comment, I appreciate it.

My Panasonic lumix s5 ii can be set as line level input as well as mic level. Will line level use the camera op amps? Am I best connecting the zoom h6 with line level in or using mic level as low as possible, thanks
@CourseBuildersAcademy3 ай бұрын
I would try using the line level in the H6 and starting with the most amount of padding ( lowest audio level ) and then adjusting up to suit, I would rather have the H6 doing the work than the camera
@MrPaulGale3 ай бұрын
@@CourseBuildersAcademyI’ve been having a play. I think you avoid the inbuilt mic op amps of the dslr if you use line in. By adjusting the sensitivity of both to roughly match, I can control the gain purely from the wheel on the H6. Sounds good and simpler than using mic input at low sensitivity. The is my experience so far anyway.

Mitchell, I assume you mean you want to get the mic connected to your H6 into your iPhone. I did a video that kinda covers this but using a Focusrite and not a H6, but there is no reason you couldn't do it with an H6 instead ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGLRenidetqjodk ) alternately, you could just plug a 3.5mm audio cable from the headphone out port on the H6 to the lighting port on your iPhone using a 3.5mm to lighting port adaptor and that should also work.

You can achieve the same results with a $19.95 Line-in to Microphone Attenuator cable, why buying a $350 audio recorder unless you want to use it for its intended use?
@CourseBuildersAcademy2 жыл бұрын
The point of the lesson is to demonstrate how to get much better audio quality by not having the Pre-amps in the camera boost the signal and how to connect an XLR mic to a consumer-level camera using a simple 3.5mm cable. Pre-amps in a lot of consumer-level cameras add far to much hiss and noise to the track, running through a device, by going through something like the H6 means the pre-amps in the cameras can be turned right down resulting in a cleaner and hiss free audio track. The attenuating level part of the lesson is nothing more than an "oh you can also do this", it's not the focus of the lesson.

At 6:42, it does matter which camera you're using. Fujifilm cameras allow you to select mic level and line level for your microphone port. I select line level and send line level audio to it and the audio baked into the video is fantastic coming in from my Zoom H6, Tascam 70D and Mixcast 4. This totally bypasses the cheap mic preamp of the camera. Sony cameras can't do this and I'm not sure about Panasonic, Nikon and Canon. Consider remaking this video to address this value added feature of the Fuji cameras.
@CourseBuildersAcademy8 ай бұрын
Yes some camera's can. My GH5s for example will allow me to use line level, the GH5 won't. I try to make videos for the biggest audience and the common obstacles they face. I own many cameras including some very high-end professional Cine cameras and to cover all the possible permutations on camera I actually own would not really be possible, let alone going buying even more cameras, but I do like buying cameras. But, thank you for bringing this to my attention and it may benefit others reading the post. When I redo this video I may mention that some cameras have line level and explain what it means, if I can do so in a non confusing way

@CourseBuildersAcademy2 жыл бұрын
Yes, ideally the best way is to capture the audio in the H6 and not pass it through the pre-amps in the camera at all. But, this means you have to then mess about syncing the audio and video in post, and when you consider that most people are listening on computer speakers or on a mobile device the increased workflow would go mostly unnoticed, like you say most people would be happy with the results - it's about balancing workflow and quality I guess.
@mikezingone94712 жыл бұрын

@@mikezingone9471 Well a couple of things that may help ( I actually do often record directly in the H6 and sync with camera in post ) Clap your hands at the start of each session, you can marry up the sound of the clap and the visual of your hands coming together. If you have Premiere Pro you can record in say the H6 and also use the built in audio on your camera as scratch audio, Premiere has a feature where it will sync the H6 Audio track perfectly to the scratch audio ( you then just delete the scratch track ) and you have audio that is perfect. Make sure your mic is working, check the level meter as you're talking. So this device is a recorder but you can bypass the recorder and pass the boosted preamp signal to the camera and the camera actually does the recording? Important question, is the recording component in this device superior to the average recording component inside a camera? We’ve heard many times the onboard preamps on cameras aren’t that great compared to preamps on devices like this. Which recorder is better?
