Connemara's Lost Railway - An Aeriel View of what remains of the Galway - Clifden Railway in 4K

The Galway - Clifden Railway had a relatively short 40-year life and I will be covering the story of it's relatively short life and demise in a future video. For now I want to share some aeriel views of the line as it is today and the magnificent terrain it passes through. From seeing this footage you can hopefully get to appreciate the terrible loss of not having this railway line today on multiple fronts.
A project to revive Maam Cross Station and the adjacent segment of the old line is underway by a team of hard working volunteers. Full details of their work and progress is captured in the links below as well as a GoFundMe link where any contributions would be most welcome to help the team progress the project.
I hope to do a video on the fantastic work the Maam Cross team are doing in the next couple of months and track their progress going forward.
I'm really looking forward to travelling the line (at least some small part of it) in the near future.

As a Galway man, who has dived head first into trains this year... thank you! I have been buying old books to try to find out more about the Clifden line, even so, there is very little information on the line... I would love to see it reintroduced! Fantastic video! Great pictures from Woodquay as well, many fond memories down there, great to see it in all its glory!

Been said my whole life that there isn't much hope of reopening stuff over the in the west because it didn't have the tourist traffic of say Dublin, Cork etc. But you build it and they'll come. It's beautiful out west even if the weather can get a bit harsh (understatment maybe😅)

Some years ago I stayed at the Ben Lettery youth hostel, when I left to walk to Clifden the hostel warden gave me instructions to walk along the old railway track bed through the Roundstone bog. What an experience . Such memories .

Part of the line from Recess to Ballynahinch and on to Clifden is part of the Western Greenway now.

Interesting film. Visited Galway via Dublin by train a few years ago and had the feeling that the station was bigger than the lines there seemed to justify - now I know my hunch was right! Hope the restoration and new lines goes well.

The combination of economics, politics and timing couldn't have been worse at the time it closed. It would be very different today and a quite amazing train ride. Would need a billionaire benefactor at this stage apart from the good work being done around Maam Cross station.

Is there any news on the works being done on the Connemara Greenway at Recess? I was walking on a partially finished new section of greenway on the approach into Recess, and while there is JCB’s and construction actively happening at the site, I cannot find any information about it online? Do you happen to know what the story is with work progression on the Greenway in 2024?

For those interested Oakwood Press published “Rails Through Connemara” last year - all about this line.ISBN. 978 0 85361 759 4 I have been from Galway to Clifden a couple of times. The Pub at Clifden is worth a visit in the old station building. The engine shed is still there too.
