The "issue" of the comparison with Dark Souls is that From games are, well, Action RPGs, with the Action part being the main one. You can clear the game with a naked dude and a broken sword if you so choose. F&H doesn't work like that. The map and loot are randomly generated, the only things you can surely have on your side when starting a run is 1) Your character starting skills 2) The layout of the dungeon having a certain basic structure that is always respected. The actual "expertise" lies in the knowledge of the mechanics of the game, but it's never a 100% sure bet. You can study your run perfectly but get shitty luck with loot and be at deep areas with little food and sanity recovery items, so you can end up "softlocked" if you can't get to the end fast enough or loot more. Dark Souls is a game you master, F&H is a game you learn to manipulate and run along with. With the added help of Save Scumming. It's basically an intended mechanic of the game.

I think a big theme in Fear & Hunger is “how far are you willing to go to achieve your goals? What are you willing to give up to get what you want?” Whether that’s in-game of your character giving their flesh or their life, or you the player giving your time and effort, the game asks you that. And you have to decide which path is worth the risk and what morality means, how far is too far? What’s interesting is beyond endings A, B, C, D, and E there are S-endings that are specific to each character and only achieveable in the harder game difficulty. The lore is quite complex, it’s a fascinating rabbit hole.

The setting he described really reminds me of Black Souls games by "Eeny, meeny, miny, moe?". Everything is grotesque, it's a twisted mix of various fairy tales. The game is not hard, but you play it normally and find a pool of blood on the ground, nothing special, tons of those around. Turns out it was a character you could save and recruit, but you need to defeat rats first. So you play again, kill rats right away, come there and find a girl... and she's just a merchant, nothing special. Because this time you defeated rats too early, and the thing that would motivate her to join you didn't happen. Then, many runs later, you manage to save all the characters... and they just die in the epilogue anyway. Turns out you still have something you need to do, and it involves NOT saving a bunch of characters, but this time on purpose. It's an eroge though, even though that part is completely irrelevant and can be turned off, so streamers don't play it.

Oh, and the bonus dungeon. A rematch against Helkaiser was so badass. "See you in hell, my nemesis". It was such a smart and meta game too. The game does hint how to use the empty scroll. In the library, there is a book that always spawns that reads O LORD TEACH HURTING. With some trial and error, you can connect the dots with the scroll and the book.

7:27 Hahaha I was explaining this game to my boyfriend and he said exactly the same thing. Though he is a sweetheart - I would talk to him almost every day about this game and he unprompted bought me second game (Termina). To anyone wanting to try it out - try the second game first. Its less buggy and I think its more beginner friendly (for example saves arent cointosses so you get to explore more).

My friend gifted me the game so I was able to play it for the first time yesterday and as someone who loves the Soulsborne series and has no problem with dying over and over, I’m already in so much love with playing. I’ve watched many videos about it, but holy hell the game is so challenging and fun. My only issue is that the game froze several times so I had to restart. I believe I was able to fix it though, so my problems should be gone entirely

Much more punishing than DS, imo, because of the chance based combat and coin toss. Fully mastering the game, though, makes it like a walk on the park, especially if you know all the placements of the guaranteed items(because almost all items have randomized placements).

Connor isn't wrong. Mechanically the game is pretty easy for turn base standards. The only thing artificially hard is the game screwing you over with RNG kicking your sack. Darkest dungeon 1 and this game had similar ideas for combat but DD is a harder mechanically.

Some of the mechanics are very obscure but there is a hint specific to the scroll. When you find a place where a scroll is guaranteed you get a book that you can read that has the tree verses that if you type into the scroll you get a free save.

Ok, in defence of the Lucky coin mechanic not being explained, the game didn't had this in the beginning but after the sequel came in and had this new mechanic properly explained, and everyone liked that mechanic so much that the programmer added it to the first game with a few places where you could guaranteed get them... And since even this game had such a spaghetti code that you can get infinite of these in one chest if you don't grab a certain coin in a certain variation of the map, so I don't want to imagine what could have happened if he tried to make an actual tutorial about it.
