I am an artist, but now I am retired. I built my art career on stuff I found in other people's trash. I made my sculptures from found junk, reassembled into "art". I did it in college and grad. school, and the rest of my life until I turned 70. I exhibited my art and sold it in art galleries. I won arts grants from my art, most of it was from reassembled junk found in the trash. I didn't make a living from it, I found employment in "the Arts". I worked in art galleries, retail display companies, art supply stores and as a picture framer. If another artist needed an assistant, there was money to be made. I built art studios, for an art organization. My actual art, won me a 3 year arts scholarship, that paid for all my classes, and most of my supplies.

And a storage unit costs about $60 a month, has electric, no cost for mileage or gas and no possibilities of being liable for any type of damage caused by you or anyone else. I guess I got the 74 like! 😁 But true story about checking out dumpsters they do sometimes have unopened products or even food and beverages. Also just because the food and beverages have an expiration date on it doesn't make it not safe to consume after the said date on the packaging. I grew up mostly in poverty so whatever we had to eat was it. But to cut it short anyone can find gems in the dumpster.

It helps if you live near a large college campus. I have always lived within the shadow of a large university. The "kids" throw out so many perfectly good items. Sometimes their discards are brand new and clean. I have found real leather jackets, tons of nice shirts, cool hats. My best find was a one year old, computer stereo system, with a bass box. I use it with my computer, presently and it retailed at Micro Center, for $120.00. I found kitchen cutlery,....(knives, forks, & spoons,.....brand new, and I use them every day.) I have furniture, chairs, lamps, and wall art all clean and ready to enjoy. I'm old,....I'm 70. I did most of my trash can diving in my 30s through my 60s. Now I have to pass on doing that, even though I see amazing, stuff. I found a 1930s, Art Deco desk, that I still use. A 1900s, solid oak desk, I restored, and still use. Most of my causal kitchen chairs are from the 1950s, all collectible (now), that I use in my house every day, that I found in the trash, in the 1980s. I found an all intact, marching band uniform, from the 1960s. It was a custom made jacket with built in shoulder pads, and lots of gold trim. I sold it to a nice (2nd time around clothing store) for $40.00.
