The video for Phil Lynott’s ‘Old Town’ is synonymous with Dublin in the early 1980s.
In 1982 Phil Lynott, Thin Lizzy frontman, released his second solo album ‘The Philip Lynott Album’. From this album came the single ‘Old Town’ and the music video depicting Lynott at various locations around Dublin city. From the Ha’penny Bridge to a stroll down Grafton Street and a pint in The Long Hall pub on South Great George’s Street and ending at the Ringsend Pier. The song was co-written by Lynott and Scottish musician Jimmy Bain.
In the days before music videos were commonplace, the video for ‘Old Town’ was produced by Dave Heffernan for RTÉ programme ‘Anything Goes’. The video was directed by Gerry Greg and was first broadcast on ‘Anything Goes’ on 30 October 1982.
‘Anything Goes’ was a young people’s programme on RTÉ Television. The programme was first broadcast on 4 October 1980 and continued for 6 years. The programme was produced and directed by Bob Collins.

He spent sometime looking for his dad In London. When he came back to make this video with gerry gregg. Philo was lost to drugs and he told everyone that once the video shoot was done. He wouldn't be coming back.

A beautiful man with great talent destroyed by drugs. Call a spade a spade he didn't die. He overdosed on filthy people killing drugs. He was a first class talent. Had it all at his feet. I love his songs. R.I.P. Phil Lynott , we still have your wonderful songs.

Remember going to a club in around Wolfe Tone Street and Phil was singing..All I remember was the loudness, the heat & the sweat..He was with a group called Skid Row at the time.. There's a beautiful song written by Adrian Mannering up on YT in honour of Phil called On Leighlin Road..P.S I think the name of the place was called The Countdown Club.

In the background to this wonderful song is the river Liffey of the 70s. The two grey ships in the background - one is the Granuaille and her sister. What is her name. See Phil in the little orange boat. There were no bridges that far east on the river. The Corpo. ran "bus" services across the river. You had to climb a lot of steps into and out of them. Dublin in the rare old times. What is that ships name ???

I fully blame Phil Lynott Thin Lizzy and Rory Gallagher for leading me and my 6 brothers astray from an early age, we spent all of our money going to gigs and concerts to watch the greatest rock bands of all time, we picked up all our bad habits from Phil and the Lizzy boys also Rory, we never regretted those happenings for a moment of the most brilliant fun we hand, the music we heard and saw played live on stage by those boys was the very best. I still miss Phil & Rory and I always will

Saw him in a crowded pub in north west London months before he passed away. He was leaning against the fire door and looked forlorn - little did I know he would shortly no longer be in the land of the living - His presence went unnoticed but it was my sharp eyed friend who spotted him. All very sad really.

Gerry gregg said that they before the trumpet bit in Herbert Park. Philo was under the weather. And gerry gregg his older friend from skid rows was not. Philo was told and he did not clean up his act they would have shelve the video. So the next day a sobered up Philo appeared and the video was completed. When gerry gregg saw the video he knew it was going to be the last time he saw. He appeared on a tg4 documentary about the making of old town and he said that could look at the video for a long time. It made him emotional.

The Dublin charm of this video is ruined when you hear that the album recording opens with a Cockney voice saying "Covent Garden isn't what it used to be". Wrong town. But...charm this has. He's walking up Grafton Street in the video and the statue of him now is just off that. Can't swear if the bar scene was shot in McDaid's, the pub opposite the statue, but quite possibly. I love that trumpet.
