Her voice sounds like an animated child's voice, like you'd hear on a cartoon. She was a devoted mother central to her children's upbringing. Her strong faith got her through. Her subservience though is somewhat baffling, the stance her husband could did no wrong. Denial. Isn't it human nature to challenge things? It's like she went along with whatever happened.

She said every time he came to California to be with Gloria Swanson he’d come home with an expensive piece of jewelry for her. It’s the same code he expected the daughters in law, keep your mouths shut, don’t complain about the other women and I’ll pay you generously. Too bad Joan, Teddy’s wife couldn’t abide by the rules, gave birth as required, but drank. She finally dried out, divorced teddy and hopefully had a good life.

She was a full of **** social climbing Vatican kook. I still feel sorry though for any mother that loses her children because of murder or disease. Yet she and her pro-Hitler husband Joseph were shallow enough to put their daughter, Rosemary, away and have her given a lobotomy. These people were shallow, cold as ice and crooked as a corkscrew. Many people that were famous in the 1930s supported the The Nazi Party officially the National Socialist German Workers' Party (German: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei or NSDAP). But when the Germans tried to reclaim their lost lands from their empire and then some, people had to choose a side. Joseph Jr. died from a military accident near Blythburgh, Suffolk, England.

@@char7945Rose was the epitome of a staunch, devout Catholic. It was a different time back then. However, I cannot imagine refusing to attend my daughter's funeral. I believe the way in which Rose comforted herself is by declaring that Kathleen had died "in a state of grace." Even Eunice was telling some white lies in this interview. I was surprised when she said she quizzed her mother about her autobiography and the fact that Rose didn't mention one disagreement or argument throughout the book. When the interviewer asked Rose about it, Rose firmly denied ever having any arguments or disagreements with her husband. That is probably how she survived all the tragedies. Denial.

( 29 May, 1917) We too had a large family, but had tragedy after tragedy with my brother Liam first to go, at 20, drowned on a fishing trip in a massive gale. My mother the next year, at 44, cancer, and on and on it went. We are now decimated. Rose is so strong and inspiring, we didn’t have anyone like that to pull us through. 😔

Regrettably you are largely correct here. The disowning of Patricia over her marrying outside the church was cruel and bigoted. The whole family went along with that. The medical meddling that destroyed the life of Rosemary was awful, but also the norm for the time. Overall, the family of Rose and Joseph was the quintessential hard-hearted emotionally destitute rich family.

Uhhhhhhhh when she lost her daughter Kit, she said it was an act of God because she married or wanted to marry a divorced man. She was flying to their home with the guy to introduce him to Joe, who was goi g to give his blessing. Rose was out of her mind over it and thought it was preferable that Kit DIE as opposed to her marrying this guy and “ruining the family name” or “offending god”. Jesus Christ lady

Yes. She spoke of the family’s dinner conversations. I wondered how many times her husband was home for dinner. I’d have had knots in my stomach with a table full of kids and my husband out drinking and spending the evening in the arms of another woman. I’d doubt I’d have the strength to guide polite discourse of history, politics, and everyone’s developing views. I’m imagining chaos.

No, her children wernt perfect, but whose are? She instilled a love of history in them, and tried to give them the level of faith she had.
