Going the wrong way or getting in the wrong lane is inevitable when you don't know the area. Watch how I deal with navigating large complex junctions using only signs and road markings without a sat nav. See how I choose the lane I need and how I deal with being in the wrong lane.

I like to go around complicated junctions with Streetview before driving them, but still so easy to get in the wrong place with the awful markings that we've got around here. Love the figaro, can't say I'd want to drive one on the motorway though :P

It's better than cycling in unfamiliar places. Adding a few miles to a journey because of a wrong turn doesn't hurt much in a car, but it does when you're pedalling.

@Johann Schmidt it is ok though because you can do uturns wherever your little heart wants to however you cannot! and i can't stress this enough... YOU CAN'T!!! uturn your vehicle of choice anywhere you want! as there are RESTRICTIONS. sometimes it is illegal to u turn and you have to drive many a mile to turn around. with fuel. at 180.9 great british pence per litre! this is ghastly! while cycling you can turn around wherever you want and you do not need to worry about fuel prices! the economy doesn't affect you! plus cyclists always annoy me when I'm driving because they take up too much of the road. please be respectful to drivers like us when we are paying 180.9 pennys per litre of gasoline! it is hurting my soul deeply. Although, a little bird has told me 🐦 that fuel prices are coming down! when I went to walk whippet i saw 169.9 Great British Pence advertised outside the local Sainsburys! Fair play to them!! Long live the burys and please be respectful to us vehicle owners who cannot uturn wherever our heart desires like you cyclists! 173.7p at my local asda.

I have to say the road signs and marking are terrible in UK, which makes driving unnecessarily difficult. When you see the signs and matkings you have about 2 seconds to react or change lane. They should be big, over your head, and early.

Finally, I have heard you say what worries me most, which is that the signs on the roads come late and are too close to when drivers need to make decisions. I believe without a sat nav, most drivers will go the wrong way several times before correcting themselves on a new road.

From watching videos, I'd agree that signage in the UK is often inadequate. Overhead signs well ahead of the intersections would be extremely helpful.

Last month drove the M25, got to the roundabout at 4:40, road markings were faded even more than this video so couldn't tell which lane until it was far too late due to traffic on both sides. Ended up in Heathrow. I think a lot of these roadsigns assume lower speeds with minimal traffic

As a person from a country with (usually) single-lane roundabouts where you just indicate when you exit, the layout of UK roundabouts is so baffling to me. I understand why so many people struggle with it. I'm not even sure I'd manage myself as someone with ample driving experience... Amazing video once again, Rich! Hope to see that car you're driving in back on the channel :)

Another top video. I think it would be a good idea to make a video just on the roundabouts of Colchester and how they should be driven, lane management etc. As you well know Colchester seems to have more than its fair share of unusual roundabouts often which you need to treat differently from the rules of driving standard roundabouts. IE filter lanes, give way lines on the roundabout, multiple roundabouts, ones where it is normal to drive on the outside lane past 2 exits and past the 12 o'clock rule before taking the 3rd exit etc. I find it quite difficult trying to explain to my daughter (who has had around 40 hours of professional instruction) that "this is the rules to approach and use a roundabout" to then go out and say this roundabout and that roundabout have different rules and don't do what i told you earlier! Keep up the good work👍

When I passed my test, the only thing available were road atlases, A to Zs, road route planner signs and a good sense of geography - of course there was, the ever unreliable, asking someone directions. I remember, the day after I got my first car, asking my other-half to direct me home from Chester to Manchester using the A Roads only from the atlas, as the car had a developed a fault and I didn't want to break down on the motorway. So far, so good; until I started looking at the signs and realising something wasn't right...yes, I had been directed via Liverpool and the Mersey Tunnels! My road route planner sign reading and geography went on an intensive training course directly after. I have a sat-nav now, but frequently like to test myself by leaving the sat-nav alone and using signage by itself to get to my destination. Plus, it's good practice for when you haven't a sat-nav available, it looses signal or goes faulty.

It seems to happen more often when I'm cycling than driving, but sometimes the satnav will try and send you down one way roads, or turn right when it's not permitted, you always need to be paying attention to road signs and markings and not just rely on a sat nav that may be out of date, or not working properly!

I just passed my test 2 weeks ago and I've started doing motorway driving - I'm so glad it's normal to be confused about lanes and whether you're coming into a sliproad that ends, a lane that just stays there, where the hell you're meant to go on a roundabout getting onto a motorway, etc. Your videos are so helpful!!!! This has been really throwing me and I didn't even realise until recently that you should change lanes on some islands?? I always thought the island just spirals you around? i.e. the approach will say something like "right lane for M4/5/whatever" - then once you're on the roundabout, you have to switch lanes mid-way around. I don't understand it! Have I got this right or am I actually confused?

Hi,thank you for your good video ,for learner problem is,they're feel that reading road signs for direction while the car is moving is too fast for them to understand. What should we do?

Hi great video, I'd love to see a video about filling up at a petrol pump ie, when is the best time to fill up, how do you know when the tank is full, what fule is best for the engine in the car, is there any petrol etiquette that someone who has never done it before might not know, thanks

interesting video. I've always suspected that 'local knowledge' is a super important reason why ppl pass or fail the driving test! I'm convinced that lots of good drivers would fail the test if they had to take it at a random test centre they'd never been too. Where I live, there's so many roundabouts and stuff that are either not marked (despite having unusual rules like needing to be in the right lane to go straight over) OR, there are road marking, but they are so late that it would be dangerous to wait until you see them to get in the correct lane and have to try to change lane when you are about 2 feet from entering the roundabout! lol I'm sure i'd have passed my test easily if only I had a good memory and good 'bearings' so i'd remember the particular rules and roads i'm on, but i've been cursed with an awful memory and so on tests, it often feels like i'm on a road for the first time lol

Beautiful little car, reminds me a bit of the Renault Dauphine. Here's a tip: if you're driving a vehicle with a speedo marked in kph only, make up an aide-memoire using any of the online calculators and fix it with something removeable so you can see it. You'll probably only need it for a week or two as the conversions will enter your brain and become second nature! If any doubt, you can work it from 2 figures, 100kph = 62mph and 80kph = 50 mph eg 1/2 of 100 is 50 so 50kph = 31 mph, therefore 30mph is about 48 kph

If that happens pull the gear stick (manual) or drive selector (auto) to neutral and use the handbrake to stop the car. But probably best to try and relax and accept life has risks, sounds like you're trying to control every eventuality.
