Sadly very few people take any further course or information after passing their test. Driving is a skill and its only the basics that are taught to get you through the test albeit essential skills. many driver assume that's it, I'm a Fernando Alonso and I'm great driver. This is so far from reality its scary. There are a number of course you can do to improve and even become an ADI. i personally have a number of driving quals and have driven commercially in other parts of the world having to do that countries test in large vehicles. It only makes you better. Well done you

2:45 across Europe you will encounter roundabouts like this except you enter from one lane and you exit into one lane, but the roundabout itself has two lanes. If you're going straight / 2nd exit, you should: - If clear, enter the innermost lane, otherwise enter outermost lane - Switch lanes when you've passed the last exit before yours - Signal and exit from outermost lane This allows for spiralwise movement on the roundabout, which is safer - it avoids failure to yield conflicts on entry, as vehicles entering the roundabout always enter from behind you. Turbo roundabouts force this movement by means of road markings and raised medians and lane separators.

My instructor was in the car during the test and after, he said that it was a good drive and he didn't think I did anything dangerous, but I still failed. He said that the examiner was a bit too harsh.

No1 Observation at junctions..as you say Richard, it's often used for misjudgment of speed, or a vehicle approaching in the Rh lane of roundabout and pupils think it's ok to go because they are entering left lane on roundabout. Without the instructor observing, a pupil will think they have failed for not seeing approaching vehicle, as opposed to a misjudgment....needs rewording in my opinion. Cheers Richard, very concise video.👍

Good overview. I'd also add to "mirrors / change direction" that it has come up for me over poor lane discipline earlier on in roundabouts (often spiral roundabouts) where a candidate drifts across lanes or gets into the wrong lane and then cuts across another lane either unsafely or without checking in order to continue going around to a later exit.

I could be wrong but I reckon ‘use of speed’ and more learners speeding is down to the new 20mph default speed limit in urban areas in Wales. Actually I’m seeing more 20mph speed limits in sections of urban roads in England too. It is very hard to judge 20mph compared to 30mph, especially for a learner.

I made a website showing the fault statistics for each test centre. The top 10 list really varies quite a bit by location. I reckon the increase in speeding faults is due to the increasing number of 20 mph zones, particularly in London. Other road users will overtake learners going 20 on a wide 20 mph road, adding extra pressure to speed up.

Am I right in thinking you can fail for going too slow? Say you are on a national speed limit road or 50mph or 40mph you should be showing the examiner you are confident going at those speeds? And you should be getting up to and within reaching those speeds? E.g National Speed limit - should be reaching at least 55mph on the speedometer 40mph - 35 50- 45mph etc etc.

Yes, but examiners (especially on an L test) have some tolerance for candidates being a bit cautious. If you're not making decent progress on safe roads, it's frustrating for other drivers and could encourage unsafe overtaking, and the examiner will pin those bad overtakes down to the candidate's inability to get up to speed.

I’ve been driving 25 years and always thought I should never enter a box junction unless I can proceed through without stopping. The rule as you explain it makes sense, and also explains why I got pipped at a really busy box junction in London that I wouldn’t enter due to oncoming traffic. My only reservation is if the target road on the right is clear, you enter the box and some oncoming traffic takes a left and fills that target road. You’d be left stranded in the box.

Hi Richard, I’m not sure if you or anyone else has any advice for me but I thought I’d ask anyway. So I’ve had 7 lessons / 10.5 hours, and I’ve been doing the same 3 junction loop every week, just the same 3 right junctions, and I feel like I’m progressing really really slowly. Before every loop, he asks me whether I want to be promoted or independent, and I can’t move on to different junctions until I’m fully independent on junctions. I feel as though it’s more important to do more of a variety of junctions at this point prompted rather than trying to be fully independent because I feel like fully independent driving is more important at the mock test stage whereas at the moment I’m trying to learn how to control a car and the rules of the road etc etc. I’m not sure if I’m trying to rush too much but I do feel like I’m at the point where I could be moving on at least to left junctions. I’m not stalling at junctions, or rolling back, my main mistakes seem to be hesitation as sometimes I stop when I should go, and sometimes I stop at a give way line then go into first gear instead of going into first gear when I get there, and just generally being slow pulling out of junctions. Once because I was focusing on not stopping and going into first gear I forgot to signal, which I know is bad but I feel like it’s an easy fix and not a reason for me to keep going around and around. And after every two or so junctions, my instructor pulls me over and asks me what I did wrong (e.g not signalling) what I should have done differently (signal), why that was a dangerous thing to do (you need to let people know where you’re going) etc etc. But I just feel like there’s so much talking and I’m barely getting to do much practise. Obviously I know that I should signal, and that I should make one last look when I’m turning to make sure the left is still clear, but I feel like the mistakes I’m making aren’t serious enough to keep being pulled over? I’m not stalling or rolling back or going over the give way line before I know it’s safe. I don’t know if I’m just being hasty and if I am just a slower learner but I feel as though I’m just not progressing at all, and I feel like I have quite a lot of knowledge about how to control the cat because I’ve been watching your videos for over a year, but I’m just not getting to practise when I have to do two junctions then stop, and chat for five minutes or so, two junctions then stop and chat, etc, improve a bit but then have to end the lesson. As you said in a few of your videos, I have the knowledge I just don’t have the skill yet, and I just feel like I need to practise it again and again instead of stopping all the time to discuss what I did, why I did it, what I should do next time, why it was dangerous, etc etc etc every time I make any mistake. I don’t know if you have any thoughts? As I said maybe I am just trying to go faster than I can handle but I do feel like I should at least be doing different types of basic junctions and not the same ones over and over again and doing lefts and rights and not just rights. Thank you for any thoughts you might have :)

There can be imperceptible dangers. There was a crossroad junction down south (now redesigned) that was literally surrounded by open fields that had a stop sign because the angle of one of the roads put cyclists behind drivers' A-pillars and people were getting killed. Forcing people to stop gives time for those cyclists (for example) to emerge from the blind spot and not be hit.

Yes! If you go for a 20min drive through town, I can guarantee you'll see at least a few drivers making rushed decisions to emerge to either beat the first oncoming vehicle they see or to use an inappropriate vehicle as a shield when it doesn't actually buy them enough time to emerge. The telltale sign of it is when someone doesn't slow down nearly enough and dives across the oncoming lane of a new road to turn before someone else gets in their way.

Passed with only 2 minors because of these videos. If your test is tomorrow STOP WATCHING. You’ll be fine.

You cannot have utter control over a system. All that needs to be taught in practical terms is everything you would need to know if there wasn't a Government. Feeling the dimensions of your car, the width of the road, predicting and slowing for pedestrians, taking care not to hit other cars, knowing where they're going and if you can fit. All the "safety" and "regulatory" stuff is not going to come in handy in the future when the authority isn't there. There's no such thing as safety in life, and Freedom is Risk. We judge our own moment-to-moment risks individually for ourselves when we each self-govern, it's not something we should ever be deferring to a daddy or nanny. The driving 'system' is not something we want to preserve over an individual's ability to look after themselves without violating the property of those around them.

Yes but you have to pass the "test" first.

And the exact thing they're testing on a driving test is if someone is able to look after themself on the road with other people. Not sure what you're getting at

Just curious, how many actual driving lessons are you doing per week? I would imagine KZbin takes a fair bit of your time and guessing it makes up your income of not doing driving lessons in place of creating content.
