The reasoning I've heard for Reverse around the corner, is that it's meant to simulate reversing into a parking bay, except you're not potentially putting other cars that may be parked at risk. Great content though, love your attitude!
@dorothrrystyles940312 күн бұрын
They would just take you to a car park and direct you to an empty area for the reverse bay park. Reverse round a corner is taught so that if you have gone the wrong way and the road is too narrow to do a 3-point turn, you will know another safe method of turning your car around
@Pingstery12 күн бұрын
@dorothrrystyles9403 Ireland doesn't do parking maneuvers, just hill start, turnabout and reverse around the corner. So it's as close as it gets anyway.
@dorothrrystyles940312 күн бұрын
@@Pingstery yes true,, and while it’s def a good way to somewhat simulate reverse bay park, it’s not the actual reasoning for it being on the test. It’s just to learn another way to turn the car around. That’s why I responded haha
@Pingstery12 күн бұрын
@@dorothrrystyles9403 fair enough! It's still a weird maneuver, as no one I've brought it up with has ever had to do it in real applications, that's why this seemed like the most logical explanation! I guess this maneuver might make more sense in the country side with narrow lanes.
@kevmur100011 күн бұрын
Additionally, on country roads it can happen that you need to reverse out of a narrow lane way to let someone out who's coming in the opposite direction. That's not going to happen in Dublin of course but the test should cover your ability to drive anywhere in the country.

Good video. I passed my test in Ireland earlier this year on the second attempt. Failed the first time for coasting when cornering. Sounds like I would have passed if I'd been doing it in the uk. One difference between the video and a real test is that during the actual test there would be no chatting and the tester would not inform you of mistakes as you go along. But I understand that you formatted the video that way because it had to be watchable.

2:35 Fun fact about Irish traffic lights, yes they do go from red to green without the amber being illuminated. This contravenes Road Traffic legislation, were it clearly says the sequence in which the lights should be illuminated and currently no traffic lights in the Republic of Ireland comform to the Road Traffic Act making every single traffic light in Ireland illegal. Very common in Ireland, making laws that nobody follows or that are not enforced, with the exception of tax laws that are always enforced.

First thing that your man mentions is about reversing around a corner and when do you ever need this! I couldn't stop laughing as since I've learnt how to drive recently this is the one thing that I've questioned. We never would need to know how to do this. In fact the English driving test has parallel parking which makes far more sense! Also to mention Ireland and Australia have two of the hardest driving tests in the world statistically.
@gerrybailey447Күн бұрын
Doesn't make any difference anymore as a large number of drivers have never passed an Irish driving test. There are drivers from all over the world with little or no driving skills and they are driving on whatever licence they can get their hands on. Recently came across an Asian driver driving on a Romanian license, it's a free for all out there. I got a C1 licence about 20 years ago and the test was over 1 and a half hours long but what we were taught was defensive driving, I have carried that over to driving my car and it kinda works like the way you think when riding a bike, and that's everyone out on the road is out to kill you so 100% concentration and anticipation of others on the road making the most stupid manoeuvres and mistakes, it's kept me out of trouble and I have avoided many accidents by using a kind of spider sense, if you think someone is about to do something stupid, well hang back and then when they f up you're well clear of aftermath.

14:18 That type of 3-point turn is highly situational though, I have done that exact manouver many, many times since it's one of the most convenient ways to turn around where I currently live. Either that or I have to go half a kilometer up the road (either of the roads to be clear) to be able to do another turnaround instead so I wouldn't call it a useless manouver to practice.

Don't feel bad about the bus, they are tricky to navigate around, I failed my first test because I "failed to anticipate a bus would pull out" when his indicator was indicating opposite to the road and was inside a dedicated bus stop. Not sure if it's still a thing but some insurance companies allow you to take an additional "test" and if you're deemed safe you can save 20% on the policy. Regards to driving in the UK, you guys are absolute nuts, the amount of speeding / tailgating verges on American levels. Not as bad as urban Canadian drivers mind you.

At 1:18 and 21:59, there is no Stop sign accompanying the road markings. I'm not familiar with the Rules of the Road in the Republic of Ireland, but in the UK (both Great Britain and Northern Ireland), I think Stop road markings without an accompanying Stop sign are *not* legally enforceable. You'd probably still fail a driving test, though (I'll leave it to Francis to answer that one). Also, I believe that the driving test in the Republic of Ireland still requires you to know your hand signals to indicate your direction or braking. How many drivers have _ever_ needed to use hand signals? Ross should have tested Francis on those; that would have been interesting to watch! 😄

I actually disagree with the reverse around the corner criticism, despite, like everyone, having had a nervous breakdown about it when I was learning. It is a manouver I use regularly. Reversing into a parking space in a carpark, reversing into a driveway to make a turn on a narrow road. Remember that if your house has a driveway, you are supposed to only ever drive forward out onto the road, therefore (unless you live in a mansion) you're probably going to be reversing in. All the skills you have to learn about observation and control for the reversing around a corner are very useful and important. If you take being a good driver seriously. Which I guess all the people who nose in to parking spaces and reverse out of their driveways don't.....🙄
