I passed my test in Finglas years ago. I was so excited after I passed, I nearly crashed the car on the way home. True story. And a brilliant driving instructor gave me about eight lessons before the test. And honestly? Touch wood, I think I’m a decent driver, but I’ve picked up so many bad habits over the years, I’d say I’d have zero chance of passing now unless I did some sort of refresher course.
@Pingstery
@Pingstery 15 күн бұрын
The reasoning I've heard for Reverse around the corner, is that it's meant to simulate reversing into a parking bay, except you're not potentially putting other cars that may be parked at risk. Great content though, love your attitude!
@dorothrrystyles9403
@dorothrrystyles9403 12 күн бұрын
They would just take you to a car park and direct you to an empty area for the reverse bay park. Reverse round a corner is taught so that if you have gone the wrong way and the road is too narrow to do a 3-point turn, you will know another safe method of turning your car around
@Pingstery
@Pingstery 12 күн бұрын
@dorothrrystyles9403 Ireland doesn't do parking maneuvers, just hill start, turnabout and reverse around the corner. So it's as close as it gets anyway.
@dorothrrystyles9403
@dorothrrystyles9403 12 күн бұрын
@@Pingstery yes true,, and while it’s def a good way to somewhat simulate reverse bay park, it’s not the actual reasoning for it being on the test. It’s just to learn another way to turn the car around. That’s why I responded haha
@Pingstery
@Pingstery 12 күн бұрын
@@dorothrrystyles9403 fair enough! It's still a weird maneuver, as no one I've brought it up with has ever had to do it in real applications, that's why this seemed like the most logical explanation! I guess this maneuver might make more sense in the country side with narrow lanes.
@kevmur1000
@kevmur1000 11 күн бұрын
Additionally, on country roads it can happen that you need to reverse out of a narrow lane way to let someone out who's coming in the opposite direction. That's not going to happen in Dublin of course but the test should cover your ability to drive anywhere in the country.

I'm in the north, in Belfast, our test is like a hybrid between the 2. It's like the UK grading system 16 minors and a serious/dangerous being a fail. But the test is more like the Irish. Turn around the corner, three point turn etc being the maneuvers. I would also say in the North we would also have failed with the incident with the bus here too.

Good video. I passed my test in Ireland earlier this year on the second attempt. Failed the first time for coasting when cornering. Sounds like I would have passed if I'd been doing it in the uk. One difference between the video and a real test is that during the actual test there would be no chatting and the tester would not inform you of mistakes as you go along. But I understand that you formatted the video that way because it had to be watchable.

2:35 Fun fact about Irish traffic lights, yes they do go from red to green without the amber being illuminated. This contravenes Road Traffic legislation, were it clearly says the sequence in which the lights should be illuminated and currently no traffic lights in the Republic of Ireland comform to the Road Traffic Act making every single traffic light in Ireland illegal. Very common in Ireland, making laws that nobody follows or that are not enforced, with the exception of tax laws that are always enforced.

First thing that your man mentions is about reversing around a corner and when do you ever need this! I couldn't stop laughing as since I've learnt how to drive recently this is the one thing that I've questioned. We never would need to know how to do this. In fact the English driving test has parallel parking which makes far more sense! Also to mention Ireland and Australia have two of the hardest driving tests in the world statistically.

Doesn't make any difference anymore as a large number of drivers have never passed an Irish driving test. There are drivers from all over the world with little or no driving skills and they are driving on whatever licence they can get their hands on. Recently came across an Asian driver driving on a Romanian license, it's a free for all out there. I got a C1 licence about 20 years ago and the test was over 1 and a half hours long but what we were taught was defensive driving, I have carried that over to driving my car and it kinda works like the way you think when riding a bike, and that's everyone out on the road is out to kill you so 100% concentration and anticipation of others on the road making the most stupid manoeuvres and mistakes, it's kept me out of trouble and I have avoided many accidents by using a kind of spider sense, if you think someone is about to do something stupid, well hang back and then when they f up you're well clear of aftermath.

Fecking coasting he failed me for and I know I wasn’t but I did have a habit of hovering my foot over the clutch which I stopped after that test. I tried pleading my case but he probably needed his quota of fails that week. Second time was a disaster, I knew I’d failed within five minutes, had to borrow a car to do the test and didn’t have a chance to practice on that car, had never driven that brand before which was a stupid thing to do for your test. 14:18 That type of 3-point turn is highly situational though, I have done that exact manouver many, many times since it's one of the most convenient ways to turn around where I currently live. Either that or I have to go half a kilometer up the road (either of the roads to be clear) to be able to do another turnaround instead so I wouldn't call it a useless manouver to practice.

Don't feel bad about the bus, they are tricky to navigate around, I failed my first test because I "failed to anticipate a bus would pull out" when his indicator was indicating opposite to the road and was inside a dedicated bus stop. Not sure if it's still a thing but some insurance companies allow you to take an additional "test" and if you're deemed safe you can save 20% on the policy. Regards to driving in the UK, you guys are absolute nuts, the amount of speeding / tailgating verges on American levels. Not as bad as urban Canadian drivers mind you.

At 1:18 and 21:59, there is no Stop sign accompanying the road markings. I'm not familiar with the Rules of the Road in the Republic of Ireland, but in the UK (both Great Britain and Northern Ireland), I think Stop road markings without an accompanying Stop sign are *not* legally enforceable. You'd probably still fail a driving test, though (I'll leave it to Francis to answer that one). Also, I believe that the driving test in the Republic of Ireland still requires you to know your hand signals to indicate your direction or braking. How many drivers have _ever_ needed to use hand signals? Ross should have tested Francis on those; that would have been interesting to watch! 😄

Its funny seeing you get marked down for not having 2 hands on the wheel, ive done all my tests in ireland (County Donegal) and while i remember getting told to do both hands for the car, i was allowed to go 1 hand and palm the wheel for both HGV and the Bus 🤔

I passed my test years ago. When I was reversing around the corner I had traffice coming from everywhere so had to keep stopping, got round the corner and stopped, the tester looked around for traffic coming, then looked at me and said "I didn't say stop", I said, well I can keep going but I'll just crash into the car that parked behind me a few minutes ago...🤣🤣🤣 I kept an eye on the testers sheet as we went round (back when it was a paper test sheet), got back to the test center and parked across two spaces. Walked in to the test center and the tester said the only thing is your car is straddling two parking spaces. I said, yeah, but sure I saw the sheet when we pulled in and I knew I'd passed so I did that to give you something to fault me on for the statistics...🤣🤣🤣

The Finglas centre is the worst in the country. They are real harsh on applicants.

I actually disagree with the reverse around the corner criticism, despite, like everyone, having had a nervous breakdown about it when I was learning. It is a manouver I use regularly. Reversing into a parking space in a carpark, reversing into a driveway to make a turn on a narrow road. Remember that if your house has a driveway, you are supposed to only ever drive forward out onto the road, therefore (unless you live in a mansion) you're probably going to be reversing in. All the skills you have to learn about observation and control for the reversing around a corner are very useful and important. If you take being a good driver seriously. Which I guess all the people who nose in to parking spaces and reverse out of their driveways don't.....🙄

If only Ross was a driving tester, there would be fewer licensed drivers on Irish roads. Since the 2020/2021 lockdowns driving standards have deteriorated in Ireland. And it doesn’t help with some road users flipping between being pedestrians and back… and the number of motorists running red lights is shocking.

Failed my test 5 times in rhaheny which used to have the lowest pass rate in ireland eventually they fired theg testers brought new people In. I drove worse because I was in a new instructors car and the c8ar was dodgy but with The newtestersi passed. Was bitter sweet because I felt I should. Have passed years ago. If this guy knew about not overtaking with oncoming .traffic he would have passed also nobody talks this much on an actual test😊

Where you got a fault for waving for thanks. If you just lifted your fingers and palm still on the wheel would that be a fault or not in Ireland. The way some people go on about 2 hands on the wheel you would think the car is going to do a u turn in the road. We both know a car goes straight with no hands .

Right?? The whole hands thing drove me nuts lol. It's just not real life driving. Would not recommend driving with no hands but we all know you're right

The test is the easy bit. The being fucking shafted for owning an looking after a car is the hard bit, especially an old one. Ironic for a government that's trying to be green and eco friendly. The easiest and cheapest period of driving is the bit when you're learning
