@@conrad1468 hello i have the same engine and i have a question about cold start mechanism of the pump, when you have it on can you hear the diference in the engine running? becouse i cant understund if it works or not, thanks
@conrad1468 Жыл бұрын
@@sk8foreal it’s a very small difference. They only time I hear a difference is on cold start. I pull the choke knob out and start. Once it’s started I push the choke in and I can hear the RPMs drop just a little. That’s the only time I’ve ever heard a different sound with the choke out. It drives the same with it out or in.

Best timing description I've found! Just got an 85 diesel Golf for $600 that needs a new head gasket so figure I may as well reseal the whole engine.

Thank you Sir!! Are you pulling the engine or replacing seals with the engine in?
@dropCvoices3 жыл бұрын
@@conrad1468 I'm not entirely sure yet. It seems like maybe worthwhile to just do all the seals if I'm already doing the head gasket? Unless you think I can replace enough seals with the engine still attached to be worthwhile?

@@dropCvoices I’d change the gaskets I could reach while the engine is in. Like cam seal, valve cover gasket, etc….

Is there a reason to remove the vacuum pump or is just for the extra room?
@conrad1468 Жыл бұрын
I would say, yes it will need to be removed. Unless your tool is shorter and it’ll fit in that area. It’s a tight squeeze in between the injection pump and brake booster pump.

A long screw and push on the cap on an angle to twist the cap off.

Hey mate when I rotate the engine counter clockwise to find the point where the gauge stops, the gauge doesn’t seem to move at all until I rotate the engine counter clockwise considerably. Way more than what’s seen in your video. Any idea what the issue might be?
@conrad1468 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! Is the “choke” or pump advance shut off? That did some wacky stuff when I forgot to put the knob down. Is your gauge in the whole way? It should move almost the whole time until it hits the flat on the injection pump lobe.

@@samuelbrennan8382 you’re very welcome! Glad I could help. I would confirm on the back of the pump the lever is actually pushed downwards. I’ve had broken cable and “thought” it was working. Can you possibly tell me where the idle should be set to??
@conrad14682 жыл бұрын
To be honest I never messed with the idle. It’s basically whatever the pump is set at. The repair manual says 800-850rpm at 60C (140f) engine temp. I don’t have a diesel tachometer so it will take a special tool to measure the RPMs.

Is it possible for the timing to get off by it’s self somehow? Or can this only happen when you take the pump off/ apart
@conrad1468 Жыл бұрын
Maybe the mounting nuts getting loose and the pump slides out of time. Worn pump? Worn leaking injectors might throw it off.

can i use the mm for the pumpsetting for a 1.6d JR Turbodiesel engine from an MK2?
@conrad14682 жыл бұрын
I think you can follow the same process to set your timing but refer to the repair manual for the proper timing MM degrees for a turbo diesel. Turbo and non-turbo have different degrees of timing.
