What a brilliant idea for a survival horror game; no literal monsters, just war being hell.
@BloodRedFox20082 жыл бұрын
Funny you say that because earlier demos from like 2 or so years ago did have supernatural elements and monsters, but it looks like the dev dropped those in favor of horror based more on realism (which is not a bad thing at all as frankly WW1 might be one of the best choices for a realistic survival horror setting).

Thinking about it, there's games that try this approach but don't go all the way, or either just don't commit fully to the "war is hell" experience as a horror game, which is probably hard to do without devolving into a straight normal shooting game, but this is definitely unique.

Most FPSs COD, Battlefield. Want to make you feel like a Hard-ass Soldier. Which eventually is just fun shooting in the end. Most don't want to play a Solider that is absolutely terrified. His Colleagues becoming Desperate and slowly going mad from the violence and Death of War. Not to mention Food and Ammo shortages with no to Slowly moving reinforcements that may not make it to your group in time before your all slaughtered by the enemy. So you bide your time and hope for the best. But a lot of folks don't want to feel vulnerable and isolated in a shooter. But it sure as hell would be amazing horror game.

While still mostly a normal shooting game, I always felt that that not not only just the war stories, but also the multiplayer, specifically the operations for Battlefield 1, did a pretty good job of capturing this as far as more mainstream titles go. One memory that sticks out to me was when I had just started a game on one of the more naval-centric maps, and my team has started out on ships, and had to do an amphibious landing on an enemy fortress (I can't remember the name of the map atm). We got in the smaller landing craft and boats and as we were moving towards land I saw a boat driving next to me go up in a large explosion, then a ways off to the right another one did, then my own boat was raked by machine gun fire which killed some of my squad. As we we got closer larger cannon shots and other gunfire would occasionally get close but miss, and as soon as we landed and charged up the wall entire squads were being cut down before even getting to fire a shot, and so my remaining teammates decided to flank around, only to get into a very fast paced and close quarters gunfight with some enemies that found us as we were cut off from the rest of our team. It probably lasted only a minute or so but after killing only a few of the enemies, one by one my teammates died and as I was alone and hiding behind a crate to reload my now empty weapon, an enemy came around my cover and killed me with a shovel. That entire segment of that match probably only occurred within 5-10ish minutes, but it really captured how you can do everything right and just be in the wrong place at the wrong time, The operations in general just have a really interesting feeling to them beyond a lot of more arcade-y shooters. There was something special or more unique about fighting for every last inch of ground with dwindling reinforcements, or fighting a losing battle against attackers reinforced with an airship or dreadnought, etc. and seeing them move against you like an unstoppable wave while you get absolutely steamrolled, and how the gameplay of each player shifts depending on if they are defending and being overrun, and have to now prioritise staying alive to remain useful, or while attacking with limited reinforcements, being increasingly careful as your tickert count dwindles. Sorry for the wall of text, and I know your comment is a year old now, but I just thought I'd chime in because it reminded me of a lot of great memories with BF1.

Horror in war? Maybe for some people. Some people love war. And a lot of people from the winning and losing side never die during war. Some people like Churchill among many others lived for war and some even suffered from depression and became suicidal at the thought of having no conflict to fight for their country for. Dying for ones country was seen as a form of Martyrdom for a long time.
@TheColdsnipa2 жыл бұрын
@@johnbloom1109 And some people like haunted locations. The thing about media such as books, movies, or video games is that the narrative can put any amount of elements under a microscope to make something look comedic, ironic, or scary. Think of the zombie trope, there are comedic zombie movies, scary ones, action ones, and these all depend on what aspects they choose to focus on. Stories like these focus on certain elements to bring out what the author(s) want you to see in it. And in this case it wasn't the glory and triumph, they wanted you to see the horror.

Oh, man... I've watched every video iteration you've released of this game over the years -and it comes as close as a game can get to absolutely NAILING the despair and horror of trench warfare during the Great War -at least as far as the conditions of the allied trenches, as apparently the German trenches were far more strategically and methodically placed and far cleaner, drier, and more traversable as a result. All that aside, I genuinely look forward to the full release of this title. A LOT of love went into this project.

I like it! I'm strongly reminded of the first half of Necrovision, which was a 1st person version of this "trench hell" with similar atmosphere. And that's not a bad thing! Although it got silly in later chapters, the conventional WWI forts & trenches half of Necrovision was incredible and very underrated. It looks like this game manages to pull off a lot of the same atmosphere and design cues. Good stuff! I always found WWI an inherently hellish and eerie war, with the mazelike trenches, infinite no man's land, empty destruction and death for miles in all directions; the horrors of gas and rats and perpetual artillery... I mean all war is hell, but WWI was in a class of it's own: Where modern firearms, machineguns, airplanes, artillery, vehicles, telephones, etc were all brand new technology. Industrial-scale killing by newly mechanized armies still trying to utilize the ancient tactics of centuries past because they didn't know any better; didn't realize how deadly their new weaponry and technology was or that it made all the old ways useless... Nobody knew what they were doing, soldiers just getting slaughtered en masse charging into machineguns, and it bogged down into static trenches, attrition fighting, horrific conditions at the front... It was still to this day the "worst" war ever waged in terms of pure losses, terrible conditions and human misery. Also reading a book of true (or supposedly true) WWI ghost and other weird stories when I was a kid scared the shit out of me, and instilled a fascination with the both subjects...
