Hello! This practice video is a good method for preparation and I wish you could offer more videos of this kind. I would separte the parts of speech more clearly. Sometimes make a break between full sentences, before they came to an end. A good rule of thumb are 2-3 Sentences and then giving hte interpreter time to translate

I can only wish that speakers would stop at each sentence during consecutive. In reality, they talk away for (at least) a couple of minutes at a time and this makes consecutive my nightmare job. Simultaneous is easier and more enjoyable, not least because you don't lose the emotional connection with speaker and audience for a sec - you become part of the flow.

I´m asking out of ignorance here. When you do simultaneous interpretation, do you get in advance a copy of the script (in this case) Leo is reading? Or do you have to inherently know all the titles and words that he is saying? I tried it and he killed me when he mentioned the US Navy admiral with all his titles. What would you do in that case? I´d really appreciate your answer. I kinda like this whole translation/interpretation business.

@@Bestialce2007 Theoretically, you should be provided with the text, but normally they (the organizers) don't bother much. In the usual case, you have to nag until you're finally mailed some materials on the topic and you need to google further stuff to get prepared. Also, you always keep a notebook next to the mic and hastily write down complicated stuff (such as numbers and names). But it is a nice career and I wish you success! Once you've gained enough experience to stay cool no matter what, it is quite easy and enjoyable.

Thank you for the clearly presented and a useful video. I am curious what would you recommend in the following situations: 1. You are interpreting consecutievely at a meeting for a British delegation visiting an agency in Spain (for example). The CEO of that local Spanish agency sometimes speaks unclearly and jumps from one topic to another, which makes it very hard for you to understand what he is trying to say ( although you are native Spanish speaker just like him), as well as making it hard to interpret (convey the meaning) in English to the visiting British delegation. 2. During the meeting, the CEO's assistant (a local Spanish lady) ocassionally makes certain corrections to your interpretations (which you openly acknowledge and agree with and you are aware they are accurate and justified corrections), but she also makes some incorrect or unnecessary corrections too. For example the CEO said "Humane", you interpret it exactly the same way in English (the words are similar), but the CEO Assistant makes a correction looking at you and saying "Humanitarian" (it is likely that she actually wanted to correct what the CEO said, but looked at you, so it looked as if you have made an error). Also, at one point, the CEO assistant starts talking in English to the Head of the British delegation, saying the there must have been some misunderstanding at one point (probably in the best faith, to make sure everyone was on the same page).... This has to do with the credibility of the interpreter, which can sometimes be challenged in many different ways by those that are higher up in the power scale, intentionally or unintentionally, and the ways in which the interpreter could best defend his/her credibility.

Reading your situations I realized that people are expecting a word to word translation and not an interpretation. For a translation that is always written people expect to receive something identical from the source to the target language; and even though there are several exceptions, that is why there are 8 techniques to translate. On the other hand, talking about consecutive interpretation, the interpreter after having listened to the source languge must adapt the conveyed message so it is easily understood in the target language; therefore some words can be changed in order to facilitate the comprehension of the message. Also, as a rule for consecutive interpreters, it is always better to speak in advance with the person you will help to interpret, in order to be sure about the corresponding vocabulary you have to apply to convey the message as accurate as possible.

I tend to think the same way as you but the problem is that sometimes those that have more power and authority than us, the interpreters, they can unfortunately easily abuse their power (on purpose or by ignorance) and discredit us. For example, a CEO may notice an interpreter pausing for a second to find the most appropriate word, or consulting the collocutors for clarification before continuing the interpretation, and the CEO says to his closest assistant smilingly (hopefully in good faith): "Ms. Thomas, would you kindly help our friend here?!"... Damage done... The question is: 1. What can an interpreter do to stop the effects of that damaged (caused by the lack of common modern business ethics or caused by ignorance)?

@@batodaesitiates1295 a professional interpreter has to know his own limits and never accept an assignment for which he is not qualified. Interpreting into an acquired language is a daunting task. You need to have total command of it and show confidence while interpreting but most importantly keep on improving all your languages and never think that you are an expert. Interpreting is a lifetime learning process.

I strongly confirm it's a BRAIN ACHING CAREER in that you haven't even in an inkling thought believed that you could go "PARALYZED" and "DESPERATELY STRUGGLING" so hard to interpret those English M16 speech into your own native language. To be practical, you need to choose to interpret in some specific area of interest and that allows you more room to get used to and memorize phrases, verbs, adj / adv, and million other linking words then convert them into your own language. Regular practice could help but it's never a guarantee that you'll never go silence the next time you go into the soundproof booth / doing consecutive interpreting next to another guest speaker speaking weird English accents >
