Perhaps there could be SciShow episodes dedicated to questions such as... 1. What's beyond the edges of the universe? Just past the borders of the universe, would the four forces still apply - electromagnetism, gravity, etc.? If we left the universe in an imaginary spaceship, could we keep going eternally? 2. Perhaps an episode could count down the oldest "rocks" - the oldest mountains/mountain chains? I know the Appalachians are older than the Rockies, but what's the oldest? Etc. 3. We know the planet is warming, but how does science answer the follow-up questions: (A) Is it anthropogenic - caused by humans? (B) Who are the winners and losers of global warming? Which regions will be harmed and which will benefit? (C) Can current proposals reverse it?
@rydaddy28677 жыл бұрын
#3 would actually be supremely interesting, if they could keep the politics out of it. Whether the planet is warming or not is uninteresting, but the "SO WHAT, THEN?" is very interesting.

The universe has NO EDGE. (Hank made a vlogbrothers video about this called "How Big is the Universe?") I am also interested in the other 2 questions though.
@SomeoneBeginingWithI7 жыл бұрын
RyDaddy probably however hard they tried to keep politics out of it, commenters would be angry and assume everything they said was political just because of the subject matter. Those are still interesting questions though, and I hope SciShow looks at them despite the inevitable backlash.

There is a certain type of person who enriches the lives of everyone around them with their enthusiasm for life and ability to draw people in and make them feel comfortable. That's the impression I get about Brit Garner. It's an attribute to be cherished. There's a scifi trilogy called 'Species Imperative', by Julie Czerneda, whose main character is a salmon researcher in the PNW of the future. Her mention of part of the research she's doing reminded me of it.

What about epigenetics, DNA microstructures, protein coatings around genes (such as histonic and non-histonic), mutations and genetic repair, biological macromolecules in general? Cephalopods are capable of altering their RNA cycles in response to stimuli! Many insects have DNA "logs" (which I believe CRISPR is fundamentally based upon), which use specific gene sequences as a proofreader for what should be there in case of harmful mutation! Humans just excise or ignore most of the mutated portions of our genetic material. I'm ranting. Sorry. I just have so many unanswered questions.
@enricobonomi94717 жыл бұрын
sooo... what was your question?
@dzekapeka7 жыл бұрын
Josiah Klein Your questions are interesting... I'd love to find out more about those. I have a couple of questions myself... Like whethet CRISPR could be used to change the sequence of the harmful oncogene or in the translocation of chromosomes... lot more. We can try to get Scishow to make more of these vids 😊
@clumsyatom54327 жыл бұрын
CRISPR can for sure be used to remove mutations in genes. However for now the main limiting factor is safe and reliable delivery of the desired sequence and the CRISPR system to the correct location in the body. I'm not sure about chromosome translocations though. I think it might depend on the size of the translocated sequence.

do the bacteria that live in symbiosis in our bodies evolve? if so, how could they affect us in the long term?
@sirBrouwer7 жыл бұрын
Bruno Signori well basically there are 3 possibilities. 1 they evolve in to something that is beneficial for both the bacteria and the host body. 2 it doesn't do anything. 3 it wil harm the host and so harm it self. The bacteria inside of you can mostly only live inside of you. If you die they will die as well. But in all most bacteria will only evolve along with you.
@SomeoneBeginingWithI7 жыл бұрын
I can't tell you about humans, but the bacteria which live in symbiosis with ants (yes, insects have symbiotic gut bacteria too) have phylogenetic trees which map almost perfectly onto the phylogenetic trees of the ants they are symbiotic with. They evolve together, in tandem. When the ants speciate, the bacteria speciate with them.

I don't specifically know what her research is looking at but I'd be worried about how epigenetics and environment effects the expression of the genes. It might be more interesting to look at differential expression of genes in the populations to determine which genes are being expressed and changing across the different populations.

So I'm doing a project, right? On the "moon" of Venus known as Neith. I'd like you to make a video on that, it's quite interesting, but I can never find sources on it.... :(
@YCCCm77 жыл бұрын
So far, we can't prove it even exists. It seems like its observations of it maybe existing were made in the late 19th century, but it's unclear if the object was another object at a different distance being observed or categorized incorrectly, or actually a real thing. It's been over a century of hunting for it, and we've yet to find it. Seeing how venus is right next door, chances are the object doesn't exist, or isn't even remotely what the original observer thought it was.

how would a porcupine ever impale a human in the torso?? like I guess if you fell down? like I guess it's sharp but death seems pretty unlikely
@patrickmccurry15637 жыл бұрын
Hills and ditches exist. But she said, "can", not "likely". We humans have the ability to pull them out before they work their way in very far, for the most part. And of course we have friends that can remove them from hard to reach places. Few other animals can do that, so... they are not always warning weapons.
@SomeoneBeginingWithI7 жыл бұрын
African porcupine quills don't work their way in, because they don't have barbs like Kemosabi the prehensile tailed porcupine does. The African porcupine strategy is to ram the quills in hard enough to do significant damage on first impact.
