Meb8Rappa I've been wondering if his reverse bike would be stable on its own... I think it would be... which would make it even stranger that you couldn't ride it, but it could ride fine without you.
@JustThomas19 жыл бұрын
Dave Power #6 i think it would act the same without intervention .
@jaytea26389 жыл бұрын
Dave Power #6 I guess it would be stable too. The thing that makes it unstable is probably not the reverse handle itself but the human that also tries to compensate any leaning. The reason you can not ride it i guess is that you don't get to a big enough velocity for that effect to really kick in. Just try riding your bike hands free from the start, it won't work.
@ghuegel9 жыл бұрын
jaytea_org Well then we have a dangerous experiment to try! Put someone on a reverse bike and push them up to speed while keeping them balanced. When they're going fast enough, let them go and see how quickly they crash.

Wow, Rook has adapted pretty darned well, anyway! As for prosthetics, I had a young turkey that we had to amputate her lower leg. We had a prosthetic lower leg and foot for her, and she was beginning to adapt to it. Sadly, the cushioning slipped out, it rubbed a hole in her still thin skin there, and she picked up some infection that just went crazy in her. Within about 30 hours, she was gone. She was such a sweetie, and so patient, and it broke my heart, but it does show that it IS possible In some cases. Not a wing, no, but still. 🤷♀️

Oh! He's the "Henry" that Mr. Grey and Mr. Haran keep talking about on Hello Internet, yes?
@zackmorrison4705 жыл бұрын
So Henry mentioned the connection between the bike leaning and it self correcting, but didn't mention/discuss the fact that the tire is rounded which means that as it leans, the bike is moving on a progressively smaller radius (to a point) as it leans, which allows the wheel to rotate slightly faster as well as redirect the mass and momentum of the bike. In fairness, I'm watching this 4 years later and I don't recall for sure, but I think I have seen a program (Mythbusters maybe) that addressed the problem of figuring out why bikes self correct, so I can't take credit for the rounded tire insight (though I also can't properly attribute that insight to whoever realized it). I do distinctly remember that they (whoever) tested bikes with rounded tires vs bikes with squared off solid wheels and the squared off wheeled bikes couldn't self correct as their center of mass leaned past the definite edge of the wheel.

When you say the gyroscopic effect is insignificantly small in bicycles, does that hold true for motorcycles as well? They have heavier wheels that spin faster, so maybe they have a big enough angular momentum to matter? Or no?

Yes, but motorcycles are also heavier, so it gets cancelled...
@PeterJKeogh9 жыл бұрын
MinutePhysics, SciShow, the math and physics for why bikes are stable is all there, what you mean is there is no complete set of dynamic equations. However there is another point of contention, that is the bicycle need not be stable but a good controller (a human or computer) can still stabilize the system. good paper from TU Delft: bicycle.tudelft.nl/stablebicycle/StableBicyclev34Revised.pdf

orayole Basically, the hinge near the handles (used to steer) is built in such a way, that when the bike goes to fall over, if there is enough speed, the hinge moves in such a way that the wheel is pointed forward, and continues to do so, until there isn't enough momentum for it to continue moving forward.
@Kassidar9 жыл бұрын
orayole Very appropriate profile pic for this. Because the tire makes contact with the ground further back than where the pivot points, when the bike leans to one side (say left) then the wheel also turns to the left and because the bike is moving forward and the wheel is not quite pointing in the direction that the bike's forward momentum is pushing it the friction it generates makes the bike lean back in the other direction. This is why you have to be moving for this righting effect to work

Henry hinted, hemmed, and hawed more about frame geometry without ever using the terms "rake" and "trail" which I would expect anyone who'd studied the problem to have at hand. These are terms with specific meanings that have long been key to anyone involved in the design of motorcycles and, I would assume, bicycles as well. While we might not understand it perfectly, it's not a completely miraculous mystery that he makes it sound, either. I found it to be kind of a strange discussion, actually. He was like--"It's not that; well, it's partially that, but that's not it. WE DON'T KNOW!"
@AlthenaLuna9 жыл бұрын
juststeveschannel Presuming Henry's familiar with the bike-specific terminology, he would then have to define all of it as he brought it up, since the audience isn't guaranteed to understand any of it. Whether or not it's part of his vocabulary, it may have been easier/for the sake of time to forego bike lingo? *shrug* Just a thought.

@JustThomas19 жыл бұрын
Here's the thing. You said a "jackdaw is a crow." Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that. As someone who is a scientist who studies crows, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls jackdaws crows. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing. If you're saying "crow family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Corvidae, which includes things from nutcrackers to blue jays to ravens. So your reasoning for calling a jackdaw a crow is because random people "call the black ones crows?" Let's get grackles and blackbirds in there, then, too. Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A jackdaw is a jackdaw and a member of the crow family. But that's not what you said. You said a jackdaw is a crow, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the crow family crows, which means you'd call blue jays, ravens, and other birds crows, too. Which you said you don't. It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know? I'm sorry , i couldnt help myself ...
