Reculver Towers - the remains of a medieval church on the site of a 2nd-century Roman fort - holds an imposing position on the shore of Herne Bay, on the North Kent coast. Its location means the site is especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change including harsh weather conditions and coastal erosion. Learn about the conservation works that have been taking place at Reculver to protect it for the future. Hear from the team of experts who have been working on the site including stone-masons, carpenters and lead-work specialists and learn about some of the techniques they have used and challenges they have faced during the process.

I am impressed with the craftmanship that went into the original building and the materials used not only by the church builders, but also that of the Romans that built the original fort. It is incredible that centuries later the items that they created and built are still there in the church after surviving the forces of nature and time that seek to erode them into the annals of history. Please pass on my gratitude and praise to the entire team working on saving this beautiful piece of history.

I grew up nearby and visited Reculver about ten years ago and someone had built a fire inside by the towers, blackening the stones slightly, and there was just trash everywhere. No one nearby was particularly interested so it's really nice to see that it is now getting the care and attention that it deserves.

Well done EH. I grew up on “Planet Thanet” and now live thousands of miles away but, whenever I get back there, whether by car or train, I know I’m home when I pass the towers on my left. They’re definitely or my “to do” list the next time I get back home.

Totally agree. They are Kent side of the wansum I think and then your on the planet. I left 40 years ago and can't say I miss it but it's nice to visit and the reculver towers are outstanding.

I’m sitting outside it right now, the stairs to go up inside the towers are blocked by a door with a simple four digit combination lock. I tried 1810 which is the number on the plaque but no luck.

@@darthmarticusLFC Back in the 1980s you could go up one tower and then walk across to the other.

they should put money to better use, rebuild the structure with treated wood. so there is hall for community events instead of an empty building, the towers supposedly used for naval but no doubt is empty the majority of the time.

Love the work but advertising the lead replacement roof gives undesirable potential future theft. The height will not stop the determined.

There's a lot more land around it that would flood first making the Wansum channel wider again and cutting off Thanet once more.
