I'm leaning towards the theory that they consider reason itself as primarily a constraint on one's power. These are people who get into arguments not because they want to persuade someone, but to see someone else fail to persuade them. Seeking to persuade is a confession that you aren't the one who must be persuaded. Its a confession that you want something from them and aren't able to get it without their consent. I’ve seen some people be critical of the fact that Sydney is sort of playing into the preconcieved notions about her by sexualizing herself (eg. some of the promo photos she shot for her stint on SNL were pretty provocative and she seemed okay with them), but I think we have to have a serious conversation about both women being confident in their bodies (maybe her initial feelings of awkwardness that she’s talked about having when she was growing up have morphed into her being more confident in herself) and also the way Hollywood and the film industry are. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but people writing her off because she is attractive and is playing into that does feel wrong to me. She should be able to do that without being sexualized in a creepy way

Part of it is the cheesecake, but also part of it is that they create narratives around Japan that simply aren't true. A great example is that years ago there was an anime called Zombie Land Saga. It was about a group of undead girls who form an idol group. Eventually it got to an episode where it reveals that one of the girls, Lily, is trans. Conservatives lost their shit and began to create this narrative that Lily wasn't trans in Japan and it was purely Western translators who decided to change the character. A Twitter account ran by a guy who claimed to be Japanese was one of the people at the front of this pushing the narrative. But that character could never be created today without them going berserk. She'd be criticized for being too masculine. They'd hate her because she's smarter than any man.
