Marvellous! No loud irritating music, no shouting, just beautifully presented by a serene and passionate artist. Thank you.

What a tantalising glimpse - not merely of Piero's enchanting painting mid restoration, but also Parmigianino's dazzling altarpiece in the background! These are two of my absolute favourite paintings in the National Gallery and I can't wait to see them back on display, looking better than ever. The National Gallery's wonderful conservation department has done much, over many years, to thoroughly refresh our perception of renaissance art. The Raphael exhibition, stunning overall, is a reminder that not every major museum has kept up

What a wonderfully dreamy painting with its sky of fingerprints... and a fine talk by the head of conservation. Thank you Piero di Cosimo and Larry Keith!

That was wonderful. I'm a painter and I rest my hand using my little finger when painting details, often leaving fingerprints. It's almost like Piero has only just lifted his brush.

These videos are absolute gems. I so enjoy every single video from the National Gallery. Would you consider showing us again the painting after the conservation is complete, like you have done with other paintings in the past?

The painting is so charming…and so beautifully painted. I know I’m being fanciful, but it feels like he truly loved and appreciated the subjects of his work. My father a scientist and artist had that feeling for his subjects and particularly loved this period. I so enjoy these videos. Wish he could see them.

Wonderful, so understated, compelling, intriguing. Just, I am sure, what the National Gallery would want from any of its representatives and a Conservator. A masterpiece in in-explication (the canvas cannot be understood or 'read', really), and dear Sir, thank you for your wonderful video. From New York, James

Fascinating! The Conservator has a wonderfully clear and calm style of presentation. I guess a Canadian accent? Forgive me if not! Just thinking that the age of this painting roughly coincides with the children’s mnemonic, “In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue” 😳.

There's something about fingerprints that make us feel close to people long dead. The archaeologist working on the artifacts recovered from the wreck of Henry VIII's ship, the Mary Rose, gave a talk on the objects retrieved. Out of the thousands of objects she said her most thrilling moment was opening a jar of ointment and seeing the fingerprints of the man who had closed that jar over 500 years ago. She felt a closer connection to the person though fingerprints than through anything else she had ever touched. I wonder why this is.

I love the fingerprints! It would be great if we could assemble a collection of artists' fingerprints and use them to authenticate paintings where the attribution is in question. Or DNA in saliva in the case of JMW Turner... or...
Beautiful painting. Wonderful to actually see those fingerprints. Love it!! Thanks so much.

How cool are those fingerprints? I do paint pouring... (I know, probably not gonna end up in your Gallery) but lots of other painters mask off the back of their canvases so it stays nice and clean. I dont... I think it is cool to see my fingerprints on the back of my pieces.
