I flew that route 2 years ago in August. We left Oslo at 9 pm in the summer twilight. and flew north for 3 hours. I knew that it would get gradually lighter, but was still quite unprepared for the emotional impact of landing at half past midnight in broad daylight. Magical.
@EvarRingСағат бұрын
Just a tip that the local trains go often also and take only a few minutes longer to get to the airport than Flytoget for only half the price. Also with the local train ticket you can get public transport within the city to Oslo S included in the price as the ticket is zone-based. Even when i have a company-paid trip, i often take the local train - mainly just whichever comes first.

Steve, this is just fantastic!! In my ignorance I didn't even know where Svalbaard is, so I got the old atlas down off the shelf for a good look. It's hard to believe from the beautiful frozen landscape that you filmed on the flight that there are actually towns and people there. Your videos take us to another world. Stunning - and can't wait for the next one.

Skidoos are great fun and very easy to control as long as you don't try to do too much too soon. You were wise not to be there in the summer because with the midnight sun you would have been filming at all hours and never seen your bed. I got caught out that way on a working trip to Greenland.

My first time to Svalbard was back in 2002 or 2003 for a wedding. We arrived in Longyearbyen the first weekend of March, the sunlight hadn't arrived yet - the mountain tops were colored deep pink for a few hours in the middle of the day. Otherwise it was completely dark. When we arrived in the airport, it was 28c below, and leaving the plane was a shock to the senses - it was like breathing barbed wire. But what a fantastic place. Whenever I mention the best places I've been to - my favorite places on earth - Svalbard will always be in my top 5 list, maybe even in my top 3 list.

Another great video! Thanks 😊 To my knowledge airplane deicing is done to get rid of ice build up on the wings that disrupt the airflow over the wing and therefore changes the characteristics of handling the airplane. It has nothing to do with the fuel however the fuel helps the build up of ice in cold conditions.

I believe de-icing of the wings is done to keep the plane of falling out of the sky, not to save fuel. Ice build-up decreases the lift ability of the wings, but I'm not an aircraft engineer. (09:15)😅

@@steve-marsh I expect pilots to avoid frightening their passengers. :) Pick any crash investigation here on YT involving icing on the wings.
@6yjjk31 минут бұрын
@@steve-marsh onesky is correct that it's to do with aerodynamics; even a thin layer of frost can disrupt the airflow over the wings enough that you won't fly. Or if you fly, you won't fly for very long, which is probably worse. However, you're also correct that fuel can have something to do with it; that fuel will have been sitting at -40 or -50 for the whole time you were flying, and in the right conditions that can be enough to freeze the moisture out of the air and form frost on the wings once you're on the ground.

I remember Joanna Lumley went to Svalbard in her Land of the Northern Lights video and she said it was so cold when she got off the plane that it was like breathing knives, . This trip also reminded me of why on arctic flights I believe it's prudent to have some layers and a even arctic gear. Once on an old B737 Pax-cargo flight from Deadhorse to Anchorage Alaska it was about -80c outside when we had the aft-cabin combustion heater fail and in about 15mins it was down to about -25C in the cabin. I was on my way to Malaysia so I took no coat and was dressed for the tropics and after about 30mins. I was shivering and trying to stave off frostbit. There was only about 20 seats and 8 co-workers who had Parkas so they were managing but not me, so I managed to jimmy the little cargo hatch open and after showing my pilot's license was allowed to set in the cockpit to warm up until landing. The Pilots said they had arctic gear, and gloves they could use in case of a loss of forward cabin heat, and one pilot said he lost heat while flying a Twin Otter on a long cargo flight when it was about -60, and the cold became safety of flight issue because his arctic gear was stowed in the back. Both pilots suggested to always carry some warm clothes and gloves on arctic and long over water flights. On my next flight to SE. Asia from Alaska I took a lightweight parka mitts and a sky mask, and when I reached Bangkok and started stuffing my arctic into a Cab, the cabby said: "YOU NO NEED! THAILAND HOT VERY HOT!" I tried to explain I needed it on may way back to Alaska but likely never having experienced cold he could not understand. On my next flight to SE. Great Trip and epic views! Thanks Steve!. Many moments brought back memories of 15 years in the arctic of Alaska and hundreds of flights, like at 9:00 how quiet, serious And somber people got just before deplaning into dark, bitter cold -40. I know I didn't want to talk or heat anything that would bring to mind the pain of the cold and misery. I once sat next to and Air Crash investigator from the U.K. on a flight to Alaska who asked about working in such conditions and I said I found it sort of traumatic at times, and he explained that he found having to work around and drudging through the remains passengers traumatic but eventually disassociated his awareness and went at it like he was watching a movie and it was not himself doing the job. A few times I adopted that to deal with extreme cold and found it effective. Btw, that ATC Tower was impressive, not only tall but it looks like it might survive a hit from a 747.
