I was in rehab once, and the place was right by the Wisconsin border with Illinois and I caught this show on tv about the Wisconsin dog men. The TV had been fucking with me since the third day when everyone watched Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, while I’m sick and my brain is just cooked mush. So days later seeing the Wisconsin dog man thing was really weird, especially when you can’t sleep. The idea that Wisconsin is right there and they might have werewolf dog men was really messing with my head.

When I was in rehab... they brought us into a room in an old civil war orphanage building, that was what the rehab was, a recently renovated historical property. Place was haunted as all get out, I didnt see anything, but some of my co- journiers did. I just heard them. Walking around, slamming doors etc... so, back to my point. They brought us in a room with a "professional meditative storyteller". In this room there was a little boombox playing native American drum and flute music. I had been there maybe a week if I remember right, kicking opiates and alcohol. Tired through and through. I didnt understand what was happening, being so everlovin tired but when I lay down at night nothing happened, couldnt sleep, but my legs would jerk uncontrollably sometimes, as if hit with electrical current. I'm in the room, super tired, native flute and drum music, pro meditative reader reading us a book like we are a kindergarten class after snack time, when all of a sudden... Bam! I am flying over a town. A beautiful New England town ( could have been the one I was in, I'm not that familiar with it, plus being aerial is disorienting), I could feel the cold winter wind all around me. I look to my sides and see other black birds. I am a Crow or a raven ( dont know the difference). This lasted a good 5 seconds perhaps, and it was absolutely real, I wasnt in the room, couldnt hear the native music, nothing. Then Bam! I'm back in my body, in the room, in the rehab listening to the storyteller read. I tried telling people what happened, with the Hope's they would tell me I had lost my mind, but most people actually listened and believed me. I had realized like a long forgotten memory that I had done it before as a little kid, I had just told myself that they had been dreams. Something to do with my grandparents, red leaves and the old post office in the town I grew up in... anyhow. That walking the line state in early rehab/ recovery, is a vulnerable but sacred space. Matt Pike is a killer guitarist and I feel the same way as he about the moon landing, lol.

I once heard incredibly loud Native American style drum and flute music, accompanied by this huge monster pipe organ that wasn’t even there, thanks to a bag of mushrooms I found in my brother-in-laws freezer when I was 19 or 20 years old. It was one of those “I took the whole thing when you’re only supposed to take half” kind of situations. When they kicked in, I turned on the TV and the damn Simpsons episode where Homer tripped on the insanity peppers was on. Good sign right? 🤷‍♂️ An hour later the TV was talking directly to me. That got too heavy too quick. That was when the music started. It was loud. Really loud. I took a bath to chill out, but kept thinking about Jim Morrison dying in the bathtub. At one point I came to the conclusion that if I wanted to, I think I could turn off my mind and depart this existence in that moment, and convinced myself that was exactly how Jim Morrison died. I kept having all these epiphanies, and thought I better write something down to remind myself later of all this stuff swirling though my head, to think about later on in a clear/clearer mind. Afterwards, I ran into my brother and told him about the fact I was tripping. He said when someone gave my brother-in-law the bag of mushrooms, me gave my brother one mushroom out of the bag and it was pretty strong. I then confessed I ate the whole bag, and his eyes got really big and alarmed. It was over by then anyway. The next day I remembered about the note, and went to find it. There was only one word, “It”. So my profound note to myself at the peak of a heavy trip was, “Think about it”. Doh! 🤦‍♂️

I have similar stories, as we all do ( if we ever lived and had any fun) some of my profound messages stayed with me, but most were like the study of spiders on LSD, just a great big fucked up non sensical web. So. Maybe I try and stay on top of my mental health these days, that's as far as I'll say about that. Last night I'm watching a youtube program, at the end is an add for tripsitter's INC! They are giving people "medically" approved Ketamine ( horse tranquilizers?) As a means of working through PTSD! Holy shit, sign me up! Lol. My wife and I had a good laugh, that sounds fun, but might not be the best decision in creating a positive family environment for my two little awesome kids. Exposing them to Slayer and Primus is one thing, but exposing them to Dad Trippin his face off and melting into the floor would probably be cruel and inappropriate. I'm goofing, a little, I have heard of micro dosing as a new psychiatric treatment. You know? Maybe it works. I enjoyed your awesome post, thank you.
