Because the film was actually based on SARS epidemic from early 2000's. Epidemiologists figured out exactly how it happened, and why, and started alarming the world that it is just a matter of time before the same family of viruses strikes again and probably more evolved this time. Then the film was made with that alarm in mind, a "what if" scenario where the warnings became a reality, and it got all aspects correct. First of all, all virus related things were correct as they had professional help in making a film, then the conspiracy theories, bogus medicines and fake news spread and so on. Because smart people knew well in advance what was going to happen, some 20 years ago. And they warned us. But as is often the fact - no one listens until it is too late. Contagion was just an attempt to put those warnings into a realistic film. Thankfully, current outbreak is not as deadly (that is the only difference), but the warnings about the next being worse are still strong - because we haven't changed the practices that lead to previous ones. We still encroach into the wild territory and come into contact with things we should not. And wild animals, losing their habitat, are forced to live among us. That is why it is not a question of IF but WHEN the next pandemic, worse than this one, will strike. But once again, no one is listening...
