Another fun thing about rogue waves, One of the greatest ships ever built, the RMS Queen Mary (still preserved today in Long Beach CA) was hit by a colossal 92 foot rogue wave on her side whilst carrying over 10’000 troops in WW2. The ship tipped over a ridiculous 52 degrees with soldiers holding onto walls that were now the ceiling, and almost became the worst disaster at sea in history. If the Queen tipped 3 degrees more she would capsize certainly killing essentially everybody on board, but she held and righted herself without causing any deaths. Among other things, it is believed that the expedition encountered gorillas, which the expedition described as "Gorillai", which they believed to be wild men or creatures of some kind. It is said they killed 3 females and brought their skins to Carthage. It's a really interesting story and it might be cool to check out some time.

Okapi were also considered to be cryptids until the early 1900s. They're related to giraffes, which funnily enough were also considered mythical by Europeans for a long time. It's theorised that the "questing beast" from Arthurian legend could be based on a secondhand description of a giraffe.

Very interesting ty ! I didn't know this about okapi but there are other animals that were mysteries for europeans for centuries like rhinos. Old drawings of rhinos are hilarious. Marco Polo used the word unicornis to describe them so, as you can imagine, it added to their controversy/mystery. Hoonestly there are many of our very real animals that look surreal for people who'd never heard of them.
