A very valuable video! There are only a few good picture documents from Romania from this period. The tram was only in good condition for a very short time. At the time of this video, the tram system is only two years old. From 1990 the condition of the streets deteriorated more and more. In 2008 everything was shut down and dismantled. Un videoclip foarte valoros! Există doar câteva documente ilustrative bune din România din această perioadă. Tramvaiul a fost în stare bună doar pentru o perioadă foarte scurtă de timp. La momentul acestui videoclip, sistemul de tramvaie avea doar doi ani. Din 1990 starea străzilor s-a deteriorat din ce în ce mai mult. În 2008, totul a fost închis și demontat.

Born in Constanta, was 19 back then. Clean air, open streets, public beaches, electric public transportaion. Returned there 2 years ago. It changed in a bad way. Dirty air, too hot, private beaches, no parking. To be fair, the whole world went downhill.

Mda,a avut grija boul de.mazare sa decimeze toata reteaua de tramvaie...a pus in schimb niste autocare rasuflate de la turci.poluarea continua in Constanta in anul 2020....

Infrastructura, arhitectura acestui oras si a statiunilor din jur, o jale astazi. Turismul, la fel. A fost acest litoral o vaca de muls pt toti borfasii (cu gulere albe sau mai putin albe...) timp de 30 de ani!... Exista ceva ce nu au pus la pamant?

Great video. Its sad though, because if you think about it, these were still new vehicles, yet they look ancient. Why? Well...nobody had any incentive to actually do their job well. Just "good enough". That mantra of "lasa ca merge si asa" is still alive and well today unfortunately...

Aratau asa ca sa fie ieftine si sa faca multe pentru a acoperi nevoile. Seamana cu modul in care URSS a castigat razboiul cu Germania. Tancurile rusesti eru multe, aratau prost , dar se faceau repede isi faceau treaba, si puteau fi inlocuite repede. Poporul avea nevoie de transport in comun, ceea ce nu prea este nici acum prin vest. Aici era din belsug.

E clar ca nu ai locuit in anii 2000 pe un bulevard cu tramvaie... Crede-ma, odata ce le-au scos, s-a vinedcat la cap tot cartierul de galagie si harmalaie ce faceau de la 4:30 dimineta, pana la 23:00... Cat despre infrastructura, nu stiu ce valoare mai avea aceasta prin 2005-2006 cand lipseau bucati intregi de sina si aia desprinsa care mai era strapungea podelele masinilor, omorand oameni, incendii cu pasageri intoxicati, blocaje in trafic (se strica un tramvai, ramane tot traseul blocat) etc...

@@catacv9 nu știu dacă ai citit dar au fost retrase exact acu un an. am fost în Noiembrie 2021 în Târgu Jiu și în ziua în care am fost la traseu mai era un troleu Rocar, restul erau Solaris... celălalte Rocar-uri erau la depou...

Very impressive video, its not often you find old footage like this. I should point out that the tram and trolleybus network are gone since 2008 and 2010 respectively (sadly). This was because since the election of Radu Mazăre, one of the weirdest mayors that a Romanian city has ever had (to put it nicely), he believed that public transit is outdated and that cars will lead the way to civilization (which is a valid point of view... in Western Europe after WW2 and before the 1970s oil crisis). So yeah, thanks to that Constanța today has shitty Belorussian and Turkish buses. Lots could be said on this theme but i will keep it relevant to the subject of the video, which is the tram and trolleybus network. By the way, what other cities in Romania did you visit in 1986? If you have more videos from there it would be nice to see.

Hi, thank you for your interesting comments and for encouraging me to share more of my old films here. I only visited Constanta on a 1 week package so there are no other clips of Romania. The hotel at Mamaia beach was a little embarrassing when we went to its restaurant because we had a different menu to the Romanian tourists : the luxury of an apple or orange for dessert (which we discreetly gave to our waitress!).

Ah yes, my mum used to be a teenager in the 1980s and told me how she would normally have "rare fruits" for Christmas. Although sometimes she would get them outside of Christmas aswell because her grandfather was a historian who did research in Italy, so you know. Constanța being an important tourist region, of course you could find food products and all sorts of luxuries that were otherwise not accessible to others in that time period to ordinary Romanians.

Hey thanks! I was using a Braun Nizo 6080 Super 8 and I filmed at 25 fps. From 1990 on I used a 8mm / Hi8 camcorder (with subsequent loss of quality...). I'll be posting more clips as soon as I get time.

Interesting video, from what was still a Communist Romania. How easy (or difficult) was it to film on the streets over there back then? Did you have to worry about the authorities seeing you?

I was a little worried but in the end it really wasn't a problem perhaps because Constanta was/is a tourist destination. I was only ever spoken to once by a mechanic at the Sat Vacanta terminus who jokingly asked if I was a spy who was going to fly home with the secrets of the Constanta trams! Alas, the tramway shut down :(

@@transport4616 Ok, it was good that no one bothered you about filming the trams, because now it's historical footage of a lost tramway. This has been the theme in almost all formerly Communist countries; tramways and trolleybus networks closed down due to lack of funding or competition from private minibus operators.
