Constantine in the comics had an even more ingenious gambit, in order to save his life. He sold his soul to several demons before committing suicide. These demons would not cede their rights to the soul to any of the others, so they resurrected him and cured his cancer, for until they could come to an agreement (one which would never come, because they could never get along). Also: John Constantine in the comics is British, and based off of the musician Sting. His name isn't pronounced ConstanTEEN, but ConstanTINE. In the comics, John has mentioned that there's an American who does similar work to him, but he pronounces his name differently (cheeky reference to the movie). Chaz is the only friend of his that never gets killed (it's a running gag, as anyone else he gets close to doesn't have long to live).

Film buffs may recognise actress Michelle Monaghan at the end there (she's the demon who says "Holy water?" when the sprinklers are turned on). Monaghan originally had a much bigger role as a character named "Ellie": a demon half-breed, Constantine's informant as well as his friend with benefits. She was cut out because the filmmakers felt that Constantine's character was not lonely enough if he was sexually active.

He said in an interview in 2017 (With Brazilian writer Raphael Sassaki): _I think the impact of superheroes on popular culture is both tremendously embarrassing and not a little worrying. While these characters were originally perfectly suited to stimulating the imaginations of their twelve or thirteen year-old audience, today’s franchised übermenschen, aimed at a supposedly adult audience, seem to be serving some kind of different function, and fulfilling different needs. Primarily, mass-market superhero movies seem to be abetting an audience who do not wish to relinquish their grip on (a) their relatively reassuring childhoods, or (b)the relatively reassuring 20th century. The continuing popularity of these movies to me suggests some kind of deliberate, self-imposed state of emotional arrest, combined with an numbing condition of cultural stasis that can be witnessed in comics, movies, popular music and, indeed, right across the cultural spectrum. The superheroes themselves - largely written and drawn by creators who have never stood up for their own rights against the companies that employ them, much less the rights of a Jack Kirby or Jerry Siegel or Joe Schuster - would seem to be largely employed as cowardice compensators, perhaps a bit like the handgun on the nightstand. I would also remark that save for a smattering of non-white characters (and non-white creators) these books and these iconic characters are still very much white supremacist dreams of the master race. In fact, I think that a good argument can be made for D.W. Griffith’s Birth of a Nation as the first American superhero movie, and the point of origin for all those capes and masks._

Peter threw a death party and handed me a paper for his party. I was lucky enough to go. I had a blast. I still have the paper Peter handed to me and have the dvd Wade gave me at the Prison. I got a pic with Peter but an old friend of mine stole it from me which is bizarre. I don’t talk to him anymore. At his death party I was able to meet his mother who he looked so much like. Very nice woman too like he is in person. At the time he had his dog Garbo which was a Doberman Pincher dog. She was so kind and loved to explore the prison. Peter is a big fan of Greta Garbo acting and that is why his dog was named Garbo at the time

Tilda Swinton & Peter Stormare were the best thing in this. I actually hated this film when it came out, mainly because the Arrowverse/Legends of Tomorrow version of John Constantine is a more comic accurate version of the character in Hellblazer, so yeah, Keanu is nothing like that version (blonde/english). Being a comic fan & fan of the Hellblazer comic, seriously there was 100 actors better suited to the character & the comic should have been set in London, not LA. This was made during that period prior to the MCU when movies based on comics were being made, by people who did not respect the source material. It's gotten a lot of love in the intervening years & I have fewer problems with it now, so kinda looking forward to a possible sequel. The character has links to the Johanna Constantine currently in the Sandman tv show (too involved to go into here). If you ever find yourself interested in the comic version, definately check it out, otherwise it's covered by comic pop at ... kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6LaiIdsjKtje6c

Around the same time the CW started up the Arrowverse, I want to say Fox iff a TV show of him. In the comics, he’s British. In his show, they got a British actor, perfect smoker’s voice, perfect build, perfect hair color. Show only ran 1 season. So then ABC did a crossover of Supergirl with CW’s Flash show (part of the Arrowverse). And then CW bought the rights to both shows. Supergirl season 2 was for the CW, and she’s in her own universe, but the Flash and certainly technology, let them travel between each other’s world. The Constantine actor from his show appeared as The Green Arrow’s magic expert, and Arrow did another spin-off show, Legends of Tomorrow. Constantine became a regular guest actor on that. If you watch the Netflix show Sandman (you totally should… it’s awesome), when it was written in the late 80s/early 90s, it was set in the DC universe. But it’s about beings who are greater than gods. Sandman is the lord of dreams, and he mentions that most gods start out as dreams, but they get onough people to dream them they can leave the dream realm and interact with mortals. On a few occasions, they come to earth and interact with the Justice league. Especially Constantine and the Martian Manhunter. I want to say Dr. Dee (who is in Arkham Asylum) is a villain of somebody. But Netflix didn’t want to touch characters being used elsewhere. So the kept “somebody needs to do , and just used new (different) characters who do those things. For the John Constantine character, they hired Jenna Coleman to play Johanna Constantine. Which is weird, since a flashback in the comic back the Shakespeare’s time has Dream be attacked by John’s ancestor Johanna Constantine. Also played by Jenna Coleman. It’s unclear if they’re identical great-great-great granddaughter/grandmother. Or maybe the same woman is immortal.

There was a Constantine TV show that was very good. The actor playing the character was Matt Ryan. He played the character more comic book accurate than Keanu did. I am fan of Keanu but Matt plays the character much better. There is animated movie where Kevin Conroy’s Batman gets Constantine, and other magical and Monster lite characters of the Justice League together to fight a magical villain. These characters are Zatanna the magician, Eterigan who is an immortal cursed man named Jason Blood from Arthurian time that is cursed to transform into a demon to fight magical threats, Swamp Thing, and Dead Man who is a ghost, named Austin Brand, that fights to balance Karma by possessing people. This team is called Justice League Dark. There is one Justice League member that is their own Dr Strange lite character named Dr Fate. He would be on the JL Dark team as well. Guillermo Del Toro was supposed to do a live action movie about these characters but WB has creative differences with him and they canceled the movie, made the animated movie instead and took some of the ideas from Del Toro’s script to make the first Suicide Squad movie which was TERRIBLE! I wish we got the JL Dark movie instead.

Tilda Swinton as an androgynous Archangel Gabriel is just perfect casting and Peter Stormare as Lucifer is a close runner up!

@@jenmurrayxoAnother early movie that Tilda also used those androgynous talents of hers is in the fantasy drama - like Orlando (1992). Very good movie. It was the first time I saw her.

A rare gem from keanu's youth! Constantine is a trip thru the supernatural! Great reaction Jen! Wow you were brave enough to watch this movie! More gory than scary but the jump scares did get you! I will be watching this one again! Thanks for watching and sharing this movie Jen ❤️💛👼🏻

There is also the belief that Constantine is a real person because everyone who has played the book version of him and seen or met him in real life. the experience always scares or shocks them so much they sometimes wonder if the role is cursed or something. Not sure if Keanu has seen him but if you ask every other actor who played the role, they will say they met the real Constantine at random locations.

bit of a freaky detail at 3:15 when the demons hand is out the mirror you see the red and black behind it that's hell.

If you liked this movie, you should know the sequel has been approved, and filming will begin soon. It's the same director as well.

I actually forgot how good this film was - great reaction m'lady Jen. Also, Devil's advocate is amazing, no spoiler, but there is a great monologue in that film!

The first of 6 films to be based on DC's Vertigo imprint, released months before Batman Begins and the directorial film debut of Francis Lawrence (Hunger Games, Iam Legend). John Constantine is among the most beloved anti-heroes of the supernatural realm. Originally a British character based on legendary artist, STING. His earlier comic series was called "HELLBLAZER" and the movie's plot is from the 'Dangerous Habits' storyline. Constantine has interacted with other DC characters. But his love/hate relationship with Lucifer Morningstar is just as constant in the bigger scheme of things. Keanu Reeves got the role when originally It would've been Nicolas Cage, who went on to be another supernatural hero, Marvel's Ghost Rider, who Keanu Reeves had actually wanted to play since childhood. British actor Matt Ryan portrayed Constantine (2014-2021) between live-action television and animated films, did pretty well too. Back in 2020, It was announced that Keanu Reeves will return as Constantine and so will director Lawrence.
