Great advice thank you. I learned all of the modes and pentatonic scales linearly and it really blocked me in a way. I can analyze a song and know what scale tp play over a chord but you get stuck in those linear patterns. You're right about just getting tidbits from the internet. There are no shortcuts. You have to practice effectively. That's the only way. Thanks again.

Very important note about the root note. Learn the patterns first, then write your own chord sequence and using inversions, then practice a sequence or melody for that chord sequence.

In addition to 'front' and 'back', there is also a 'center' or 'middle' position: (4)_57 etc (5)357 (6)_5
@modernguitarliberation14 күн бұрын
@@PopovSB Absolutely! I call it the 3 position system! Much more powerful than CAGED because CAGED is really just a 2 position system and it doesn't even recognize the difference between the "Front" and "Middle" forms... I teach the 3 position system in my online guitar academy but I always start with the 2 positions (just like in this video) to help people take it step by step & to help them of course dimistify CAGED.
@PopovSB14 күн бұрын
@@modernguitarliberation The power of CAGED is that it connects chords and scales. Although triads can also be split into "three ways". But it's not for beginners. If you're thinking one chord or tonal center, "3 ways" is more convenient than CAGED. But at the end it's all the same thing - the same notes. .

Fantastic approach, and very informative video. I look forward to seeing more. I disagree, however, that the key to becoming a great guitar player means skipping the freebies and paying for lessons. Not that I recommend against it of course. But some of the greatest guitar players to ever live were self taught like Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Jack White, Wes Montgomery, David Gilmour, Chuck Berry, Mark Knopfler, and countless others. Someone once told me, when it comes to lessons, the teacher benefits more than the student 9 times out of 10.

Shortcut: immediately relate any portion of your studies to a fav song. Change the position and then keys. Rinse and repeat. ASAP play in a band that performs in public. And the band should be able to play all songs in at least two different keys. Sometimes the singer needs to sing in a different key. Write out your bar charts in at least two different keys and understand the harmonic relationships of the chords, i.e., II-VI-V-I or whatever they are. Then you can ultimately play in all twelve keys. Yes, 12.

Here is a cello teacher who is saying pretty much the same thing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIGZZKSogM-gZ6s Much of what he goes into in this video is cello technique stuff and not relevant to guitarists, but he gives this anecdote where a student gives a performance, and it's really excellent until he gets to a section of the piece that is essentially a scale, and the unmusical way he is used to practicing scales asserts itself and makes this portion of his performance sound like a student practicing scales.
