You, Sir, are a GENIUS! What is so wonderful about this song, is that it offers TIME….time to explore between versus…. Explore between WORDS actually. This song and the bpm are an ad-lib guitarist DREAM. When you have such a beautiful melody, chord structure-SIMPLE CHORD STRUCTURE, it allows us guitar players ample time to create beautiful leads, fillers, etc! But Y-O-U my friend are a MASTER of conveying the information. The information that we ALL have in our heads and transferring what is in our head to OUR hand, ultimately, to the fretboard! Thank you-Thank you-Thank you!!

Mr Stitch, great video lesson!!! A great example of this is a video now on KZbin of Bob Dylan’s 30th Anniversary concert, at the very end every guest is on stage playing Knocking on Heaven’s Door with Eric Clapton in the background playing exactly what you’re talking about… it’s fantastic!!! The video isn’t the best but still must watch/listen for all that are interested in your lesson!

Great “training”! (I am the caboose on the improv train.) Interestingly, when Joe Pass was asked for the umpteenth time how to become a better improviser, his answer always was “Learn the tunes!” My favorite “melody” improviser is Amos Garrett, with Jerry Garcia (“Me & Bobby McGee”) on the list, too. A lot of great country players do this, especially on ballads. Actually, one guy really good at it is Willie Nelson! Thanks - great lesson!
@smc81442 жыл бұрын
Best explanation of melodic solo technique I’ve ever heard. Great job. If I can add also, sometimes leaving space (not playing) is just as important as playing. Just like in life we have positive and negative space (my guitar is positive and the space around it is negative) music only exist as sounds and space between the sounds.

I first came across stitch trying to figure out the best way to play Bertha solo, and that was an excellent video. And as you too, is they start showing you more of the channels that you watch... I subscribe to a dozen guitar channels, some do Some things better than others, but with all sincerity, the vibe and demeanor that you give off and the pace is just I want to have you over for a jam session! I'm an intermediate guitarist of 66 years old and what I just arrive from this learning. The melody first probably had more of an impact than two dozen other videos that I've watched. Keep up the good work brother and enjoy your life, thanks very much!

I gotta tell you, I tried your method for coming up with a good solo and it worked like a dream. I e been trying to come up with a solo for Born under a bad sign for months and did the thing where you play the vocal melody and it worked beautifully. The the lines over the 1 and the 4 have a B.B. King vibe and the lines over the resolve sound like a Santana thing. Got in one night. Also good for getting more familiar with the major pentatonic. Thanks for the best lesson ever.

Dear StichMethod Guitar. I just want to say thank you, thank you, thank you. As others have commented below, I feel you are the best guitar teacher I have ever seen. I have been on and off with my guitar for many years because I get frustrated. I am not a natural, none of it comes easy to me and I keep searching for the so called "secret" that thousands of KZbin videos promise. Well, after watching just this one video of yours, I think I'm done searching for the secret. For the first time I understand what a teacher is saying because of how you present the informnation. I am going to pick up my guitar right now and try your method. I can already visualize it working in my mind. I've never been able to do that before. You have truly inspired this 50 something year old music lover. I am going to catch up on many of your videos and find out how I can subscribe to all of your media. Again, thank you and God bless you.

Great lesson! I normally play bass these days, so don't do much soloing, but figured out semi-recently that learning the melody can also lead to much better bass lines, as well. At the same time, it's a very effective and more engaging way to master the fret board than just drilling exercises alone (which is still important). I was garbage at guitar because I was more focused on impressing people by playing impressive sounding shit. While that is good for developing technique, it will get you nowhere at learning how to actually write anything, let alone improvise.

If I'm not mistaken , I believe it was a video I watched quite awhile ago from you and in the lesson, you were talking about knowing where to cut off in your solos and come back in. I can't remember exactly but I believe it was about getting back to your root notes. Anyway, it was an excellent lesson and it really helps teach you to listen for that certain note you needed to get too, to complete the "paragraph "....for better lack of words :). I found that lesson to be very valuable. Anyway, excellent lessons as always!!!!! Thank you so!!!

@jeffro.2 жыл бұрын
I love your train analogy! ( Wife & I are train nuts anyway, but this perfectly describes it, so you can use the melody tune or the rhythm, as you demonstrated ) You came up with such a great metaphor, now I'm going to be thinking that way all the time! The funny thing is, what you describe is what I've been doing my whole life, and maybe why I've been so interested in playing guitar. So many songs I've listened to, maybe a Stones song, or CCR or whatever, and the guitar in my brain will start "ad lib-ing" a lead solo to it! I can't believe doing it on a real guitar is as easy as just jumping onto the other train riff & going back and forth like you showed (didya catch that, I put "riff" instead of "roof" to keep the metaphor going, lol). Now I can't wait to start practicing this with my real guitar! Awesome! You're a genius, dude!

I can say that this really is a secret weapon in my soloing toolkit. Not only does it produce good solos, but you never get lost or are at a loss as to what to play either. I’m in a soft rock band called “the Truckstop Hooligans “ here in Florida and use this idea all of the time because we play all original music and it’s a great way to formulate a solo section because coming up with guitar parts that our unique and interesting to the song isn’t always easy, and using the melody solves a lot of that problem

Excellent breakdown. You really sewed those two aspects together. 😎 They say ‘Rhythm is king,” and it’s true. We’ll all forgive mistakes with notes. But don’t get out of time! However, melody is Queen. Improvisation is melody, and it sure helps to know how to actually play the melody to be able to dance around it. Very good lesson; keep up the good work, and thanks for all your efforts. 👍
