Meghnad explains the widespread use of Hindi and how it affects non-speakers.
Is Hindi our national language? Do we have a national language? The answer to both these questions is absolutely not. In this episode, the first part of the Language combo, Meghnad explains how Hindi turned into a language which is so widespread and used in India.
He also wonders out loud: what happens when a person doesn't understand Hindi or English? What all can she not do in a multilingual country like ours?
This is part one of two for Language. In the next episode, we talk about the other widely adapted and used language: English.

We respect KM Munshi in Gujarat so much for writing history novels of Gujarat and being part of Constitution making and he didn't ask to make Gujarati even an official language then. That person wrote in Gujarati. I wonder what the hell were they thinking. Languages matter. However small the number of speakers may be.

Wish to Join you guys. As I am A Gujarati born and Brought up in Bihar which was later converted into Jharkhand. I studied my Bachelors in Karnataka and I worked in cities like Mumbai, Delhi and right now am living at Gujarat. I speak broken for and can fully understand 8 languages and can write in 4 Indian languages. I wish we can keep the diversity of the nation. The forceful conversion into a unified linguistic structure can have immense effect on the cultural identity, heritage, and lives. We have seen the ill effects of unification by language in China (More discussion later). If you have ever read a translation of any literary novel/book/poem(Which is next to impossible)/recipe you can understand there are so many things that can not be translated or transcripted from one language to another. I personally feel and am trying to impart it in my nephew & niece is the importance of ethics and respecting other's feelings(Wish our leaders could have the same).

When the constitution came into existence, it was written in English and then translated to hindi. At the moment nobody saw the need to covert this complex document into regional languages. So it is officially available in only hindi and English. 3 language rule came in 70's during guess.

@Meghnad Just because you speak Marathi you put a discriminatory data saying Maithili is a dialect. While Bhojpuri is a dialect Maithili is a language and is one of 22 Official languages of India listed in Eighth Schedule just as equivalent to yours. Also, as per 2011 census only 1.12% population in India speaks it and Bhojpuri is spoken by 4.18%. So I don't understand how your data @9:30 aggregates to 41%. Just to educate your Marathi mind, Maithili is the sister language of Bengali, Assamese, and Odiya. I don't think I need to write more, your bigoted Marathi mind which seems to be fairly knowledgeable can help you assess if your regional bias is justified.

This is so stupid that we still have such debates (on language) in 21st century ...... language kept on (and will in future) changing and transforming...... what today is an official language was once a street or colloquial language and its is just stupid that nowadays people attach their ego with languages, which infact is just a small part of our communication. And there are more than atleast 200 different languages and dialects in india. Applying this theory, even languages like marathi, tamil, etc shouldn't be official languages in their respective states either, as all states have more than one languages spoken by locals. and if everyone in India starts taking their respective ancient languages as cultural pride, then we would end up communicating like cavemen.

Did you conveniently ignore Dr B R Ambedkar's efforts to make Sanskrit an official language? It was opposed by members like B P Maurya, who later regretted his opposition in a letter dated 14 February, 2001, addressed to the director of NCERT: "Because of my inexperience, I opposed the resolution. Ultimately the idea of the resolution was dropped." you should atleast add an annotation, 'coz for many people Ambedkar's opinion matters and inturn influences their opinion. I personally think it would be a better idea to try and make sanskrit an official language rather than imposing hindi because of the common vocabulary (not all, but many words are common) it shares with almost all the indian languages (i don't know about tamil.) people even say it is the most suitable language for coding etc.. may be it's time the citizens discuss this in view of rapid modernization and the need for an edge for india to surpass the other developed nations. it is a difficult language but i think in 5-6 generations it can be adopted.

You still do understand that broadly Indian languages is divided in to 4 families 1.indo Aryan 2. Dravidian 3.austric 4. Tibeto Burmese . There are obvious differences between these languages. But there are still many similarities especially within the family for eg. most of Indo Aryan use devanagari script. We are also not living in an era of isolation as we are one country not many "riyasats" that used to exist. We need to intermingle culturally as language is a divisive force in Indian context. Roughly I will say 60% speaks speaks those languages which are written in devanagari script and from my own personal experience people in Andhra and Karnataka understand Hindi (at least the semi urban and urban). No one is saying don't protect your native language as I am from hp so I speak fluent kangri, mandyali, kahluri ( see the diversity of languages alone in small state like h.p.), but it will help if we can all use one language to communicate as it becomes difficult for one to live settle in other states.

AKSHIT GUPTA English, as was already in practice due to British rule and easier to learn, I feel choice of common language English in not bad. Over and above that, learning English has provided Indian software and bpo industry an edge as compared to other south Asian countries. It has helped our economy a lot. English as a single language seems a better option although I like hindi , I also right poems and prose in hindi but when it comes to such topics I feel I need to keep my mind open. Also I asked about learning malyalam because similar is the case with people in southern part or north eqstern part of India. They think they will learn when required.

I have no problem with English as link language but don't you think that making it a link language will essentially kill all Indic Languages & Dialects ? Hindi was preferred over other language {at the time of independence} as it is derived from Sanskrit & has many similarities with various regional languages like Marathi, Punjabi, Malyalam, Bengali etc. {Check various common words among them} & was similar to the spoken language - Hindustani or Hindavi. Having a link language similar to the other regional languages of the nation will help preserve it's unique identity {regionally & internationally}.
