What a joke the medical profession has become (and I don't mean Dr. Rahim). Telling a kid to just take laxatives every day instead of trying to figure out what's wrong with her. I love how smart and honest she is about something that could be difficult and embarrassing to talk about for a kid (or an adult). Hoping she gets some relief.

Honestly, that sounds like a malpractice issue. It continues on and the (other) doctor just keeps telling her to take more laxatives instead of stopping to think that something might actually be wrong? That says a lot about the other doctor's idea of healthcare.

If you have poor eyesight and need to wear glasses everyday, would you also think that the medical profession has failed you because they couldn't figure out why you have poor vision and they just gave you prescription glasses instead? There is a workup for constipation and once structural causes have been ruled out, the diagnosis is then chronic idiopathic constipation. The treatment for this can be one of any number of laxatives. And just like you can choose to live with poor vision or wear the glasses, you can choose to live with constipation or take laxatives. The methods behind the diagnostic and treatment algorithm of constipation (as with most any other medical issue) are based on medical research.

Speaking as a psychologist (provisionally registered), the one aspect that is missing here is explaining the connection between anxiety and the autonomic nervous system. She said she's having panic attacks, and after this in her own consult the mother disclosed that she'd had her own severe pain for many years (during the sensitive developmental period for this child) plus breast cancer a year and a half ago and increased pain since then. I would deduce that the family dynamics and health events (through no fault of the family) were significantly contributing to this girl's anxiety, with family stressors and mum's chronic pain making this girl shoulder emotional burdens too big for an 8-year-old (everyone commenting about her maturity, and her attentiveness to her mum during mum's consult). Anxiety stimulates the sympathetic nervous system to get you ready to fight, flight or freeze. It's only when the body/mind is calm that the parasympathetic nervous system can fully activate, which is when digestion can properly get underway. I wouldn't be surprised if her constipation was caused by a combination of the multiple tailbone injuries as well as her ongoing stress and anxiety.

Exactly my thoughts! Because I’ve had similar issues with anxiety/panic attacks and gut health. I just keep getting meds from doctors. I was also thinking (personally hormonal imbalance). Not sure when that would start for a younger girl (maybe puberty?). But I know I have had anxiety my whole life looking back.

One thing I observed is that she holds her arm guardedly as she walks, there is very little swinging there, The left improved after the last correction of her neck, but the right arm still had little to no swing!? That may get better on the next visit.! I agree totally with other commenters, she is a very intelligent young lady, that helps the good Doctor so much!

I wish we could see him! My daughter has had severe constipation since she was out of diapers (9 yrs old now) & we’re still battling her constipation. From suppositories, enemas, miralax, kristalose, laxatives, prune/apple/pineapple juice & butter concoction nurses made, physical extraction many times at the ER, special diets, more water intake, we’ve done it all! Seen pediatrician, ER & urgent care docs, specialist/gastroenterologist. Nothing has worked. We always leave with a list of laxatives to take. Basically given a bandaid when we need a reason why. A solution to this years long ordeal.

Me too! My coccyx is bent, twisted/rotated, and has shattered, and there's bone fragments floating around down there. I've had tailbone pain since I was a little girl, so I'm assuming I broke it when I was too young to remember. I have had constipation issues since I was really young too. Now I'm in my mid 30's I'm having even more issues 😞. I've had 20+ pelvic surgeries, including having most of my rectum removed, bowel perforation, ileostomy, bowel obstruction, stoma reversal, and a bunch more. I'm actually going to see a chiropractor tomorrow to see if they can help with constipation and tailbone pain.... Please, dear God, I hope it works 🙏!!!!!

When I was young I also had a difficult time pooping. My Dr recommended laxatives. They worked awfully until they didn’t work anymore. Your body can become accustomed to them and then nothing will happen. I used to look like I was pregnant, and over lots of time, change of habits, it became more regular. But every now and again I need some milk of magnesium. The laxatives ruined the bio dome of my body.

Magnesium Citrate is key to going to bathroom. I suffered from Constipation for many years to the point of having to get hemorrhoid surgery.. Doctor told me never come here saying you have not gone to the bathroom in a week..Colace , metamusil, eat fiver..A friend of mine told her Dr told her we should all take magnesium that is very necessary for us and we are all depleated of this mineral...I looked up online and many people gave testimony of having a good effect on going to bathroom...I tried it and have been takimg it ever since it is sold in capsules and powder. I take capsules. usually.one but if I feel I need extra I take 2 and sometimes I have to run for the bathroom 😅 but I dont mind...Is better than the alternative...I put it here in case it can help even if one person...Always buy Vitamin suplements that are non gmo.

Dr, have you thought about a cardioneurologic rare illness called dysautonomia? In my case it has also affected the intestines and I used to spend a month without pooping. He too was prescribed suppositories at 3 weeks old. 🙄 I started giving him 5mls of prune juice in pre boiled water in his bottle once a day. Worked wonderfully, no cramps. After weaning started Weetabix cereal for breakfast. Had no problems since. He's now 20 years old. 😘

Poor kid needs a good GI doctor. I would suspect she has Celiac disorder. I have that and basically the cilia in the intestines do not function properly. Often that happens because they are all gunked up by gluten. Celiacs can't properly digest gluten because we lack the ability to produce the correct enzymes. My daughter who is also Celiac eventually had her colon completely quit functioning. No motility at all. She had to have it removed and now is doing much better.

Senna would help a great deal and it’s a natural laxative or prune juice, she should not be taking ex-lax, for one it’s too harsh & a young person should never start off taking it on a regular bases. I’d find a different pediatrician who’s willing to figure out why she’s constipated, could be it’s some type of food.
