This is EXACTLY what I would expect to happen if my husband and I were to rent one of these things to put in clothesline poles! I am cracking up! Your editing is fantastic.

These machines should have a "dead man's lever/switch". When you let go the ignition cuts out. There is no charge for this information.

If you used a stihl auger you wouldn't have that problem, they have something on their side that bumps when the auger loses control, stopping the engine

I recently bought an electric one for my homestead property, tested it out in town first to put in 4 holes for some solar panel mounts. Thing almost dislocated my shoulder. These things should really have a clutch or something so they don't jerk you so much when they jam. Thankfully mine will turn off once you let go the button though so no chance of a run away situation lol. But that jerking around it does when it jams is no joke. I am questioning if I want to use this thing outside of ambulance territory an hour and a half away from the hospital. I am toying with just building a rig of sorts where it can slide up and down a rail and I can control it remotely. This would also give me the option to go deeper as going any more than like 4 feet kind of is impractical when doing it manually.

Many of the newer ones do have clutches in them such that they will disengage when it stalls out.

My dad and I had this happen when we were installing the deck by his pool over 50 years ago. There was an "X" from of steel pipe to allow a 2-man operation. The auger hit a rock or clay or something and joked the poles out of our hands. I started running in a circle to avoid the swirling metal bars. My dad just stepped back and started laughing. We shut the engine off using a bamboo pole (we figured bamboo was safer than something metal! I still smile when I recall this time working with my dad.

How did the throttle stick? Are they just designed to have a throttle that doesn't require constant input? This is why gas pedals and motorcycle throttles recoil into a neutral state automatically without input. Good thinking with the rope, though. I've been trying to decide whether to buy or rent gas powered auger for a fence project and now I'm feeling much more motivated to try it the old fashioned way first. :)
@lindalealphamale3 жыл бұрын
Zup Nick. Indeed it is designed to require constant pressing of the throttle but it stuck, electrically, not physically

@@lindalealphamale He noticed there was an issue with the throttle and kept using it, didn't clear out the hole often enough, and reached for the throttle handle when it was going back into a neutral state which lead to twisting the throttle and giving it more gas. So yes while there was an issue with the throttle it is operator error as well as a maintenance issue, not a manufacturer issue.

Very simple: defective throttle spring. The moment you let go of the throttle, it should return to idle and disengage. This is what happens when you use Harbor Freight cheap crap.

You're pretty close to correct. Actually, when I explained the throttle-stick malfunction to the Home Depot rental lady, she got all put out and said, "Why'd you do that? You're not supposed to throw a rope at it." I replied, "What would've you done, let it run for a few hours on Super Bowl Sunday and piss off all the neighbors?" I actually had to ask for the Manager to get have him comp the rental, since I only got 2 holes dug.
