My guess for the dozers backing down the hill would be it's probably safer. The engine and big plow are up front, I would imagine that makes bulldozers front heavy. That, with the risk of the blade hitting something on the way down, could cause the bulldozer to from flip if going down forward. By reversing all te machines weight in now "in the rear" (rear becomes your front) and if the blade snags, then it'll just grind along rather than flip you. I'm not a dozer driver, but this would be my own best guess as to why they would reverse down a steep hill.

They go backwards to keep more weight in the back (side facing up hill) and helps prevent tipping over or catching the bucket and flipping

Plus you can use the blade to dig in and act as a brake.

They can use the blade as a drag breaking. Also driver can see where they are going as blade forward would block his view.. Cheers.

Lots of reasons easier to see also if it’s dusty going backwards. Maybe that’s the direction he wants to point when he gets where he’s going and can’t or doesn’t want to turn around there easier faster and safer to turn around where it’s flat. Also (probably not the reason here) big expensive parts always wear out pushing forward so going backwards whenever possible extends the life of the machine a little

In our place all heavy trucks modified to have water tank to drip the brakes to keep it from overheating. Especially in hilly roads as most our roads.

At 5:35/11:53, the issue is failing to rig the load above its center of gravity. The center of gravity is higher up on the carbody and boom. Since the rigging was on the cat tracks it was below the center of gravity and therefore unstable leading to this predictable accident.

Trouble is they're that heavy they are really difficult to free up and pull out of the bog hole or swamp lol. With the right equipment you can get them out but without it they won't drive themselves out on their own lol.
