Not only did he get to work with PBB the whole Summer, but he also got work alongside STUD PACK as well when they came up to help out. What a wealth of knowledge & Experience he was able to get over the Summer.

The gravel numbers are from the American Public Works Association (APWA) specifications for gravel. There are #1 to #9 gravels with different sized and ranges of smaller sands and gravels. #57 is a standard size that has a maximum size of 3/4". #67 has a maximum of 1". #57 and #67 are the typical coarse gravel in concrete. #89 is pea gravel. Your concrete truck ticket will tell you how much of each of these material are in each batch. They all have to have s specific amount of each size of sand in gravel. The gravel pit can actually give you a lab test report that shows you what their material is, and that it meets the specification. Any of your gravel/sand products will have this

I know it's obviously not the same but where I live there is a old chapel from the 1200s that is mostly a ruin nowadays but it has a tower with a spiral staircase and it has to be the worst staircase on earth, it's very narrow, it's not the size of the tower so it doesn't go from 'wall to wall' but up a column within the tower and then on the other side there is just the abyss that makes you drop down to the base of the tower if you miss step, the step height is also awful and not uniform and until like 15 years ago there was no handrail. I had to walk up that tower every sunday during summer to ring the bell for the outdoors mass we held. So I can't even begin to express my gratitude for every person that puts time and effort into building decent stairs haha

Think most people develop this kind of memory, especially if wood stairs and not carpeted.. right?🙃

57 stone is a collection of stones that are retained on the #5 and #7 sieve in the sorting process. #5 having a 1” opening and #7 having a 1/2” opening. (Edited sieve sizes based on some corrections to my original research)
@JacobEdmond
@JacobEdmond 5 күн бұрын
So why isn't it just #7 stone? Is there a #5 stone that doesn't pass thru the #7 sieve?
@SwedishDIY
@SwedishDIY 5 күн бұрын
To only keep the #5 and #7 you need to do it that way. Otherwise, you get the really fine particulates in the mix. And I'm guessing here, but I think that they want it to drain down to the pipes. (You get poor drainage if you have fin particulates in the stone) just like normale road gravel.
@JacobEdmond
@JacobEdmond 5 күн бұрын
@@SwedishDIY ok so it's basically a mix of #5 and #7 sized stones?

I call BS dude... convert 4mm to inches MUCH less than 3/4" so there's NO WAY. Typically #57 stone is around 3/4. Where I live #57 and 3/4 washed are pretty much the same. Maybe you meant cm not mm.

Wow Max, you lucked out getting to apprentice with this crew! And it appears they really appreciated you too. Might be hard going back to all that theoretical crap in school after such a fun, interesting, hands-on summer, but stick it out and enjoy college. Then you can come back to construction or whatever you want when you're done. At the beginning of this project the scale of it made it really hard to imagine how you were going to build it. Then it took FOREVER just to get the dang forms up for the pour. But look at you guys now! She's really taking shape and standing tall...literally. 😂 I guess building a home of this scale is a lot like eating an elephant. You just take a bite and start chewing! You all are inspiring.

When talking about stone, the number 57 refers to the size of the sieve used to sort the stone: The stones must be small enough to fit through a 3⁄4 inch opening but not less than 1⁄2 inch, resulting in crushed stones sized 1 to 1.5 inches. The stones are roughly 1 to 1.5 inches in size, with individual stones that are approximately the same size as quarters and nickels

Great videos, I have been watching for over a year. I enjoy the tips and watching the progress on the houses. The HVAC in our house I walked with him through the house to plan it. Each room has a return so the duct is smaller and there is no restricted flow if a bedroom door is shut or something. HVAC guy said he has never done it, but it was a great idea.

I grew up in a granite town. My father was superintendent of a quarry and granite plant. Granite aggregate is sized from rock dust to jetty stones. ‘57s” is gravel that supposedly contains only stones sized 5, 6 and 7, with 7 being the largest. It is a widely used product. Other than sand, the other most widely used product is crusher run, which a combination of gravel and soil. It compacts very well yet also resists erosion. It is often used for a road base or sub base.

For the window rough openings, my drawings show the ‘nominal’ ROs and once I got the window order information I took the time to write the actual ROs on my set of drawings (in red pen) so I wouldn’t have to keep getting out the window information. I had less window types than you all are dealing with, so I bet doing that would save you way more time than it saved me..

The architect made a huge oversight of the stairs! Any staircase that has a turn in it should exclusively turn to the Right as You walk up for the following reasons: Most people are Right handed and leading Right leg So using the inner hand rail with Your Right hand is naturally easier. Your leading leg does more work on the inside of the corner. It's the same coming down. Easier for a Right handed person to go down to the left. But more importantly its home defence! An intruder with a weapon in the Right hand going up the stairs to the Right turn has a major disadvantage due to the angle of the weapon being on the inside of the turn as you look round and up. The home defender from up the stairs xoming down to the left turn with weapon in Right hand on the outside of the corner has the major advantage! You did a very good job overcoming all the challenges on 1 day labour. A lot of thought was needed for that preparation Good job

i thought i heard that the purpose of the code requiring a landing on long stairways is to give you a stopping point if you should take a tumble. so you don't keep falling and falling forever. I believe there are codes requiring tempered glass in windows at the bottom of flights of steps too in case you should fall down the steps and impact the window.
