Construction of the Manchester Ship Canal

This video slide show is a tribute to Mr John Dobson of Canal Side Cottage, Bob's Bridge, Moore who was one of the few remaining navvies at the time he was interviewed in the 1960's, an audio of the interview is incorporated in this video.
The video has been compiled for the purpose of education and historical research.

A great video. Listening to the voices of the workers is brilliant. My Great Grandfather was a labourer on the canal. He moved from Norfolk where he was a platelayer and I presume he did that work on the railways used during the construction of the canal. My grandfather was born in the workmens huts (2 New Huts) in Whitby, Ellesmere Port in 1892. An amazing enginnering acheivement.Thank you for uploading this video.

What an amazing feat of construction this was. Attempting to compete with the likes of Liverpool and Runcorn as an Inland Port. A fine construction of it's time, brought prosperity to Manchester like never before. Now less so, as time marches on. Thumbs up for effort.🙂👍

nice 1 m8, thanks for that. i enjoyed it alot! question though, what was the cement thing in the middle of the canal, thats now calle gnome island. it looks old enough given the age of the canal to be a gun platform possibly ww1. keep up the good work though eh!
