As a person from Sydney Australia that moved here 22yrs ago, I was always blown away at how much lake front land was wasted long the lake shore - it has taken longer than expected, but it’s fantastic to see this project happen for Toronto. Having said that, I do miss the days where going to Cherry beach 20+yrs ago before there were even paved roads there was a pretty magical experience. Coming out of the woods to reveal the view of the cityscape from the east side. A unique perspective. I would always take visitors there. It’s been an experience to see Toronto grow over the last 22yrs. ❤

The only thing that is missing from this video is a key map, showing where this is in relation to the world. Zooming into the Toronto area, and show the highlighted area of construction for reference. I grew up in Mississauga and frequently cycled the waterfront trail as far as I could go. Now, the Bike Across Canada Route Network that I've created does follow the waterfront trail from the Humber River to Quebec - and the Bike Across Canada Route Network continues to Newfoundland.

Do you think the 22 hectares of reclaimed land less than 2km from the downtown of Canada's largest city, that will be connected to said downtown with a new RoW streetcar route, would be better used for single-family detached homes, or perhaps a Walmart surrounded by a parking lot twice it's size?

@WaterfrontToronto Жыл бұрын
It's not possible to avoid potential flooding on the DVP without rebuilding it as it's built in the river's floodplain. However, this project protects 240 hectares of downtown Toronto from flooding on the Don River. You can see an image of the flood plain here: portlandsto.ca/faq/which-exact-areas-will-be-protected-from-flooding-when-this-project-is-complete/

Please finish the ramp onto the Gardner Expressway before tackling all the other projects. Anyone east of the Don has to drive downtown to get on the Gardener Westbound, and if you don't get off at Jarvis going Eastbound, you end up uptown. The rest of the project looks great, we need a run-off area to avoid flooding on the Don Valley, but everything else is unnecessary and should be completed after the ramp.
@WaterfrontToronto
@WaterfrontToronto Жыл бұрын
We understand the daily impact of increased congestion and traffic at certain locations is difficult. This ramp was removed as part of the design for the City of Toronto’s Gardiner East project. Removing them now as part of our Port Lands Flood Protection project reduces cost and risk, and reduces the overall period of construction by two years. The new ramps to the Gardiner will be built by the City of Toronto as part of that ongoing construction to realign and rehabilitate the expressway. You can learn more on the City of Toronto’s website here: www.toronto.ca/services-payments/streets-parking-transportation/road-maintenance/bridges-and-expressways/expressways/gardiner-expressway/gardiner-expressway-rehabilitation-strategy/gardiner-expressway-east-reconfiguration/

Should have removed the Gardiner entirely. It's a massive money sink for the city to maintain, and cuts off so much of our amazing waterfront just so we can pack more cars where we need them the least.
@D33Lux

Don't know why anyone hasn't thought of this, but how about high speed, car transport ships. We have a huge lake there, why not use it like a road way. There should also be a fast ship than goes across to New York State, instead of driving along the QEW. Long bridges like in the Florida Keys, no speed limit highways like the Autobahn in Germany. You could get to the Niagara region in 1/3 the time.

Is this a land reclamation project just like Hong Kong in China?
@KcarlMarXs
@KcarlMarXs Жыл бұрын
Sorta? The Don river mouth was channelized back in the day, and infill made these islands. Secondly, it means big problems for sediment transport. So they're making a new natural (ish) mouth to the river and park space and it also allows for future development on old industrial sites.
@nli569
@nli569 Жыл бұрын
For this particular project, not really. That said, the area they were developing on (the Port Lands) in itself was a land reclamation project from the early 1900s (the Port Lands you see was just a giant lagoon/marsh a 100 years ago). In fact, nearly the entire Toronto waterfront (or technically everything south of Front Street/Esplanade/Fort York) was land created through land reclamation projects in the late 1800s and the first half of the 1900s.

I was wondering what was happening over there ever since Google decided to pull out. I hope it becomes a habitable space for humans too (ie. People can afford to live there and have disposable income). Its great wildlife is there but wildlife doesn't have to pay rent to greedy landlords or compete with real estate "investors" just to have safe, stable housing. Just saying.
@anthonymorris5084
@anthonymorris5084 Жыл бұрын
Why are you slandering landlords as "greedy"? When you go to work are you being greedy? Would you prefer they stop renting to people and providing places to live? Do these people owe you a home or something?

The drug war was lost long ago, it is time to legalize what we can and put more into prevention and rehabilitation to reign in the profits of cartels and gangs. Look what happened to cannabis, it is no longer used here to create massive profits for drug dealers illegal and usually violent activities. Although the police have done a lot of work finding crime, they really are a reactive force, it's not meant to reduce crime before it happens.

Calm down and tell the truth. _There are not_ "21,000 homeless sleeping on sidewalks." That's about a 20x exaggeration. Total homelessness is under 10,000, of whom _~90% are in shelters._ The homicide rate is not much higher than it was 50 years ago (40/year when the pop. was 2.0m; 75/year now the pop. is 2.9m; for 2023 the YTD trend is for low 50s for the full year). The rest of your points are just made up out of thin air. This is what's wrong with social media.
