I am just bamboozled, I can not get the hip and valley sorted, but I will watch it over and over until it clicks. I think your vid was done well, it is just me. Sometimes I have to watch a few times.

DrHavok1 do not use anything this idiot has instructed here .... i am a carpenter and have been for 20 yrs ... i would of cut and fixed that bastard hip in 10 mins ... what was the backing all about on the birds mouth too ?!!! and the geezer in the video clearly thinks he is cool ... he s not .. clearly has no idea about carpentry either ... probably works in a call centre !?

Just curious to know why you just didn't deduct 3/4" from your run when using a single check cut for the top if the valley/hip rafter?

it's great that you show the making a hip /valley but how about laying the hip/valley to accept the jack location

Hallo John, grate video. I am childish too, hehehehehe. I do electric, drywall, framing, painting, plumbing, etc and I'm doing it with fun. Usually I say: If you know how to work, you can't get tired. The roof is the part of construction that I've fixed and that's it. Now, I would like to chelenge myself if I can build one myself. . Soon, I will start some porch covering with the " A " shape roof. Would you mind if I ask for piece of advice ? I may send you some questions on one of your channels if I get some problem cutting rufters and other things. Ca Thanks man for this video.

Great video for people like me just interested in having a go! Thanks for making it :-) Some of the bitter pros on here really are sad. Can I ask though, what's the logic behind the measurements for the double cheek cut at the top? Being a Brit I'm having to do the whole thing in metric, so why do you back off the first plumb line by 1 1/16"? I have an engineering degree but I can't figure it out! Cheers :-)

Ed, I'm not sure if you received your answer yet; but you back off the first plumb line by half the width of the ridge board.
@TheToolnut
@TheToolnut 4 жыл бұрын
It's half the diagonal lenght across the ridge board (at 45 degrees) on a ridge thickness of 1.5 inches.

This drops the hip rafter to plane in with the ridge and king rafter.

Do u shorten the valley rafter as well as the hip?
@achannel8142
@achannel8142 2 жыл бұрын
No. But you may raise the valley by an equal amount as you lowered the hip, but most framers do not do it.
